    How about alignment?

Another vote for the 9 + a separate 'unaligned'. We have used this as house rule for quite a while. Characters can choose from any of the standard alignments, or decide to be 'unaligned'. Unaligned is different from neutral. Neutral seeks the balance. Unaligned is simply not interested or...

    D&D 1E Should 5e adopt 1e style arcane magic?

I voted no & no - and my group does not play 4th edition. You shouldn't assume those are related.

If WotC Released D&D 3.75 Tomorrow....

3.5E is my game of preference right now, and I just don't see how you can 'tweak' away the problems with it by a point upgrade. The support doesn't mean a whole lot to me, so I don't need to buy a new set of core books which would in fact have more power up gimme items for players rather than...

    Multi-classing, yay or nay?

I vote yes for multi-classing. However, I have no interest in having hundreds of classes to choose from and in spending vast amounts of time to optimize. I prefer a selection of core classes, with some sub classes. Multi-classing to help you build a character concept or fill a niche.

    Miniatures, yay or nay?

We have used miniatures, or at least some token representation of character position, in most of our games going back to pre 1st edition. We prefer the battlefield visualization. However, I am somewhat troubled by the thought of a game 'requiring' them. Don't have the patience or skill to...

    "He's beyond my healing ability..."

Since I want consistency, and drama like this from time to time even if it is cliche, we instead decided to HR the death and dying rules to accomodate some action below zero HP. This rule works for characters, NPCs, monsters, etc. Yes, it does add a bit of house keeping (an additional save)...

    "He's beyond my healing ability..."

Sorry if my comment was not clear. It simply refers to the fact the players have healing ability and they are not allowed to have it work without explanation.

    "He's beyond my healing ability..."

I can see both sides. My bias is, if I put the players in the action (scene, whatever you want to call it) as much as possible they are able to interact, use their skills and abilities, to alter the environment. I find it breaks the verisimilitude if we switch their ability to influence their...

Congratulations. Send my well wishes to the SilverMoon adventuring company.

    Should this be fixed

Since this is a group of friends, a non-confrontational discussion about how the others feel about this kind of action might be enough to change the way he plays. Something like, "You know, we were really disappointed in not getting any treasure. The other characters could role play their...

    Should this be fixed

The DM put the treasure in the game and the players flushed it out. I recommend you let it stand, and the DM should NOT replace the treasure. Its fine for the Dwarf character's player to role play situations, but should expect the other party members to role play back. The other characters...

    Pre-published or self-written modules?

I add written modules in my campaign here and there. If I find them well done and fit the world and need at the time, why not. (there is a village called Hommlett in my world - go figure) Most often, it is my own material for a number of reasons. I'll echo many of the posts here; I am...

    D&D's Army

Barad The Gnome. Here is to good friends brought together through a game well played. Huzzah. I can say that some around our gaming table have been together over 30 years. That is the serious part of the business. Long live D&D as a way to have fun, adventure, humor & creativity with those...

    What if a level 1 killed a level 40

What if a level 1 killed a level 40? I submit he is now DM. Turn your books over to him and roll up a character. Now its your turn to see if you can munchkin the rules to get the DM chair back. Best of luck with your game.

    Designing the Perfect D&D

Critical hits without confirmation give more weight to less powerful creatures that only crit on a natural 20. As pointed out, it does not happen often, but if you give a large group of otherwise not very threatening monsters a weapon that does high damage on a critical it can skew the chance...

    Arms

I wouldn't spend too much time searching. If you don't find something after a little searching, just take a monster that has almost everything else you want and add serrated bone extensions. Make up a name, change the description, and presto, you are the proud owner of a home made monster. If...

    Designing the Perfect D&D

As a point of reference we were still playing heavily house ruled 1E when I started to change my mind. Never played 2E or 4E (apparently we only play odd editions). I readily concede that 3/3.5E makes level gaps worse mechanically. My current view was cemented by our 3/3.5E play. Though as I...

    Designing the Perfect D&D

I can see where you are looking for a certain 'cinematic' feel to the wounded, dying & deaths door status - and that variable negative does not fit your model. However, we use a variable model to counter the instant death that higher level monsters are capable of doing when characters HPs are...

    Designing the Perfect D&D

Hi Jester, That is much to digest. I better understand how you intend to implement the slower progression. Dialing way back on the stat increases makes your proposal far more feasible. Though I don't like the feel of 4E from reading it (full disclosure - never played it), I do like the...

Encounter with a good aligned vampire, what do you do?

Even if the players 'know' all undead must be evil, having one show up as good should be enough of a dichotomy that it invokes some player doubt about what action to take. The moral dilemma should be apparent. By their nature moral dilemmas are not black and white. Some people are...
