    D&D 5E So who is playing 5E?

I just finished DM'ing Lost Mines and now the party (5th level) is starting to explore a converted Ghost Tower of Inverness. I also run a bi-weekly VTT session that is partway through Episode 3 of HotDQ. About once a month I DM Ghosts of Dragonspear Castle for my kids, although with school...

D&D 5E Lost wagon of Phandelver

Given that it is extremely rare for a battle in 5e to last beyond 10 rounds (ie: 1 minute), it really only takes the party about 15 - 20 minutes of in-game time to clear out the Cragmaw Hideout. If the roads are so highly trafficked and full of bandits that a wagon isn't safe for that period...

D&D 5E HotDQ: Skimpy treasure compared to LMoP

Am I missing something, or is there really no magical treasure given out in HotDQ till Episode 6, at which point the party should be 5th level? In other words, for the portion of the adventure which overlaps Lost Mines of Phandelver (1st - 5th level) there is zero magical treasure, but in the...

D&D 5E Monster conversions for The Ghost Tower of Inverness

I did some further comparisons of hit-dice and hit points of other current CR 1 creatures, and there are plenty such as the Giant Toad (6d10 + 6), Giant Hyena (6d10 + 12), and Giant Octopous (8d10 + 8) with equivalent or higher HP to the Bombardier Beetle. That said, those creatures don't often...

D&D 5E Death strike is grisly

But you don't need surprise to get sneak dmg, and surprise is determined on a character by character basis, so even if you are the only sneaky member of a clanky plate armor based party carrying torches, you can still surprise anything that doesn't succeed on perception vs stealth check...

D&D 5E Monster conversions for The Ghost Tower of Inverness

I wrestled with that a bit, since the 1e version could do it multiple times in a fight but not more than 2/day, I figured an infrequent recharge would model that better. I'm not too pleased with just being once per rest, since in theory it should be able to use it twice in a fight. Also, my...

D&D 5E Monster conversions for The Ghost Tower of Inverness

I didn't check their 3e version. I'll take a closer look tonight. Thanks for the feedback

D&D 5E Monster conversions for The Ghost Tower of Inverness

These are the creatures known to be in the Monster Manual: Bugbear Chief (CR 3) Gelatinous Cube (CR 2) Horned Devil (CR 11) Ogre Mage (Oni, CR 7) Rust Monster (CR 1/2) Weretiger (CR 4) I used the CR from the MM as a guide when creating my versions, but I plan on replacing these monsters with...

D&D 5E Monster conversions for The Ghost Tower of Inverness

5e creatures generally have significantly more HD than 1e creatures. Also, keep in mind the type of dice based on the size of the creature is a factor. In 1e, all creatures used a d8 hit die, in 5e, it ranges from d4 - d20 based on size.

D&D 5E The format of the spell list in the PHB is just plain awful.

I like that the spell details themselves are purely alphabetical. The 2e PHB with divine / arcane split, then grouped by level and finally alphabetized is a bit of a pain. Yes, eventually I memorized what spells where what level, but going back recently and playing a 2e game involved wasting a...

    D&D 5E Disengage

I guess it depends on how you read the sidebar on p190 "Interacting with Objects Around You" It states: "Here are a few examples of the sorts of thing you can do in tandem with your movement and action". I read that as "things you can do in conjunction with movement" (an explicit thing you do...

    D&D 5E Disengage

Bah, you are getting all hung up on the name of the ability and reading into it far more than is intended. It's an action. Actions in 5e imply a LOT of activity. You can fetch a potion from your pack AND administer it as an action. You can stow a weapon while moving, then draw another weapon...

D&D 5E Monster conversions for The Ghost Tower of Inverness

I know some of these will be in the MM, but many of them aren't and my players will be hitting this adventure before my MM arrives, so I went ahead and did a bunch of 1e / DnD Next conversions to 5e monsters. Comments are appreciated! Bombardier Beetle Medium beast, unaligned Armor Class 13...

D&D 5E Possible DM basic rules errata?

The Acolyte is listed as a 1st-level spellcaster, but has 3 1st-level slots. How? The other caster NPCs have the appropriate number of slots according to level and the PHB, including the Priest (5th-level caster, 4/3/2 slots) so it would appear that this is a mistake...

    D&D 5E HTML Character Sheet?

If you grab the character sheets zip from Wizards here: http://dnd.wizards.com/articles/features/character_sheets inside the zip file is a 'form fillable' PDF version, that you can fill out inside Acrobat and the save as an image to post to your website. I am not aware of a true HTML version of...

D&D 5E HotDQ homage to Mere of Dead Men *SPOILERS*

Episode 6: Castle Naerytar takes many cues from the final two adventures in the Mere of Dead Men series of adventures from Dungeon 69 - 73 (considered by many to be the first 'adventure path' for D&D). The castle itself, with its Farseer of Illusk, is detailed in "Mistress on the Mere" by Paul...

D&D 5E Lost Mines *SPOILERS* Thundertree comments...

My players are char-opers... That said, what an analysis of their characters shows to me is that 4d6 drop lowest tends to give arrays that are a bit higher than point buy. Folks around here seem to think point buy is the one-true way, but frankly, even the PHB defaults to 4d6 drop the lowest...

D&D 5E Lost Mines *SPOILERS* Thundertree comments...

I guess I didn't do a close enough reading of the various AC related entries. I'm used to a base AC of 10, with armor / dex / shields etc adding to the base, so when I read Mage Armor, it seemed to suggest that it changed the base AC from 10 to 13, thus unarmored defense would be 13 + dex + wis...

D&D 5E Lost Mines *SPOILERS* Thundertree comments...

I am running Lost Mines for a 4 character party comprised of a Barbarian 3 (AC 21), Ranger 3 (AC 17), Wizard 3 (AC 18) and Monk 1/Cleric 2 (AC 22) These characters are fairly well optimized in my opinion, none of them wear armor, the Wizard uses 4 charges from the Staff of Defense every day to...

D&D 5E Do you like the simplicity of 5E monsters?

If you think 5e monsters are simple, take a look at the 1e monster manual sometime :). If anything 5e seems to be a throwback to 2e monsterous compendium style, with a decent amount of background info and fluff to help the DM be creative in world / encounter building. There's never been much to...
