Why doesn't WotC license older editions?

On the thread topic as a whole, I think it's not necessary. The OGL has already allowed hobbyists to take up the banner of previous editions of D&D and produce new content. I just purchased an honest-to-goodness OD&D (1974) adventure... a compatible product, anyway... from Brave Halfling...

Top Ten Reasons AD&D Is Fun

Good points, OP. I particularly like the layered approach of the rules. In 3E the not entirely accurate but not entirely inaccurate stereotype is that if you change one rule, the entire edifice comes crashing down. Certainly in 1E and editions of the same provenance, if you change one thing...

D20 - Most Aesthetically Pleasing Die

Obviously the D20: it can roll 1-20, 1-10, 1-5 and 1-2 with ease. If you've got a quick enough wit, it can even roll 1-4. Combine it with another D20 and it can also roll 1-8, 1-40, 1-80 or 1-100. And that's only if you always use every face. If you are willing to go with "roll again" faces...

    Wizards Website Survey

I might be interested if they had some OD&D content. Imagine if DDI was not just "All 4th Edition All the Time", but supported every edition of D&D. That would be rather neat.

The New 4th Edition God-Killing Rules

This is one thing that I think 4E is doing right: giving regular stats for these critters. I don't buy that whole 2E thing about not being able to kill these critters, they're too powerful, etc. The D&D world is 'Nam, and if it's in 'Nam the PCs will want to napalm it. Tiamat and Vecna are good...

    Crazy BattleTech Theory

Here's Korgoth's original Crazy BattleTech Theory (tm): The original 5 Successor States represent the different types of government in Plato's Politeia (given from best to worst): Davion / Federated Suns - Aristocracy (rule by merit) Kurita / Draconis - Timocracy (rule by honor) Steiner /...

    BattleTech

I dunno... that's more of the ol' 3025 charm to me. Military designs are rarely "perfect"... they have to work with what they've got. Maybe one Mech was designed on a world that has a good heavy equipment industry, so it's big and mounts a large autocannon, but it's slow as heck because they...

    BattleTech

The point of my invocation of Federation Commander was to show an example of an old school wargame that can have the rules simplified and tightened up without having to change anything fundamental about the game. BattleTech doesn't need to compete with the latest anime. It just needs to do the...

    BattleTech

See... Federation Commander did that for Star Fleet Battles but not in a 4E way. FedCom streamlined SFB but didn't change the basics. I think that BattleTech could be successfully FedCommed. But 4Eed... no, when you take something with such a cadre of brand loyalty and turn the fundamentals on...

Will the CPSIA harm the role playing games market?

Here's what you do: the retailer gets a bunch of stickers that say "For Ages 13+" and sticks them on all the products. That doesn't make you bulletproof, but it helps. Obviously it doesn't work where that age claim is found to be "unreasonable", or where the packaging or advertising can be...

    BattleTech

That's cool. I'll have to look into it... 4th Succession War is cool. I actually picked up the 4th Succession War "Battlepack" some years back... it was a number of representative scenarios and a special map, plus some historical overview. Too bad about the copyright issues re: the iconic...

    BattleTech

I played back in the ol' 3025 days. I always liked the idea of the Succession Wars... brutal slugfests of faltering states that can no longer produce what they are sending into battle. Sort of a grinding, hopeless Eastern Front kind of feeling over all of it. I never took to all that Clan...

    Star Trek RPG

I'll go out on a limb here and suggest Spirit of the Shatner... er, Century. It would take some adaptation (especially vis a vis the utter lethality of personal energy weapons) but it just seems like a good fit to me. On a side not, I just got back from another rousing game of Federation...

Har! Check this out: malevolent and benign I love it. Let's give 'er a few rolls: Flameclaw Howler Yeah. I can see that. And: Icewarped Hordeling Alright, and we'll finish off with this pair: Deathbond Hulk and Thunderblood Ripper Oh yeah. That's the stuff. The great thing is that a...

Forked Thread: Should players know the rules?

If you're playing 3E, 4E, Flames of War, Field of Glory, Starfleet Battles, Federation Commander or Air War, you should probably know the rules. If you're playing OD&D, Petal Throne, Call of Cthulhu or Traveller, knowing the rules probably isn't necessary.

How much money do plan on purchasing 4E/GSL products this year?

There's probably a "backwards compatibility" issue at work for a number of people. Back when 1E came around, you could still use your OD&D stuff with it (especially if you used Supplement I: Greyhawk)... in fact the 1E MM was in many ways a transitional book. And you could use all your 1E and...

How much money do plan on purchasing 4E/GSL products this year?

Currently, I have no plans to buy 4E stuff, so I'll vote $0. However, if they reprint the core books with included errata, I may (see below) buy a PHB at least. I also heard that they're going to have some necromancy rituals posted in Feb. I don't know whether it's subscription only or whatnot...
