    Roles - do they work?

I had a Ghost Elven (the glow-in-the-dark subrace from Dragon, not the undead template) Fighter/Whitehorn/Beloved of Valarian (can't get more unicorn-y than that, folks :) ) who's chosen weapon was the halberd. In melee, she and her mount were very easily the Defender role, but mounted up...

The Problem of Balance (and how to get rid of it)

Yes. It would help a great deal if flavor was not always so hardwired in with particular mechanics. My examples were also ment to show I wasn't trying to be "superman" either. As for making choices and being less powerful for them, that's one thing. But there seems to be a kind of drop-off...

The Problem of Balance (and how to get rid of it)

But is that because the wheels are glued in place and they can't even spin? The bike isn't much used to someone that way either. Just "safer" perhapse.

    Roles - do they work?

It wasn't perfect, but it was a lot better than 2E, and certainly more free than 4E. (I think this has turned far more 3E vs 4E than it was supposed to...)

    Roles - do they work?

It has everything to do with them. You said they were for minis combat. I responded that I do not WANT to play a minis combat game (such as the original Chainmail that spawned the original D&D, or Battle System, the minis ad-on rule for AD&D.) I want to play Dungeons & Dragons. Not a tactical...

    Roles - do they work?

Yes! I agree completely. I play 4E because that's what my group moved onto. I initialy had very large hopes for the system. It just went in opposite directions from what I hoped for. My DM got burned out on 3E. 3E was NOT kind to DMs. It was a gigantic hassle for DMs, in fact. It was also...

    Roles - do they work?

Let me try this again.... I want to take the package of shtick, tropes, and trappings that I want, and be able to play it in the role style I want. Having roles so utterly glued onto the classes prevents anything of this sort.

    Roles - do they work?

They were amorphous before and they always had meaning. Sure, any class couldn't fit any role, but you really could easily accomplish three of these new roles in most cases, I think.

    Roles - do they work?

Well...: That would be how. See, that's my point. I would like both of those things to be up to me.

    Roles - do they work?

I don't want to play Chainmail or Battle System. I want to play D&D. Which seems to be about a single non-minion attack.. Well, this would explain why I am more an more irritated with combat. (Off-topic rant: Know what else irritates me? Monsters can recharge their frakin' Encounter...

    D&D 4E Firearms in 4E

Er.. no. It was about me musing how I wished things had been handled differently with regard to relative statistics and rate of fire. Why would I advocate actually changing the tables? What is is. WotC isn't going to go revamping a book on my opinion. Anyway, it was ment to explain why I had...

The Problem of Balance (and how to get rid of it)

First of all, I didn't think we were just talking about 4E here. Sure.. I do think it's got some of the largest and most current "issues", but.. well like I said, it's a continuation of a trend I've been noticing. I tend to pursue character concepts. To build out of the game, or sometimes if...

The Problem of Balance (and how to get rid of it)

You know.. I think more than a few people have come into this thread, reading the title of the thread in different ways. I, at least, read it as "The Problem of Balance (and how to get rid of it [the Problem])" It's seeming to me now that many people have come into it having read it as...

    D&D 4E Firearms in 4E

Er.. wwwhy? People have been decrying the handling of Crossbows as compaied to bows all throughout the thread. And my end result was how firearms might compare to that. I'm not off-topic. I um.. I don't quite understand this comment's application. Diiid I try to mark anything as Load...

    Roles - do they work?

I'd have to argue that the 3.5 shaman was a controler with a minor in striker. The only leader-like features were Warding of the Spirits and Recall Spirit. They were artillery, not buffers or ally-puppeters. And a leader of a group has nothing to do with the Leader role. (Which I actually...

Yes. That is what I was saying. I was being somewhat snarky about it.

    D&D 4E Firearms in 4E

Before saying how I think Guns should be handled, I first want to talk about how I think other projectile weapons should be handled. I have a lot of problems with the existing ranged weapons already. Some of them are problems I've had for a long time, though. I have problems with the...

Right... Shaman is being wasted on the Leader role. (Opinion)

The Problem of Balance (and how to get rid of it)

Well.. except that now "combat" and "magic" are all exactly the same. Now EVERYONE has "spells".
