What is the essence of D&D

I just wanted to chime in that this 100% mirrored my own experiences, as well. As a 4E customer, I was repeatedly harassed or proselytized to at multiple different gaming stores as well as a Barnes & Noble whenever I tried to purchase a 4E product or, in one instance, even talk about the game...

D&D 4E 4E Fans Would You Play This?

Idea 1 already exists. Play D&D 4E using DMG2's companion character rules: - Only 4 classes (striker, controller, leader, defender) and each class only has a single class feature - No feats - No daily attack powers - No paragon paths or epic destinies - MM3 On A Business Card math for PCs -...

    D&D 4E 4E Redux

Just use companion characters from the DMG2 instead of regular PCs. Way simpler and more streamlined than any 5E PC. If you want a little extra complexity you can give them a theme, paragon path, and/or epic destiny as they gain experience (which companion characters don't get by default).

D&D 4E 4e Compared to Trad D&D; What You Lose, What You Gain

I know I'm a little late to the party here, but I wanted to speak on this... I think a lot of people generalize DW to the entire PbtA school of games way, way too much. There are other PbtA games, designed by Vincent Baker even, where the MC rolls dice for NPC declarations (see Freebooting...

What are your favorite Skill Challenges.

Absolutely yes to all this. As much as we've enjoyed the combat stuff, skill challenges are by far my favorite part of 4E. Their absence in 5E is a major part why I never much bothered with that system. In my opinion, Complexity 5 challenges are best reserved for multi-stage challenges like the...

What are your favorite Skill Challenges.

The DMG2, by a wide, wide, wide margin.

    Mearls On D&D's Design Premises/Goals

Just to be clear, there are non-arbitrary, "in-fiction" reasons for the limits to 4E's encounter and daily powers. They are described quite clearly in both "Wizards Presents: Races & Classes" and "Martial Power 2", although it could certainly be argued they didn't go far enough in communicating...

A discussion of metagame concepts in game design

Yes, that's similar to how it works in 13th Age as well. The fighter has a variety of maneuvers (I believe you start off with 4) and each one can have a different type of trigger. Generally speaking, defensive measures like Second Wind tend to trigger on misses and powerful offensive abilities...

    Morale systems

My problem with that is it makes Intimidate too much of a must have skill. What other skill could subdue an enemy with several hundred hit points remaining with a single roll? The high DC is clearly intended to make that use of the skill relatively rare and/or only really useful against enemies...

A discussion of metagame concepts in game design

This is similar to how Fighter maneuvers work in 13th Age. Basically, each maneuver has a specific die trigger such as "any even roll", "on a natural 16+", "on an odd miss", and so on. Assuming a 4 round battle on average and assuming you want your fighter to use these abilities around once...

A discussion of metagame concepts in game design

The fictional basis for martial powers are described on page 106 of 4E's Martial Power 2 and also touched upon in Wizards Presents: Races & Classes in the chapter on fighters. From the text, we can infer that martial heroes aren't "magical" but they also clearly aren't "mundane" either.

    Mundane/Simple Fighter Pre-build

On the note of simpler options, has anyone experimented with the "No Damage" hits system in Dragon 423?
  15. heretic888

    Morale systems

I would add though, that since this "damage mitigation capacity" doesn't affect anything else about your character -- not your attacks, your defenses, etc --- that I see them more along the lines of "plot points" or "protagonist points" or whatever. Its clearly independent of a character's...

    Morale systems

    Great, didn't now that. :)
  17. heretic888

    Morale systems

Yep. If pushed into a corner, I would describe hit points as one's capacity to turn a serious blow into a glancing blow or a near miss. This "capacity", however we define it, still has no clear relationship to a character's physical or psychological state as evidenced by the fact that it only...
  18. heretic888

    Morale systems

Well, like I said, hit points don't really represent *anything* about the characters other than an abstract doom clock. We can describe it as a "willingness to fight" or an "ability to fight" all we want, but at the end of the day its just Color; by which I mean, it has zero impact on the game's...
  19. heretic888

    Morale systems

I'm of a somewhat different mind here. To me, having hit points directly simulate morale has the same problem as having hit points directly simulate meat or health or whatever. It basically has no bearing in the game's procedures whatsoever except as Color. Whether meat or morale, being low on...

A discussion of metagame concepts in game design

That would be a compelling argument if every bone in the human body were as strong as the femur. They're not. A giant's ankles would snap as soon as they stood up. Look, this is a pointless diversion. If you're not going to both to read the articles I provided with actual physicists and...
