D&D 5E fifth edition release schedule ... cart before the horse?

Having a DM create a world is absolutely not 'fan fiction'. The release schedule is actually pretty good compared to prior editions... 1e: Monster Manual (1977), PHB (1978), DMG (1979) (yes, the Monster Manual was first, total of 20 months between MM and DMG releases) 2e: PHB (Mar 1989), DMG...

D&D 5E Changing the Skill Check Paradigm

p175 PHB: Variant: Skills with Different Abilities This seems to be to be more of an issue with some DMs and players bringing prior edition preconceptions forward into 5e rather than any issue with 5e itself. I see the same thing happening with Armor Class and Challenge Rating as well. It's...

    D&D 5E Dragon/Dungeon Magazines?

The expeditions are available as PDFs and can be played anywhere, although frankly they aren't really anything to get excited about. Each of them are smaller and less detailed than a single adventure published in Dungeon. There have always been minor rewards available to folks who participated...

    D&D 5E Dragon/Dungeon Magazines?

I really don't get the impression that there is an emphasis on in-store play. I do feel like WotC is trying to do 'better' with it's in-store programs but certainly there's nothing in the currently published offerings that favors organized play over non-organized play.

    D&D 5E Dragon/Dungeon Magazines?

A few thousand forum posters is not a representative sample of the player base. I for one would be extremely sad if Dungeon and Dragon don't return for 5e.

    D&D 5E Bob's HotDQ Issues List (SPOILERS!)

I suspect this has little to do with Winters and Baur and more to do with the fact that other than a 'starter set module' this is the only official adventure available for 5e right now, and it is chock full of errors, omissions, typos, balance issues and outright continuity errors and I am not...

D&D 5E My powergamer players wants to be a bard.

Well, some of the bard's power comes in the form of inspiration dice (or their opposite, cutting words). Depending on the playstyle of your group, these can be more or less powerful. If you are a group where all dice are rolled in the open and you take a little time to 'calculate' the results...

    D&D 5E Does RAW have a place in 5e?

I have a hard time understanding how 'trust' is ever an issue. I guess if you are playing at tournaments or just popping in to random games here and there it might be, but I've never had this be an issue. D&D is defined as a game with an arbitrator, a referee who's decisions are final...

    D&D 5E Magic Item Costs in 5E

Player's Handbook, p144 under 'Selling Treasure': Magic Items. Selling magic items is problematic. Finding someone to buy a potion or a scroll isn’t too hard, but other items are out of the realm of most but the wealthiest nobles. Likewise, aside from a few common magic items, you won’t...

D&D 5E Low level party vs high CR monsters?

I had a group of four sixth-level characters face off against a fire giant. They played it smart and used terrain and ranged attacks to wear it down a bit. When it finally was able to engage, it did knock out the party's cleric/monk in short order. The barbarian raged and was able to tank it...

D&D 5E How We Beat the HD, HotDQ, Spoilers

KarinsDad: I completely disagree with the 'pulled punches' comments as well. The half-dragon doesn't pull any punches, in fact, it specifically states that after his opponent drops, he swings one more time, either killing an NPC combatant outright, or inflicting a death roll failure on a PC...

D&D 5E Monster conversions for The Ghost Tower of Inverness

Interesting comment on the text color issue, I view ENWorld using the default color scheme and I actually copy/pasted from the prior ENWorld post, not another source, but I'll try and make sure that odd color formatting doesn't creep into my posts going forward. You are absolutely correct that...

D&D 3E/3.5 Having a hard time finding conversion kits for monsters for 3.5 and 4e

That's because there aren't any real conversion guides available yet. Sure, some folks have put together some 'finger in the air' 'this seems about right' type guides and tools, frankly, they are just guesses and don't really result in appropriate conversions. We're all hopeful that the DMG...

D&D 5E Monster conversions for The Ghost Tower of Inverness

Giant Toad (6d10 + 6), avg 39 hp, averages to more than double 4d8, avg 18 hp (3E Dire Toad 4 HD) Giant Hyena (6d10 + 12), avg 45 hp, averages to more than double 5d8, avg 22 hp (AD&D Hyaenodon) Giant Octopous (8d10 + 8), avg 52 hp, is quite a bit more than 8d8, avg 36 hp (3E Giant Octopus) So...

    D&D 5E Barbarian 'Unarmored Defense'

If you had started off by stating you were trying to build Drizzt in the first place, you could have saved us all a lot of wasted time in the thread.

D&D 5E Cutting Words and game flow

Actually, to quote the PHB: In other words, it is supposed to be based on either the raw d20 result, or used before damage is rolled. Of course, I've never been so slow at math that there was really any delay between 'making the roll' and 'determining success'. In fact, I generally don't...

    D&D 5E Avoiding the 15m workday.

So you played it smart but the DM didn't pay close attention to the Nothic. Specifically... The nothic is supposed to hide and watch intruders, attempting to scan their minds to discern the party's secrets. It communicates via telepathy, and if detected, it prefers to negotiate and isn't...

    D&D 5E Avoiding the 15m workday.

My understanding is that the pregens are fairly well built. Were you 2nd level for the hideout? Did your party approach via the front-door or take time to interview the townsfolk and thus learn about the secret tunnel entrance? Did you listen at doors and try to scout, use hit-and-run tactics...

    D&D 5E Avoiding the 15m workday.

You should have been 2nd level by the time you encountered the Redbrand Hideout. Not sure if that is the case for your party or not? Bad luck on the dice definitely can make some encounters fairly 'swingy', but decent tactics (stealth, negotiation, etc) will help compensate. I just finished...
