    Feat Points

While I can see the purpose or rate feat and the point based purchase mechanic , I am not sure I am sold on the additional complexity. I would rather just give out more feats and more bonus feats and keep it at that.

    More feats, and stackable feats

I like the idea of more feats. If the stackable become a problem on Spell DCs you can always scale it back or apply the law of diminishing returns or require that the bonus is not more than 2 higher than the next two highest School Spell DC bonuses the character has or whatever. Give it a try...

    Reducing bonus types

Interesting stuff. I have not really worried about such things as it has not come up that much in my campaigns and it is certainly interesting to see all of the different types of bonus spread out. Though I think I would have rolled "Sacred/Profane" into "Luck" for what is divine favor if not...

    Concentration, Knowledge (arcana), and Spellcraft

I can see wrapping Arcana and Spellcraft into the same skill, as they are magic in theory and magic in practice. But not convinced that Concentration needs to be folded in as well especially if you are making Concentration more generally useful. While I can see a Monk or Rogue having...

    Tell us about your homebrew!

The goal of the Sea of Stars is self consciously very high fantasy. I wanted it to be a setting where I could have infinite variety in infinite combination.

New use for the Heal skill

Yes, Battlefield Healing is designed as an after combat/accident treatment. You can use the standard stabilization rules to keep someone from bleeding to death during combat but it takes a bit longer to get people back together. I chose a DC of 15 so that even low level characters would have...

    Tell us about your homebrew!

My campaign wiki is here: Sea of Stars It has not been updated much lately as the campaign is semi-inactive at the moment.

New use for the Heal skill

These are the rules we use in my campaign: Battlefield Medicine- Takes one minute, on a successful DC 15 heal check heals a base of 1 hit points per HD of the treated character +1 hp for each 3 points the DC is exceeded by. The treatment of a wounded character must be begin within 5 minutes...

Using Heal skill to actually cure wounds without rest.

This is the house rule we are currently using: Battlefield Medicine- Takes one minute, on a successful DC 15 heal check heals 1 points +1 for each 3 points the DC is exceeded by. A treatment of a wound must be begin within 5 minutes of taking it. Only one battlefield medicine check may be made...

    Melnibonean-inspired race as LA+0

I would like to see them with Knowledge (arcana) and Knowledge (the Planes) always as class skills. And maybe a -2 racial penalty to save against effects that cause fatigue or exhaustion to represent their indolent physical lifestyle?

What Knowledge Skill do you use/allow?

For my campaign: Knowledge Skills: add the following: • Astronomy, study of the celestial objects and their relationships. • Dragons, lore and secrets of those most powerful of beings. • Forbidden, secrets man was not meant to know. [Can only be gained with DM’s permission.] • Military...

    Improving the Quarterstaff

While I really like Claudius Gaius' solution, it makes simple weapons used with martial skill equal to martial weapons and cheaper to boot (except for crossbows which it simply makes amazing). There must be a median between the two, but I am not sure where it is.

    Improving the Quarterstaff

Break it into two feats? Offensive Staff Combat, PreReq: Str and Dex 11+, BAB +1 Use staff as a reach weapon, requires a full attack. Cannot be combined with double weapon fighting. When making a full attack, your first attack with the staff treats the weapons as if it was one-size larger for...

    New 'Mechanus' race

Interesting idea, but they need a bit more background. Why were they created and for what purpose? Mechanically, seems within range except for: -A Mechanus receives DR 50/- to all Evocation spells unless they deal electrical/lighting based damage. -A Mechanus normally takes 5x damage from any...

Illumians: LA +0?! And as an elven subrace for my homebrew

I agree with Andre, +1 LA is more than fair for this race. I would also go with his suggested modifiers except I see no reason not to leave Knowledge (arcane) and Spellcraft as class skills for them. If you do go with elven cultural weapons for them, I would limit them to, say, rapier and...

    What spells do you ban?

I ban: Magic Missile Miracle All Planar Travel Magic Heavily modify: Anything that restores the dead to life "Animal Enhancement" spells (Bear's Endurance, et al) Teleport and similar spells Vampiric Touch (you can see that discussion here) And I vet any spell from outside the Core Books...

    Alternate Vampiric Touch

Looks entirely playable, Sylrae. But I would suggest removing the 'undead drain you' clause, Necromancers are suppose to be the masters of undead and magic to deal with undead, I would hope they would built their spells so as not to backfire on them if they were forced into combat with undead...

    Alternate Vampiric Touch

Hey Shieldhaven! Interesting points. Brings up the question of how negative energy annihilating positive energy (which is what "energy drain" must represent) give the being of negative energy temporary "health" (in the form of temporary HP). You are right, probably best not to think about it...

    Alternate Vampiric Touch

It is very interesting to read about how other groups play. It reminds me how different play environments are from group to group. Muddman: Your comments mostly echo what has been said above. The "untyped damage" issue is dealt with to some extent in the revised VVT above. But as to arcane...

Does anyone actually use house rules?

I use house rules in my campaign as well, quite successfully. There are about two pages of them and over half are setting specific changes and the rest are designed to give the players more options.
