    PHB2 sold out!

What about the above statement contradicts the idea that it moved faster than they expected. "We don't know how fast PHB2 will move." "Let's guess X and print X." "OK." "We ran out of books. I guess PHB2 is performing better than X." Are you just arguing for the sake of arguing?

    PHB2 sold out!

The fact that the book sold out of its first print run in less than a month would seem to indicate that it sold better than management was expecting. Frame the question in any way you want, but it's not going to convince me that attaching the word "failure" to a book that made #14 on the...

    PHB2 sold out!

I'm still not getting how being on the best seller list and then dropping off means that it's doing poorly. I'm not arguing that PHB2 is some runaway multi-million dollar smash-hit. I just don't see how anyone can describe a book that was on a bestseller list (for any length of time) as being a...

    Wait a minute...

They didn't sell out of the .pdf version, which is what was being pirated.

    PHB2 sold out!

I have yet to see any reliable information from any source that indicates the PHBII was anything less than a success. If you've got better information than I do, please share. I don't really pay attention to what WotC is saying. I'm talking about facts from unbiased sources (like retailers...

Ryan Dancey - D&D in a Death Spiral

YMMV, but it seems to me that people (people who were actually interested in 4e that is) were much more excited about getting their hands on PHB2 (again, primarily b/c of the Barbarian, Bard and Druid) than they were about Manual of the Planes or Open Grave. I really wouldn't be surprised at all...

Ryan Dancey - D&D in a Death Spiral

Is it really surprising that the PHB2 would be very popular? People have been talking excitedly about the PHB2 since the core books came out last summer. It contains three core classes (the Barbarian, Bard and Druid) which have been the most talked about "missing" classes in 4e. Plus, it's the...

    PHB2 sold out!

I just don't get people who can see the words "sold out" and "bestseller list" in connection with a 4e book and come to the conclusion that 4e must be failing. Really? Seriously?

WotC puts a stop to online sales of PDFs

I had a thought this morning about this very thing. What if that's not true? What if (and this is pure unsubstantiated conjecture, I know), but what if against all logic and reason WotC actually sees a spike in sales after these PR fiascos just because of the extra publicity they generate? It...

Anyone else feel indifferent about the PDF thing?

I think the decision to end all .pdf sales was pretty dumb, but I'm not really upset about it. It certainly won't affect my RPG buying habits (which are pretty spartan anyway, and never involved .pdf purchases).

How much worldbuilding should novice GMs do? (forked thread)

For a novice DM, I would suggest getting a good starting adventure (like Keep on the Borderlands or Sunless Citadel), reading it thoroughly a couple of times, imagining what the players might do in certain situations and sort of playing through the module in their head and possibly adding side...

Forked from "An Epiphany" thread: Is World Building "Necessary"?

I'm not sure 100% improv gaming is a good fit for the "casual" gamer crowd. It seems to me that learning to improvise an entertaining adventure completely off the cuff requires a lot more work than familiarizing yourself with a pre-written adventure well enough to deal with unexpected player...

Forked from "An Epiphany" thread: Is World Building "Necessary"?

What time? You're assuming that I'm making my players wait on something. I don't see where you're getting this idea. You seem to have some pretty strong assumptions about the way games are run that you're applying to what I'm saying that are leading you to draw a lot of false conclusions. I ask...

Forked from "An Epiphany" thread: Is World Building "Necessary"?

I'm not sure how it can directly contradict your own experiences, since I'm talking about the way I run my game and I'm pretty sure we've never played an RPG together. I'm not arguing that railroading doesn't exist, just that asking players to talk to the DM before changing the entire focus of...

Forked from "An Epiphany" thread: Is World Building "Necessary"?

Unfortunately, you're still failing to grasp what I've been saying. There are no limitations. The players can chose to do whatever they want. Asking them to tell to me about choices that drastically change the direction of the campaign before they make them isn't a limit on those choices.

DMs: what have you learned from PLAYING that has made you a better DM?

You know, just because someone says they like something about 4e, it doesn't mean they're saying it didn't exist in 3e or that every other version of D&D before 4e somehow sucked. Is it really necessary to take this nice, positive thread and turn it into an edition war?

Forked from "An Epiphany" thread: Is World Building "Necessary"?

I don't have to do anything of the sort, because there's no "railroad box" to think outside. That's an unfounded assumption on your part about my games. The fact that I expect my players to give me some advance notice before completely changing their current focus in the campaign in no way...

Yeah, the whole "wearing a gamer t-shirt at a cocktail party" bit pretty much sets the tone. :p

The other side of the coin

Possibly, but I've also seen plenty of play where the scenario runs like this... DM: You find the lever that activates the trap. Player: I disable the lever somehow. DM: OK. The trap is disabled. That scenario can happen regardless of the presence or abscence of a skill system and entirely...
