D&D 5E Dispel Magic vs buffs - does the caster know what target has active?

For one, all the spells you listed are 3rd level or lower, so wouldn't they all be dispelled? If we're talking multiple 4th+ level spells, I'd say it's either random or the spells are dispelled in the order they were cast. This is assuming the dispeller does have detect magic active so they can...

D&D 5E Gnome Sorceress using Arcane Trickster

If I'm new to the system I build characters based around interesting combinations of class mechanics and then think up a concept to fit that build. Once I feel I've gotten the hang for how different classes work, I'll start making my conceptual based characters.

    D&D 5E Planar Binding

I really like Planar Binding in 5e. The fact that it's not a one-stop-shop for summoning means that binding powerful creatures is now a group activity - an adventure. As an exercise, how many spells are needed to summon and bind a genie?

Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana Presents Alternative Encounter Building Guidelines

At this point I'd rather they stop trying to write a guide for building encounters. All these tables and charts gives the appearance of a system, when in fact there is nothing remotely like a system in place. Just be honest - CR is an occasionally useful guideline for determining the relative...

D&D 5E Do you care about setting "canon"?

For me, what happens in the campaign, and the needs of running a game, always takes precedence over setting canon. DMs should feel free to alter a setting as they see fit for the game they are running. RPG settings are meant to be played in, and the fact that no setting survives contact with...

D&D 5E Out of the Abyss - Cutting out Surface Visit Thoughts

It's doable, no doubt. My group consisted of all Underdark natives, so going to the surface was never a goal. I had Devir play a more active role in feeding the PCs info if they had questions. The party went straight from Neverlight to Gravenhollow with no problems.

D&D 5E Anyone else hoping that the next campaign book WotC releases is 15th to 20th levels?

Very true, it does take time to get to tier 4. However, I see the sentiment expressed that levels 15+ are broken or DMs are intimidated to run at those levels. Those arguments are often brought up as reasons why WotC shouldn't provide more support for high level campaigns. What I'm really...

D&D 5E Anyone else hoping that the next campaign book WotC releases is 15th to 20th levels?

I'll echo this and add that it's disheartening to hear Perkins basically pass the buck onto individual DMs to come up with high level ideas all on their own. Theres a real vicious cycle with high-level play right now: we're given the argument that most campaigns are played at low levels, so...

D&D 5E Monster Manual and Players Hand Book Power Levels

My group uses rolled stats, feats, and MCing - 3e style, they like to call it. We just started CoS without any of those options and I imagine we'll find the game to be quite different. It was pretty obvious to us that using those options would increase the power of the PCs relative to the...

D&D 5E Monster Manual and Players Hand Book Power Levels

i think it'll be a few more months before people get enough actual play experience with STK to see how WotC has addressed any complaints about encounters for higher level characters. My suspicion is not a lot since groups were still playing OotA, and thus first encountering any potential issues...

D&D 5E Monster Manual and Players Hand Book Power Levels

Just got finished running the adventure with significant modifications (both to account for PC capabilities and to fill in the gaps in the latter half), and to run it as-is, I wouldn't recommend going over level 8-10 depending on the party. The party will need to sneak into Menzo, make sketchy...

D&D 5E Monster Manual and Players Hand Book Power Levels

For the record, I never said the game ran poorly at tiers 3 & 4, but that I found myself bored, specifically by the mechanics. Ignoring the encounter building guidelines helps, and may even be necessary for some games, but it'd be nice to not have to ignore them. Just like it'd be nice to not...

D&D 5E Monster Manual and Players Hand Book Power Levels

I just wrapped up my OotA campaign, and I've got to say that my group's experience closely matches CapnZapp's critique. Despite some fun ideas, the second half of that book is pretty bad from an encounter perspective. By the time my group had cleared Gracklestugh, they were stomping all over the...

Sterling Vermin presents 2 new Warlock archetypes: the Cosmic Machine & the Crone

Am I reading this right or does Advanved Override System not cost an action? Otherwise I really like the concepts and execution; one of my players already wants the create Arcane-Iron Man with it.
