D&D 5E Encounters per day and session time

Thanks for the reply. My initial post must have been poorly worded as I've never made the assumption that an adventuring day = single game session. What I was curious about is how DMs who adhere to the 6-8 encounters/day guidelines pace their adventures. I suspected they were stretching a single...

D&D 5E Encounters per day and session time

Thanks for the replies everyone. I'm not sure where I gave off the impression that 1 adventure day = 1 session, but that's never been something I've strived for in my games. Most of my sessions encompass multiple adventuring days as that's the style that works for our group. im not sure...

D&D 5E Encounters per day and session time

For the most part that's what I've been doing - lets the actions of the PCs, their consequences, and the actions/reactions of the NPCs & monsters drive the number of encounters. I abandoned the CR system mid-HotDQ because it wasn't a good guide and went with encounters that I thought would...

D&D 5E Encounters per day and session time

Yeah, that pretty much describes how we run our games now. The problem is, while that's worked in the past, it's made for some very boring sessions in 5e; out of my four regular players only one is really excited about continuing with 5e and even he wants more challenge out of our combats. I'm...

D&D 5E Helping melee combat to be more competitive to ranged.

This might have been true in prior editions, but it's trivially easy for 5e ranged PCs to get competative ACs, and given that Fighters make some of he best ranged combatants, they'll also have the hit points to survive long enough for the rest of the party to focus fire.

D&D 5E Encounters per day and session time

I've read a lot of threads lately where posters claim that the 6-8 med/hard encounters* per adventuring day is the best way to balance PC abilities against the standard monsters. I accept that the game system is based on this assumption, however outside of OD&D I have never found this many...

    D&D 5E 2016 Feats Review

Definitely agree about total cover being the only practical cover needed so long as you can move. As for Eldritch Spear shenanigans, I've only personally witnessed it a handful of times in my games, but when I did it caught me off guard. First time was when I foolishly had two dragons swoop in...

    D&D 5E 2016 Feats Review

I think you should reconsider Spell Sniper's design grade. If ignoring cover for SS is bad for the game, then surely the same can be said for ignoring cover with ranged attack spells. The range boost also works a little too well with the Warlock's Eldritch Blast-boosting invocations.

D&D 5E there aren't enough slow Dwarves with Axes! ;)

Good call. The lack of a base charge option was very jarring during my group's first few sessions with 5e.

D&D 5E there aren't enough slow Dwarves with Axes! ;)

I ran into a similar issue while running RoT, and the supremacy of ranged combatants surprised everyone at the table, including the longbow-wielding Hunter/Assassin who tended to dominate combat. In my games I've addressed the problem by: - removing most combat-related feats (CE, SS, and GWM...

D&D 5E Do you think Wizard is a Support Class or a DPR class?

I've had a lot of fun playing my Fire Genasi Fire Mage (Evoker). I like it because unlike a Red Dragon Sorc, I have a wider variety of spells at my disposal. Sure, my illusions aren't as versatile as an Illusionist's and my undead don't pack as much a punch as a Neckrmancer's, I still have...

D&D 5E RoT: Metallic Dragon Council

I had my council take place in the cloud mansion of the gold dragon delegate; the place was staffed with contsructs and lesser celestials.

    D&D 5E Rot grubs

The idea of using rot grubs to kill the Tarrasque is awesome! I once had player choose to have their character's arm removed due to failing a save against rot grubs. Nasty monster; I'm glad to see them return.

D&D 5E Come up with other Books that WotC could release with a Forgotten Realms theme

I'd like a SCAG-style books for Cormyr/Sembia/The Dalelands/Moonsea and Amn/Calimshan. If they're going to keep using FR as their flagship setting, I want them to branch out beyond the Sword Coast in their APs and sourcebooks.

    D&D 5E Published war-themed adventures?

I ran most of RoT as a war campaign with the players at the heart of the spy/counter-spy operation against the Cult, and in their downtime the party directed the armed forces of the Lord's Alliance.

D&D 5E RoT: Disappointing first council session

I just narrated each council meeting. As written, you could have 9+ NPCs arguing with each other and "involving" the PCs or just introduce each leader, summarize their stance on a given issue, and then give the party a brief description of the events of the council. Incidentally, between the...
