You might check in to Mythic Game Master Emulator (@RPGNow).
It's a $7 PDF that, pretty effectively, can remove the need for a GM. This works best as a 2-players no-GM game, IMO, but I think it can be used for one-player no-GM games.
So I've been toying with this idea lately. I think it could work well as two in-person games, one in-person and one online (G+ Hangout, Skype etc), or both online.
I am considering having two games themed thus:
1) Adventure -- modern setting, occult and magic influence pervasive but hidden...
I've always had other players in my groups with expansive libraries, so I haven't needed to buy a whole lot.
Here's where I stand right now:
- OD&D (Holmes Box with B1)
- D&D 3.5e PHB
- Eberron Player's Guide (3.5)
- D&D 4e PHB (most underused book on the shelf)
- Pathfinder Core
- Pathfinder...
Rel --thanks! You've given me plenty of inspiration there for how to incorporate some low-fantasy magic into my sky pirates game. Need to draw on some voodoo / ritual magic stuff and was thinking "Where do I find that?"
You're reassured me that I don't need to... just flavour the mechanics that...
That sounds awesome. Definitely would like seeing after-roleplay reports of that.
I don't always blog about RPGs, but when I do, I prefer Savage Worlds... random(blog); expect a post about my upcoming SW game(s) soon.
Yeah, so far I'm mostly just reflavouring adventures from Pirates of the Spanish Main to be in the sky and to include the standard steampunk elements.
I'm going to skim some of the Rippers and other setting adventures to see if there's anything useful for me later on.
Cool! Looking forward to...
While I like the idea of Sundered Skies, and would enjoy playing/running it, it just doesn't quite fit what my group wants. Since there's just four of us, and two are more casual gamers, we want to make sure we scratch the right itch as closely as we can.
We want more steampunk-y, and more...
So, one of my players and I got together today while the wives were out doing their thing and we ran The Wild Hunt as a kind of open-table playtest.
We loved every minute of it! I hadn't read more than the first paragraph of Wild Hunt, so I had to read ahead some, and actually gave away a ton...
Playing:
-Young gentleman-turned-Musketeer in a monthly Flashing Blades game
-Level Dragonborn Cleric in a Pathfinder game--now retired as of this week
GMing:
-Preparing to run a Savage Worlds game set in a steampunk world with skyships
-Considering running some miscellaneous games on G+...
Jealous. Would kill for a weekly game. I have one monthly and one semi-regular (sometimes monthly and sometimes twice a month and sometimes not for two months.)
If you're playing weekly... 3 weeks of PF, 1 week of SW. ;D
Always good to see gaming getting positive press. The quote there at the end really does sum it all up--if you're having fun, you win.
Aside: Anyone else like the fact that they're playing in classroom E6? ;)
Thanks, AngryMojo! I think that sums up my feeling about SW ruleset in general--cinematic.
I read in SW: Deluxe last night about "Dramatic Events" (p. 84, iirc... right after Chase rules.) I must say, that was a great, simple, and concise explanation of an easy to run mechanic to support...
Yeah, I can definitely see it being easier to import Martin-elements into Golarion than putting Pathfinder rules into Westeros.
Let us know how this turns out if you get to play it! I firmly believe the core of RPGs lies in taking elements from what we love in literature/film/etc and putting it...
Thanks! I think I've XP'd everyone who has contributed... this is a really useful thread so far. Cheers!
I just chatted with the other guy in our little group... he's the one who's been DM'ing PF for the last few months. We are both really excited about SW and on Saturday will run some test...
That... is exactly what I want. No matter the genre, that type of chain of events is much more interesting to me than "several big guys, beat them down."
Thanks!
So I've heard from a few people who have only passing experience with SW rules that (paraphrase) "it just doesn't do fantasy games as well" and "SW is an excellent choice for non-fantasy worlds."
Thoughts? Responses?
So far I see no reason why it would NOT work well for a fantasy game... except...
