Did WotC underestimate the Paizo effect on 4E?

Sorry, I meant the sum of White Wolf's RPG properties. In the past I've seen Exalted, for example, listed separately. Without access to their methodology or actual numbers I'm not buying the results, even with a narrow focus on the hobby channel. I mean, what happens to the Q4 2009 results if...

D&D 3.x gamers who skipped 4e, why are you not "upgrading" to Pathfinder?

3.5e and 2e, if we're talking D&D only. As far as rules go, Pathfinder is a retread of 3.5e. I already have 3.5e and don't much care to pay for it a second time. Other than that I have no issues with Pathfinder as a rule set. As far as setting goes, though, Golarion is the kind of generic...

Did WotC underestimate the Paizo effect on 4E?

But...but...some guy posted a graph on his blog without even labeling the Y axis! Surely this must be evidence of something. They don't seem to be treating all the World of Darkness settings as a single RPG, either. I have a hard time believing that the World of Darkness doesn't outsell...

    Recombining Forums

I've spent a lot less time here since the forums were split. I actually assumed you were trying to tone down the edition wars by funneling people off into their own little worlds, which apparently is not the case. Separate forums are fine when it comes to rules minutiae, but my own preference is...

False dichotomies and other fallacies RPGers use

The "that's a fallacy" fallacy, i.e. calling something a fallacy when it isn't. Example: see above.

    Future of D&D Miniatures

I've never bought minis of any kind for any game, but I would buy these. Well, not orcs, but zombies, demons, etc.

:( Who else is unhappy that XP comments are now showing up in the post?

Ah, but savvy edition warriors know how to phrase their posts so as to plausibly deny their true edition warring intent. The mods, being friendly gents, are then compelled to give them the benefit of the doubt. It's a system that certain members religiously exploit.

:( Who else is unhappy that XP comments are now showing up in the post?

I have resist neg-rep 20! On a serious note: are there plans to factor ignore lists into rep comments? Right now I'm seeing edition war-ish posts, and then right underneath them is a bunch of people I have ignored saying "absolutely!" and "tell 'em Steve-Dave!" and what not.

    STARGATE UNIVERSE # 12: Divided (2)Season 1/2010

Pretty much every significant action Rush has taken is amoral, from gating to Destiny instead of earth to framing Young for murder. And frequently he does these things in the most manipulative way possible, like taking his name out of the lottery in part two of Light or steering someone else...

Gabe of Penny Arcade Slams the OSR

Your points are argumentative, not demonstrative. There's a section in Chaim Perelman's Treatise on Argumentation on quasi-objectivity you should take a look at. Note that the "evidence" you cite isn't actually evidence of anything. There's question-begging, acknowledgment that the necessary...

    STARGATE UNIVERSE # 12: Divided (2)Season 1/2010

"Inconvenient?" I realize that's the word Wray used, and from her limited point of view it may be right, assuming she isn't aware that Rush framed Young for murder. With what we know, though, no, that's not even close to the right word. Rush was not left to die simply because he was...

    Ignore lists

Absolutely. Whether someone ends up on my list or not is a measure of their intellectual honesty in expressing their views, not a measure of the views themselves. For example, I think Dannyalcatraz is pretty much wrong about everything, but I don't ignore him. For the most part he's genuinely...

    Ignore lists

I agree with you, but what does any of this have to do with ignore lists? My ignore list has 55 people on it. I don't hate any of them--on the contrary, I'm utterly indifferent to their existence. I'd have to open the list up to even tell you who was on it. I doubt I post enough to wind up on...

Important: Please Read! Changes Are Coming!

In addition to a percentage, PayPal charges, what, $.30 per transaction? So when someone pays $3 per month rather than $36 for the year, you're losing out on an extra $3.30. With just 1000 subscribers, that's a loss of $3300 a year. Monthly is a great option for the additional subscribers it no...

Pathfinder 1E You're the CEO of PAIZO. Now What?

If I were in charge of Paizo, I'd change the Editorial Intern spot back to a paid position, then sweet-talk some double M.A. post-grad into filling it.

Paul S. Kemp's defense of shared world fiction

Nope, not even arguably. Shakespeare was highly regarded in his lifetime, and Homer was used as a textbook in Greek schools. You're spot on about the credibility of the "yesterday's trash is tomorrow's literature" meme. Pretty much the closest you get are works banned in whole or part for...

    Mage: Ascension vs Awakening

Although for people who don't mind PDFs, Whitewolf has kept most of the old books (1st edition may be an exception) available through places like DriveThru and RPGNow at half the cover price of the hard copies. The Ascension revised core rules also seem to be fairly common used in the low $20 range.

    I'm getting Edition War fatigue

There have been many discussions about how to speed combat up that never devolved into an edition war. Perhaps the key was that the posters acknowledged that they, personally, were not able to execute combat at the pace they would have liked, rather than blaming it all on the game. People tend...

    I'm getting Edition War fatigue

Here's ENWorld's "The Truth About 4th Edition" thread. Here's RPGNet's "The Truth About 4th Edition" thread. The difference is instructive. I used to agree with you, but that's changed in the past year or two. I still think ENWorld has fantastic moderators--some of the best I've seen...
