Level Up (A5E) Level Up's Future?

Will the core books be going to regular retail channels?

D&D General Zeb Cook and the Evolution from OA to 2e

Fascinating. Any idea/speculation on why most of the sections start with "1. No question"?

WotC Older D&D Books on DMs Guild Now Have A Disclaimer

<edit> Decided it's not wise to say anything about this.

A New D&D Book in 2019: Acquisitions Incorporated Dungeon Manual!

Odd how they announce a new product while carefully avoiding saying a single thing about what it is.

I want faster character creation. Also, I’m a monster.

You are assuming someone with deep familiarity with 5e D&D and point buy, like they've read the PHB front to back 5 times and built a ton of point buy characters. I've played a ton of D&D in various editions but frankly I have no idea what you're talking about because I've never used point buy...

I want faster character creation. Also, I’m a monster.

But you're changing the premise, which is that you just roll in order once and accept what you get. There seems to be this underlying assumption in the thread that you could never play a character with 'bad' stats, so you have to do something to prevent that.

D&D 5E yes, this again: Fighters need more non-combat options

This is the part I disagree with. To my mind, the real world and the imagined game world have the same level of complexity. The players play the game using a very simple model for interacting with the game world. Characters have neither knowledge nor experience of that model, which is an...

D&D 5E yes, this again: Fighters need more non-combat options

How do they know this without inspecting each other's character sheets? I work in software, and I think I'm better at it that many of my peers, but I'm sure many of those same peers think they are better than me. How do we know which is right? It's in fact very hard to know/prove because it's a...

D&D 5E yes, this again: Fighters need more non-combat options

I think this gets metagaming completely backwards. Metagaming is using OOC knowledge for IC decisions. IC the characters due not know the rules of the game they inhabit. The rules of the game are an intentionally hyper-simplified abstraction of their reality. The characters are presumed to live...

D&D 5E Are Gargoyles, Elementals in general and Lycanthropes affected by sleep spell?

Elementals are immune to the Unconscious condition, and thus immune to the Sleep spell.

Brand new DM to 5E and many concerns...

Okay, but then it sounds like you want some other simulationist combat model. No version of D&D has ever been that, though 3e maybe came closest. That has nothing to do with concerns about 5e specifically.

Brand new DM to 5E and many concerns...

You're moving the argument up a level of abstraction, from whether wizards hit harder than fighters, to the entire hit point abstraction and what it represents vis-a-vis finesse weapons vs. strength weapons. The abstractions of D&D are built around combat, not attacking walls. Its obviously...

Brand new DM to 5E and many concerns...

But they don't hit just as hard, because the Wizard isn't trying to hit hard at all. By using finesse, he is trying to slip the dagger into a vulnerable point. Using finesse weapons as an example just confuses the issue of "hitting hard". Anyway a dagger isn't going to be the preferred attack of...

Tales From The Yawning Portal - 7 Classic Dungeons Updated To 5E!

Nothing will be cut from the 4th edition Tomb of Horrors, because this adventure will be based on the 1st edition Tomb of Horrors - which was, I believe, 32 pages, including the illustration book.

    D&D 5E Enhancing "Storm King's Thunder"

Interesting. Adventures can definitely play differently than they read, and I haven't played either. But SKT feels like a mess, especially in terms of character motivation: rushed intro to get characters to 5th level terrible motivation for them to continue from there (trek halfway across the...

    D&D 5E Enhancing "Storm King's Thunder"

Having now browsed through the amazing Out of the Abyss and seeing what a (IMO) really good mega-adventure looks like, I think I'm giving up on trying to make Storm King's Thunder work. I will probably mine it for the Sword Coast adventuring info from Chapter 3 and the individual giant...

I actually prefer to play without maps and just to "theater of the mind". You can still do all the stuff you describe without maps.

    D&D 5E Enhancing "Storm King's Thunder"

Can anyone explain what Klauth's motivation is for helping out the PCs? He just wants someone to take down Imyrith? Shouldn't he be happy about the disorder among the giants?

D&D 5E Thoughts on Lost Lands?

Any thoughts on the 5E Lost Lands stuff that's been released, e.g. Borderland Provinces? I haven't seen any reviews or even content overviews anywhere.
