    Low-magic settings and Core mechanics

Here you go Harry, as requested...the NPC class 'Deacon'...useful as the rank and file of the priesthood...capable of minor magics...but nothing extreme. Obviously, as a minor NPC class...it's intentionally weak. At the bottom I've added our (as of yet untried) optional additions to the class...

    Low-magic settings and Core mechanics

nice variant I like that variant Harry...it kind of captures the feel, of the scholarly wizard-advisor to the king...powerful enough to be at the centre of plenty of intrigues, but not so powerful as to be teleporting all over the place dropping fireballs left, right and centre. I'd be happy...

    Low-magic settings and Core mechanics

High level magic is the real problem High level magic (and not magic in general) seems to be the real problem for people trying to capture a low-magic feel. (let's face it, 'charm person' and 'alter self' aren't the problem, 'greater teleport' and 'raise dead' are...) The core rulebooks...

What is "grim and gritty" and "low magic" anyway?

I'm quite enjoying this thread... Role Playing is an act of imagination...I think everybody agrees on that. What I'm seeing in this thread is a basic break down into two different TYPES of imagination. Group one -- who's imagination focusses on their role in the world...and playing the part...

What is "grim and gritty" and "low magic" anyway?

Maybe its just me, but I always just assumed Grim and Gritty was a term to bridge a barrier that keeps DND scenes from easily being imagined...namely that the rules provide unexplained super-resilliency to all characters. No matter how you define HP as an 'abstract measure of ability to stay in...

    Creating a magicless AC system

Now Pennstudd...those ideas I like! I'm going to pitch them being adopted in our game...

    Creating a magicless AC system

well, in our case...the defense bonus is not intended to be a full replacement for heavy armours and magic...just a supplament so that characters need not rely on these tools as much...So your 20th level fighter is not a lame duck when he wears +1 leather armour instead of +5 full plate. Again...

    Creating a magicless AC system

I hear ya... for anybody trying a low-magic OR light armour campaign AC's will often become a big problem. There are some feats out there which provide non-magical bumps to AC, but to be useful they end up being unbalancing (players who burn a feat on a 'super dodge' end up far more powerful...

Looking for a mass combat system...

How about Fields of Blood? I'm surprised more people haven't mentioned Fields of Blood's system. It plays exceptionally well. There are only two things about the system I don't like. It (generally) glosses over the number of creatures per unit as an unimportant detail, and therefore gives no...

Non-Magical Ranger and Bard class variants

Here's a quick solution that I heard (and liked)...each time your non-spellcasting variant class would have gained spells of a new level -- they get a bonus feat instead. this meanst, of course that, through 20 levels bards get 6 o4 7 additional feats, while paladins and rangers get 4. The...

Fields of Blood: The Book of War sold out

It's worth remembering that the FIRST version of FoB took over two years to be released after Eden first announced it. don't get me wrong - it's an awesome ruleset, and I'm glad they took the time to get it right. I just find it kind of funny that this dicussion(about rushed revisions) are...

    Action/Hero Points

AP rule variants Action Points/Hero Points/Action Dice are perhaps one of the best innovatiosn the system has seen since the launch of 3e. There's a wealth of ways you can use them to tweak the rule set perfectly. For instance. CHARISMA... An option I've used is very similar to d20 Modern...
