[WotC's recent insanity] I think I've Figured It Out

The problem I have about the "kill them and take their stuff" meme is that it's actually false. The notion of the meme is that old school D&D was about killing monsters and taking their stuff. And that's simply not true... at most it was about taking their stuff, but you only had to kill them...

[WotC's recent insanity] I think I've Figured It Out

Fair enough. I'm just comparing some of my old school experiences with my experience playing at Encounters. And the contrast is so close to your caricature it's remarkable. On the other hand, that's choosing some of my best old school experiences with my worst experience playing D&D ever, so I...

Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG from Goodman Games

Check this out: Goodman Games • View topic - The DCC RPG and Spellslinging wherein Goodman describes the magic system. If that is the magic system, this game is going to rock on toast. Toast served by a bikini-clad Liv Tyler while flying on a rocket car through an Aerosmith video.

    Okay, now I'm worried...

DDI: so easy, a caveman could do it.

It sure seems that way sometimes.

    Class Compendium: Gone?

There is a thread that EN World's (new?) forum software will not actually allow me to link to... it is located on the WOTC D&D forum, 4e General Discussion... it is called "Class Compendium cancelled?". According to post #204, an unsourced report by some forum member, the Class Compendium and...

    First Gamma World Game!

It sounds fascinating, in a way. It would actually make sort of an interesting business model to have all their RPG products released in this way: like "Dungeons and Dragons presents Dark Sun" and Dark Sun is a $40 box plus two $30 expansions, all complete with tiles, cards, a little digest...

    Is it time for 5E?

Maybe WOTC should change up their game plan and try sticking with a system for a while. Arguably, the "big shakeup" model has not been working for them. 3.5 went OK, people were willing to accept it. But will people accept it over and over again? Where I come from, the "Do-Over" has a rule: if...

    D&D 4E [Essentials] Heroes of the... ?

Heh. The Samurai was the one I wasn't serious about, actually. I think you could do a perfectly reasonable Samurai using the Slayer (using the his longsword/katana two-handed and wearing scale-equivalent armor). I am serious about the monks, though. For the Half-Oni I was thinking of Half-"Ogre...

I'm considering dropping Pathfinder to return to D&D 2e.

There's nothing wrong with 2E. I mean, there are some options that I would avoid including, and I think it plays best when limited to the core books... but yeah, it's fine. I like the concept of the 2E PHB for the base rules and the 1E monster books for the critters. 1E had awesome monster books.

    D&D 4E [Essentials] Heroes of the... ?

Heroes of the Forgotten Lands would have: Warlord (Leader) Monk - Shaolin (Defender) Monk - Wudang (Striker) Bard (Controller) Samurai (Striker) Human Gnome Goliath Half-Oni Warforged Shifter

My preferences for D&D are odd

Perhaps, as Kitsune suggested, you should consider taking an Old School version of D&D and adding on your own stuff? You could use Mentzer (BECM), or even just take OD&D and come up with your own "Supplement N: Ferratushawk". I think that most of this stuff works best if kept simple. Example...

    Is D&D (WotC) flaming out?

If we were in the SCA and you suggested rolling dice instead of putting on armor and swinging your weapon, then we'd have that discussion. What I'm trying to say is this: Old School is about saying smart things, New School is about rolling hot dice. They cannot get any more different than that...

    Class Compendium: Gone?

One of the execs at coporate found out that a D&D product at a retailer had been shoplifted at one point, and so made the decision that they were not going to sell any more products. That'll fix those shoplifters!

    Is D&D (WotC) flaming out?

I think that 3.x was a huge change over what came before. Before, to play the game you had to say what you were doing; since 3E (4E is the same) you just roll the dice and add your modifiers. "Roll to see it" is an obvious example: before you had to say where you were searching. Now it doesn't...

[WotC's recent insanity] I think I've Figured It Out

OK, I see what you're aiming at. I tend to agree, then: if there are any books left to publish, they are books about taking the already ample body of game materials and making something interesting out of them. My favorite book from 3E (my least favorite edition) was Lords of Madness; I haven't...

[WotC's recent insanity] I think I've Figured It Out

Whaddaya mean "next"? There is no "next". The fact is that outside of combat, you scarcely need any rules for anything at all. So what is there to actually write? What is there to actually come up with? Just "fluff", basically. See, the whole model of releasing a bazillion books full of rules...

    Shadowrun War! "Arbeit Macht Frei!"

Imperialus, I think we should stick with the text here. I don't think my formulation is an unreasonable reading of the text. Now, you probably have a good argument for Shadowrun not being like that generally, and perhaps for the text merely being a poor communication of the setting (i.e. it...

    Shadowrun War! "Arbeit Macht Frei!"

I find this rather offensive and distasteful. The premise of going to Auschwitz to re-kill a bunch of Jews to get Nazi treasure... um, no. Just no. There are some things you don't make a game out of. It's OK to touch upon the subject respectfully (and in fact it's preferable to a "whitewash"...

How to put together a BECMI mini-series...

False! The point of any thread asking for advice is to be forced to play a different game altogether. A couple years ago, 90% of posts would be telling you to play Savage Worlds instead. That would be true even if you were asking about good openings in Chess. ;) That being said, a game like...
