D&D (2024) Real Character Generation in 2024 PHB

5e Backgrounds have always offered additional skills, tools and/or languages. No problem with that. It's the fact they have now tied in ability scores and origin feats all into one big feature that I take issue with, especially as the features are rigid with no option for customisation.

D&D (2024) Real Character Generation in 2024 PHB

Backgrounds are the one area of the 2024 rules that I explicitly dislike. Having spent years moving away from rigid choices in favour of customisation options, this pulls everything right back to square one. Tying ability scores, origin feat, skills and tools all into a single choice seems a...

D&D (2024) Should paladin's aura of protection be "normalized" a little?

Change it to a Reaction, give it a decent radius (30'?) and have it last until start of Paladin's next turn. Useable proficiency bonus times per long rest.

D&D (2024) Polymorph temp hp remain

Suspect that one will be houseruled until an errata or sage advice comes out. No way it's intentional.

D&D (2024) Not loving weapon mastery with beginners

A lot of the comments on this thread seem to imply that new players are totally unable to comprehend even the simplest of concepts. Why? There's a few people I play with who aren't the sharpest knives in the drawer but we've been using the 2024 rules for all of 2 sessions now and even the guy...

D&D (2024) Not loving weapon mastery with beginners

I'd disagree on that. If your character has applied a condition or other effect then it's up to you to remind the DM of that if he/she forgets. As a player, I always remind the DM, for example, that he has disadvantage on his attack rolls because my character is dodging. If the DM forgets and I...

D&D (2024) Not loving weapon mastery with beginners

Sap and Slow are the only ones that the DM really needs to even think about, and the players should take responsibility for reminding the DM of those conditions.

Why are you tracking your player's masteries? That's their job!

D&D (2024) Not loving weapon mastery with beginners

I'm just not seeing what is so complicated or time consuming? You have, at most, 3 mastery properties to choose from and, unless you're allowing ridiculous weapon juggling, likely only one (maybe 2) in use by each player on a given round. Most masteries are very straightforward mechanically. Why...

D&D (2024) Temp HP - a hidden nerf to druids and others

I wish WotC had persevered with the template idea, rather than this version of the Wildshape rules. I know the feedback on the templates in UA was bad but I'm fairly convinced it was the execution rather than the concept that was the issue for most people. The templates in UA were just weak and...

D&D (2024) Temp HP - a hidden nerf to druids and others

As I was reading through the thread I was thinking literally exactly this ^^, with the caveat that I've not played a moon druid 2024 yet so don't know for certain. The number of temp hp does seem laughably low. Even at 20th level, a moon druid will get 60 temp hp, which will maybe last one round?

D&D (2024) Ranger: is Horde Breaker a bit too good for level 3?

As has been pointed out by many people, that is simply not true. You do not get another turn when you take a reaction. You simply take a reaction.

D&D (2024) Ranger: is Horde Breaker a bit too good for level 3?

Yes, so if you get, for example, an opportunity attack on the enemy's turn due to them attempting to move outside of your reach, you can make an attack with your reaction and still get sneak attack damage as it is on a different turn. I think you're a bit confused over what a turn is.

D&D (2024) Ranger: is Horde Breaker a bit too good for level 3?

Even if you manage to get a reaction attack on your own turn, it's still limited to one attack from horde breaker "Once on each of your turns".

D&D (2024) Ranger: is Horde Breaker a bit too good for level 3?

Horde Breaker has nothing to do with reactions. It only works on your turn and potentially gives one extra attack in certain, limited circumstances.

    D&D (2024) Fixing General Feats

Personally I don't agree with your view of his videos but everyone's entitled to their own opinion. What I would say however is that he plays more D&D than probably 99.9% of the rest of us. He's also had the new PHB for several months now. He is saying, and demonstrating with DPR calculations...

    D&D (2024) D&D 2024 PHB errata thread

I'd suggest it's more likely that they were struggling for space and thought they could cut that line out because nobody would really think that this sort of thing needed to be spelled out explicitly.

D&D (2024) Greatweapon fighting style? Is this another joke? Did everyone at WotC failed elementary school math classes?

Completely agree with this. The fighting style is about reliability and simplicity, not power. Pick up a greatsword, take GWF and, at 4th, take GWM and you are going to do steady, reliable damage. You will be doing a minimum of 12 damage on a hit and 4 on a miss with a bonus action attack on a...
