Why does epic level play entail treating death as a "speed bump"?

In response to the OP, I think you've got two perspectives, at either end of the spectrum. On the right, old school players, those of us who have been around since yada yada colored box and so forth, for whom death is a part of play, and you either pay the price for raise...

    Dungeoncraft - 4th edition style

To perhaps add a bit to the awesome creative juices flowing in this thread, here is what I'm doing with the ideas that I'm eagerly borrowing from earlier posts. A wicked sorcerer set in motion a ritual that would elevate him to godhood, and he would rule over everything within 1,000 miles of...

    Dungeoncraft - 4th edition style

Wow. This is the best thread ever. I totally plan to do a Points of Light campaign based on undead in the world, for all of, and perhaps only one of- the reasons that you all have listed here. This is completely fantastic stuff. THANKS.

    D&D 4E A player's perspective on 4e

Perhaps I should have been more clear. This is not a "D&D 4e is just a video game!" post, or something similar. I like 4e alot. In fact, I did not like 3.5, and quit playing D&D. Running this 4e game was my first time to DM for D&D in perhaps 3 years, and the first time to touch anything...

    D&D 4E A player's perspective on 4e

Over the weekend I got some friends together for GaryCon. I had Tomb of Horrors, but I was reluctant to run it, because of its sheer brutality and level of complexity- my players are not as gleeful about death and frustrating traps and puzzles as some. Anyway, instead of Tomb of Horrors, I ran...

    Speculating about traps

Anybody got any ideas, or tried to put any traps together? I've seen the boulder trap, but its the only one I've seen floating around. It occurred to me that some cool trap ideas included a ballista- I guess it could fall under "trap", some armor plating on the front that gives the operator...

    Monsters/Rules List Compilation PDF

I'm not having any luck with the PDF - I can download it, but it won't open, and says that its damaged.. Just me?

Anyone else coming back into the fold because of 4.0?

I left D&D behind shortly after 3.5 came out. I was frustrated with how the game worked, seemed geared toward min/maxing, and general bean counting and rules lawyering. I moved into the land of indie gaming, and thought I'd never look back. The pendulum has swung back though, and I find...
