Hero Points / Action Points - Yay or Nay?

I like that an AP could be used to offset disadvantage or create advantage.

    Barbarian - Background/Theme or Class?

It certainly could work both ways, right? I think to gain widespread acceptance, the barbarian theme would have to be pretty rich in content.

    Bounded Accuracy L&L

Another implication is using XP to make magic items isn't as big a deal... the PC may be a little behind, but will still be effective when adventuring. (Barring the potential unbalancing effect of the magic items, of course.)

    Bounded Accuracy L&L

True, I don't think the game would ever really support a party with more than a couple of levels difference among the PCs. Unless it is really flat math and I don't think that would be much fun. I don't think I really advocate level penalties for death, but bounded accuracy would handle...

    Bounded Accuracy L&L

One of the implications I love is that the party no longer needs to be all the same level for everybody to contribute. Long ago, we houseruled that everybody gets the same XP so that everybody levels up at the same time. In 2e, we made Resurrection easier to get so you wouldn't lose a level...

I don't understand Gridless combat. HELP!

Great thread topic. I agree with everything Kamikazi said. I'll add few things. 1) Gridless need not equal mapless. Describe the location, be evocative, and mention some details. But, if there is going to be a lot of movement, we always drew the room and gave rough indications of where things...

So the playtest is out: What do you think? The EN World poll!

I'm really liking it. I really feel like "do whatever you want" is front-and-center. Some of it seems a little plain (particularly monsters), but that comes back to the DIY legacy of D&D.

D&D 5E EN World Interview With Mike Mearls, Lead Designer of D&D Next

WotC made a clever move by removing this @GamingTonic's NDA right before the open playtest. It certainly gets me more excited.

    D&D 4E The Indispensable 4e

Paragon paths are cool (and cool for everybody). Caveat: PP bloat just like PrC bloat--too many options. Powers for everybody! Caveat: Too many options for most PCs.

What edition had the ideal version of each class?

True, but I doubt it. I suspect most responders have at least tried 4e. Using the same argument, I bet several haven't played much 1e, either. (Like myself.)

What edition had the ideal version of each class?

Absolutely. In fact, the most effective spell for a wizard to cast was improved invisibility on the rogue. Bonuses to hit, always sneak attack damage, and impossible to hit. Two rogues with II absolutely murderized the final boss in my first 3e campaign. More pointedly, I thought the 3e...

What edition had the ideal version of each class?

What part of the 2e thief would you take? I remember thinking nothing positive of the 2e rogue.

What edition had the ideal version of each class?

Interesting responses. The only clear trend I see is towards the 2e specialty priest cleric. I thought I would see more people favoring the 4e fighter. Though it could be the vagueness of what "ideal" means...

What edition had the ideal version of each class?

I tweeted the following question to Greg Bilsland and he retweeted it for responses. I thought it would be worth asking here, too. Which edition represents the ideal version of each core class. Here is a template: Fighter: Cleric: Rogue: Wizard: And here is my opinion: Fighter: 4th Cleric...

Hillside Games, Asheville: The Unfriendly Local Game Store

How committed are they to the name? I agree that Wyvern's Tale may not sound like a boardgame-focused store.

    The "No-Flame-War" Pledge

I'm in, though this edition war isn't nearly as good as the last edition war.

Fighter vs. Wizard - what's your preferred balance of power?

This sounds so trite, but I really want whatever is most fun. I enjoyed the 3e model and the 4e model. They can both be successful. I lean towards "guys with spikes", who can do certain necessary tasks better than anyone else.

    Ashamed of being a Gamer?

It seems like we've had a thread on this before, except with a poll. But I can't find it. Anybody have better search kung-fu?

    Player's Options: Skills & Powers (a comeback?)

I forgot about C&T. Totally agree on the balance of S&P. I like the character points at each level and how you could go "buy" new attributes that had different values. There were some abilities that you had to "save up" to get and that creates a neat trade-off after a level-up. The race...
