Good comments all, thanks for the discussion.

    Death and Storytelling

I'll suggest that we name things a same way to avoid confusion in our conversation. Because right now we don't define story characters and people the same way, you and I, unless I misunderstand you. People, to me, are the players sitting around the table playing a game with me. The characters...

    Death and Storytelling

Bedrockgames so I understand that you like to have death be a real threat and let the dice decide when it happens (so do I); but this apart, how do you reconcile death with the story that the now-dead PC was linked to, when it happens? Do you simply let the storyline that was linked to that PC...

    Death and Storytelling

What is your experience in reconciling PC death and storytelling? More detail on my question. RPG's usually have a random aspect to the cooperative storytelling, that regards combat and that determines whether, notably, PC's will survive or die in battle (or in other situations such as traps)...

D&D 5E How can players counter Mass Suggestion?

I agree with Ashrym: this would be two different suggestions. Generally, I think that Suggestions should be worded very simply, and not be over-interpreted, as any other aspect of D&D. 25 years ago, I played in a campaign and my wizard found a ring of wishes. I had a single wish to formulate...

D&D 5E How can players counter Mass Suggestion?

You mention that you don't want to foreshadow the spell and you want to force the PC's to flee the battle against this NPC. You're the DM, you do what you want. But IMO it seems much more interesting to let the battle be decided by actions on the spur of the moment, not by a predetermined...

D&D 5E Do You Think Spare the Dying is a Problem?

    5ekyu: okay thanks, that's what I figured.

D&D 5E Do You Think Spare the Dying is a Problem?

Apologies for this question, that everyone appears to have the answer to: but is Spare the Dying not a (full) action? My PHB lists the casting time as an action, and the errata does not appear to correct this spell (unless it's out of date? I find no more recent errrata than that dated August...

Keep These Tools in Your Real-Life Bag of Holding

Here are a few of those that were not named by the OP that we use: 1) Cards for initiative: we use Tarot cards with cool artwork but any card will do. Each character (PC, NPC, villain) or group of characters (red shirts, minions) is represented by one card. PCs keep the same card each game, so...

    Variant weapon table

Additional ideas: Reach weapons gain Control: any creature that enters your reach must spend an additional 5 foot of movement. All ranged weapons gain Release: if you have no enemy within 5 feet of you at start or round and your ranged weapon is loaded and ready, you gain +5 to your initiative...

    Variant weapon table

To the OP: I like the ideas you propose! I think that the +1 bonuses for picks and flails are particularly fun and flavorful. How about, for fun, expanding a bit? (See below.) The reaping ability is cool, but could it be made a bit more significant? Then, for balance, perhaps add something for...

    Poison needle traps

    This is a fair point.

    Poison needle traps

How, mechanically, would you achieve that? The lock allows the insertion of a key within. If your picks follow the same path, and trigger the same drums, there is no reason that the trap would trigger because the lock is not mechanically triggered any differently than with the key.

    Poison needle traps

D&D 5E books have the following format for a power, trap or other game element. (see any class feature or monster description for example.) 1) give a general description of the game element. For example, the description of the Barbarian's Reckless attack starts with "Starting at 2nd level, you...

Optional Facing Rule: do you use it?

Interesting idea. One thing I particularly like about this, is allowing one free facing change per turn (I assume you mean, per round?). Perhaps creatures could be allowed to change facing during their own turn as much as they want; and then one free facing change per round, out of the...

Optional Facing Rule: do you use it?

That's another fair question. Flanking I've used extensively, not only in RPGs, but I continue to play DDM (Dungeons and Dragons Miniatures skirmish game - the game lives on :) visit the volunteer-operated DDM Guild if this interests any of you, incidentally) and flanking is a big part of that...

Optional Facing Rule: do you use it?

Mouseferatu Facing a single foe: I guess it depends how you reprensent the usage of a reaction: maybe you opened up for an attack. I'm not trying to defend that, just seeing what it means to use a reaction. That said, I do not entirely disagree with you and @aco175, but I guess the facing rules...

Optional Facing Rule: do you use it?

5ekyu: all relevant questions, you have. This is pretty much why I am asking all these questions. I wonder however: what would push a creature to have its back to a wall, instead of moving to attack another creature? I.e. you need to leave that space if forced to; but if you can, you'll stay in...
