    D&D 3E/3.5 A New Approach to the Search Skill, D&D 3.5

As DM I use initiative cards that have some basic skills/stats/figures for the PCs, so I know what their skills are. I would run a “room encounter” something like this: First describe what they see when they walk in (I assume a “take 10” on a Spot check, in this case no one was high enough...

    Making adjustments to Rituals?

How about some off-set like burn a healing surge and half the casting time or double the money and half the time or both to cut it to 1/4 the time?

D&D 3E/3.5 4E vs 3E... what are the main changes?

This is just another opinion, so please take it as such. I played 4ed for awhile...how is it different than 3ed? The only way I can describe it is that it plays more like a video game than a roleplaying game. You can only do as many things as you have buttons to make them happen...i.e. it seems...

    Undead PC's

DId anyone suggest the obvious, easy ways to wear them down like positive energy traps, magic items of healing, rangers with undead slaying weapons and negative energy resistance (even a couple of 10th level rangers outfitted like this would be formidable for a couple of undead). Of course they...

    Healing Surges

I personally think there should be some effect, or there is technically no threat. If they still existed you could use fatigued then exhausted...what is in now...weakened? They could just start their day after a long rest with 1 fewer surge for every one they would have lost.

    Proposed fix for spellcaster multiclassing

Let's see...SR works by adding your caster level to a d20 roll to try to break it right? So a 16th level wizard rolls a d20 and adds 16 to the roll to try to break through SR. All we did, and remember COMPLETELY OPTIONAL, is that if all of the classes of a multiclassed character were caster...

    Proposed fix for spellcaster multiclassing

All I can tell you, as I stated before, we have never run into a problem with it; no problem at all, zip, nada. Been doing it for years; working great. It never makes the spell "more powerful" just more challenging to save against, and it NEVER EVER weakens a high level spell, even from saving...

    Proposed fix for spellcaster multiclassing

We did the following from 3.0 through 3.5. The game never derailed and everyone always had a great time. It worked fine from 1st level through 20th level and I lost count of how many characters made that journey through 20 levels. I have posted this in several threads in the past and there were...

    Interpretations/citations for Animate Dead details?

There is a great deal of “only what the DM will allow” for any of this. There are systems that do indeed bind a part of the soul of the animated dead giving them at least rudimentary intelligence (slower, duller version of their former selves) with the body which also tends to make them slightly...

    Minions and hps

Let me start by saying that I have not played a 4ed session and to apologize if this is a bit lengthy. We have used the concept of a “minion” for quite a while now. The details of how they work are as follows (and I will try to use some 4ed ideas/terms as I understand them): The basic...

    Ludicrous Magics

At one time I had created a pantomime magic class where all the spells were completely somatic where the character had to basically act out the effect they were trying to accomplish. Some of it may be what you are looking for...I will see if I can find it. In case I cannot find it here are a...

A lot of creatures, but not really a swarm or mob

Personally I would just use "mook" or "minion" rules, but your method would probably work. I am not sure I understand your damage system. It seems the easiest thing to do would be to roll the regular damage of 1 creature in the group and add 1 point of damage for each additional creature in the...

Proposal -- YAFDHR (Yet Another Falling Damage House Rule)

I actually like your proposals. The only thing that struck me as odd was the type of roll and the changing of it due to size for falling. I realize that you did not ask for examples of what others do for falling damage…but I am going to include it anyway just as an alternative. ;) Falling does...

Proposal -- YAFDHR (Yet Another Falling Damage House Rule)

They are both functional and realistic and both are much more lethal. The drowning damage I will assume is temporary unless they die or gain access to air. The falling damage seems a bit "clunky" to me, but it is understood easily enough. Perhaps you would consider keeping the 1d6/10' fallen but...

Adventuring at a different size scale?

If everything changes in scale then do nothing...i.e. if everything on a planet is tiny just run everything as normal, but feet is centimeters or millimeters. If on the other hand you are saying that for instance only the party has been reduced the "easiest" way to simulate this is by letting...

Save-or-die change to deal half max hps

You can always just make them negative energy damage (not level drain) of some type that does hp damage instead which still may be enough to kill you. For instance the Finger of Death spell could inflict 10 hp of "death" damage per caster level or 10 + 1 hp/caster level with a successful save...

Save-or-die change to deal half max hps

Weakened for 1 round per level of the spell on a save (i.e. -2 on everything). Depends on the spell though.

Save-or-die change to deal half max hps

We have always just had the spell take you to -1 hp so that you are down and dying. Still leaves plenty of room for being saved without making the spell completely useless.

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder Hitpoints and Spell Tables?

Sorry, we've been doing it so long I forget it is not 3.5. We got rid of touch/ranged touch and used Fort/Reflex/Will as static defenses well before 4ed was even announced...thought it made more sense at the time. Well, we just took the existing 1-9th level spells and stretched them out to have...
