    memory of a thousand lifetimes

Personally, I've never been fond of making players guess whether using their limited-use ability is going to be a complete waste of time; whenever I've had characters with some sort of "after you make Y check, add +X bonus" ability, in any system, I tell the player whether they failed by a small...

Can the Revenant ability "Unnatural Vitality" be used to transfer the death effect?

This right here is why it doesn't work. Dying is not an effect a save can end; the only thing that ends the dying condition is regaining hit points. A natural 20 on a death save can allow you to regain hit points if you have healing surges available, but that's purely a special case allowance...

overlap zone and aura damage stack?

Also worth pointing out that if the aura and the zone were both ongoing damage of the same type, they wouldn't stack.

    Forced Movement into Walls

Yes to both, although depending on how legalistically you read the hazardous terrain rules in the DMG, the target should get a save to fall prone in the last safe square instead of being forced into fiery doom automatically.

    Healing Guides

Searchable pdfs are a wonderful thing. In addition to bloody path I already quoted, here's a few more, all from PHB 1: Garrote Grip (rogue 15): Hit: 2[W] + Dexterity modifier damage, and you grab the target. Until the target escapes, you have cover, and any melee attack or ranged attack that...

    Healing Guides

All descriptions of targeted effects in 4E are in the singular. Compare, for example, blinding barrage: Hit: 2[W] + Dexterity modifier damage, and the target is blinded until the end of your next turn. It's singular, even though the power affects multiple creatures. Compare also bloody path...

    D&D Group Skill Checks

The DCs in the article are the starting point. If you hadn't stopped reading, you would have seen this: Except for the different skill bonuses, the opportunity for other players to contribute rather than sit around watching one guy roll six times.... Take 20 is not part of the 4E rules.

    Attack w/ spear using Dex

Monk will be in PHB3 next March, but it can be playtested if you have a Dragon subscription. Short answer: the only way to effectively fight with a spear using Dex is to be a member of a class that a) uses Dexterity for attack and damage with its powers and b) is capable of using spears with...

Forced Movement on a Prone Target

Quoth the Errata: So yes, the bard sliding the target works. A power that allowed an ally to shift, however, would not.

    power card questions

I'm assuming you mean you bought martial power cards, not material. What class are they for? The power card decks are sold by source and by class--so, for example, the Martial Power Ranger deck has all the ranger powers from Martial Power. You probably want to start with the Player's Handbook...

New to D&D just a few questions

Don't forget that the total result of your attack roll (i.e. the 20 you rolled + all your modifiers) has to be high enough to actually hit the target. If it's not (e.g., if you roll a 20 and have a +6 attack bonus, but your target has a 27 AC), a natural 20 is an automatic hit, but not a critical.

    Help me understand quests

Quests are goals, encounters are the obstacles on the way to those goals. Sometimes the quest is accomplished directly via encounter (e.g. "Kill Orcus and take his stuff" is a quest that you complete by defeating Orcus in an encounter). Sometimes quests are ongoing plot threads that resolve...

    Broken things errata'ed, July 2009

Erm--plainly they're clarifying that the intent was to give 3 attacks, not 4, regardless of what the pre-errata version appeared to say. What's the problem?

    Broken things errata'ed, July 2009

Initiative order goes warlord, monster, rogue. Rogue and warlord are flanking monster, but monster will be able to shift/teleport away on its turn. Warlord uses guileful switch, rogue gets opportunity to sneak attack monster before it gets away. Apply the same principle to any scenario where...

    Broken things errata'ed, July 2009

Looks like RRoT now doesn't actually do anything unless you have a magic weapon or a high crit weapon. I think I'd add a caveat that if you don't get to roll any extra damage on a crit, you can roll 1d6. Other than that, good changes.

    "Marked Sourge" question (MP)

You have to resolve the attack one way or the other before the mark is applied; the target is marked when you attack it, not when you target it. Likewise, if you try to attack a target and it uses an immediate interrupt to teleport away, negating the attack, you don't mark it.

Help Me Stat the Roman Legions

You'll find them already statted up in the Monster Manual, pp. 138-140. For some reason, they're mislabeled "hobgoblins." :)

    Use of Skills Question

IMO, that's excessive. "Bounce off the paladin's shield" is purely flavor text in this instance--the meat of the action as I understand it is "tumble through enemy's spaces* to get to the statue, push the statue over." The paladin isn't actually contributing anything to that maneuver, so he...

    Use of Skills Question

I'd have made it an Athletics trap to dislodge the statue, then had the statue make an attack against every creature it might land on, like a trap.
