Who else is excited about the head start access this weekend?

My first experience was pretty fun. I ran into some bugs with the chat system, but it was fun to run through a dungeon with other people. I can see how the DM mode would add to the game. Looking forward to the release!

D&D Movie/TV What would a good D&D movie be like?

I've been thinking about this since yesterday and I think How To Train Your Dragon is a great example of a fantasy movie done well. I'd love to see a D&D movie that hits the same notes.

D&D Movie/TV What would a good D&D movie be like?

If you click the link for the "Complete List" you'll recognize a number of well loved films in the list. Not many are heroic or epic fantasy with medieval themes though. And not a lot of blockbusters, although I was surprised by how well the "Mummy" movies did.

D&D Movie/TV What would a good D&D movie be like?

100% agree. The TRPG isn't about me as a person leaving our world and entering a fantasy world. Why should the movie use that device? To people that aren't familiar with the game, it will give the impression that Dungeons & Dragons is about people playacting that they leave this world and go to...

D&D Movie/TV What would a good D&D movie be like?

A D&D movie needs 3 elements: heroic fantasy, an ensemble cast (the party), and a good (can we hope for great?) story. Any other overt connections to the tabletop game or the FR novels only threaten its success. I don't think the hobby needs people watching the movie asking, "will playing the...

D&D Movie/TV What would a good D&D movie be like?

I'm fascinated with this whole movie thing. My feeling is that the movie should not be about the game itself, but should have a story that echoes the kind of stories that can be told in the game.

D&D 5E Still no OGL (or other license) for 5e? Why not clone 5e with the OGL?

Two ways to look at it… 1) The money going into this movie will probably spur Hasbro on to produce a lot of licensed products (Lego? Lunchboxes? Pajamas?). Probably way more licensed products than we currently see. 2) The money going into this movie will probably sour Hasbro on working with...

D&D 5E Rage of Demons more details.

There were some Adventurer's League modules for the new season, but these are different from the Rage of Demons adventure path book.

D&D 5E D&D classic settings or new worlds to explore?

I love the old settings (1st and 2nd Edition). I enjoy going back to those books and fondly remember the adventures that I had in those settings and modules. I sometimes have pangs of nostalgia where I want to revisit those old adventures. That said, I could not possibly care less if they...

    D&D 5E So.... hide?

Fair enough. I guess I wouldn't quibble if the poster had said "virtually guaranteed" or something similar. I piped in because it felt unfair to argue against the rogue power by citing an encounter where they had an opportunity to hide before initiative was rolled as a "guarantee" of anything...

    D&D 5E So.... hide?

But even that's still not guaranteed, right? The enemy, at minimum, gets their passive perception against hide.

    D&D 5E So.... hide?

The rogue 2 still has to succeed on their hide check from the previous round. It's not automatic. Advantage is a pretty big… advantage in combat, but I don't think it makes the rogue completely OP compared to other melee classes. How is the halfling rogue guaranteed to be hidden on the 1st...

D&D 5E When do you think they will announce the next book?

Sounds good. I was not picking that up from what you were saying earlier about the storyline being "just in a video game." I agree with what you've said in the above quote and appreciate the clarification. Fair enough. I've been making the assumption that the TTRPG would always be part of the...

D&D 5E When do you think they will announce the next book?

I appreciate that you were willing to correct yourself to use storyline instead of AP. That mistake was near the heart of our disagreement. I believe the rest of your example doesn't hold water because the D&D team has been consistent in saying that a storyline is the underlying theme for a...

D&D 5E When do you think they will announce the next book?

I can't tell if you are referring to Mearls or me as the unnamed person who did make this statement. For clarity, Mearls said that they are looking at two storylines per year. You misquoted him by saying that they would do two APs per year. I corrected you by pointing back to the original...

D&D 5E When do you think they will announce the next book?

I suppose you are just trying to be funny, but suggesting that the plot in a video game is the same thing as the brand storylines might create confusion. Better to think of D&D storylines as periodic marketing campaigns that promote all the various D&D related product lines (RPG, minis, aides...

D&D 5E When do you think they will announce the next book?

I think it's reasonable to expect 2 APs a year, but I will point out that a storyline is not the same thing as an AP. The reporter asked how often we can expect new storylines. Tyranny of Dragons, which is the specific storyline referenced in the interview, was supported by several different...

Gen Con Takes Stand For Inclusiveness

Private groups can make their own rules, religious or not. Consider Augusta National (the golf club) as a secular example. Do I get to decide if I belong to Augusta National? Or does the membership committee of Augusta National get to make that decision? If I say I'm a member of Augusta...
