MV: Threats to the Nentir Vale in my hands

I heard that Dythan's Legion has an animated siege tower, what is that creature like? Sounds fascinating!

    Essentials multiclassing playtest?

It gives you absolutely ALL the vampires fun stuff and then you put it on top of the class of your choice (with the other feat to make it even more neat). It's like this is the way it should have been.

MV: Threats to the Nentir Vale in my hands

Calastryx is impressive because it's a very well designed paragon solo. It's exactly what solos in paragon should be. The fell court lurker is in the same bag as some previous creatures like Dust Devil, Jackalwere and Storm Shard. They are just too low level for their mechanics (especially if...

    Essentials multiclassing playtest?

I have to note just how ridiculously awful the Hybrid Binder is. The more I think about the Hybrid Vampire though, the more I think it should never have been a class in itself and should have been done this way from the beginning. It actually feels really thematic this way.

MV: Threats to the Nentir Vale in my hands

Jackalweres are from MM3 actually, not from either Monster Vault product. Also that's only four monsters. For things pre-MM3: Azure Ooze (Dungeon, published around the time that MM1 was around) is absurdly powerful for its level and has a devastating attachment attack. This ensures any PC...

Is the Executioner underpowered, not a striker or both? (or am I missing something?)

Yeah point taken there! The Barbarian in my Eberron game is optimizing for charging, but probably not *that* much :)

    Essentials multiclassing playtest?

The hybrid vampire is one of those cases where the hybrid is going to more than likely be flat out better than the original class.

    Essentials multiclassing playtest?

Both of those are ridiculously awful options. I'm not sure who comes off worse there.

Is the Executioner underpowered, not a striker or both? (or am I missing something?)

He actually has to be able to do so and forced movement and teleportation make this considerably easy for some monsters. In any event given this comparison is from exactly the same game, under exactly the same DM (me), with exactly the same player AND the same PC being changed from...

MV: Threats to the Nentir Vale in my hands

Or compare and contrast 4E Perytons with 4E Jackalweres. Where the Jackalwere can knock a PC unconscious (Deceiver) and the Bravo trivially finish off any character with a coup de grace crit. There are a few heroic tier monsters that can easily kill a PC now at low levels. You act like these...

MV: Threats to the Nentir Vale in my hands

Wow, I was really hoping that would be an ancient dragon. I can't say I'm enthused with another dragon that is a MV version + couple of extra powers. Edit: Is the solo treant at least pretty cool?

MV: Threats to the Nentir Vale in my hands

What is the 20th level monster in the book? How is Bitterfang the Ancient White dragon? Significantly different from the original MV?

MV: Threats to the Nentir Vale in my hands

Wow. Just... Wow. I have no idea what to say. Edit: I am completely speechless. I really didn't expect that whatsoever. Edit2: So much for the "paragon tier" part of the book.... Edit3: You are serious right? You're not just yanking my chain?

Is the Executioner underpowered, not a striker or both? (or am I missing something?)

Main problem with the executioner is scaling, like many essentials classes despite assassin's strike looking impressive dice wise it starts to fall behind at paragon/epic. It does work a lot better than the OAssassin, but I've used the analogy before but that's like saying a heavyweight boxer...

MV: Threats to the Nentir Vale in my hands

Actually this doesn't indicate any change in design direction: Perytons have ALWAYS been able to do this. It's a core part of their fluff that they obsess over gaining "The perfect shadow" and so mercilessly attack (And kill) downed opponents. I'm 100% certain that whoever designed the Peryton...

    D&D 4E Do you mix'n'match Essentials with standard 4e?

I don't really restrict anything in the entire system actually. My personal preferences on if I like certain classes or not shouldn't have a bearing on if my players play it. The only class I will actively encourage a PC not to play is the Binder: Because it's literally a crappy Warlock and does...

MV: Threats to the Nentir Vale in my hands

Wow, nothing in epic whatsoever. Minding I totally saw that coming so there is no point complaining about it. Either way the thing that interests me most is I am wondering if there is any published changes to the maths of monsters in the book. The three-headed dragon for example has 120 HP...

    Cracks in the Crimson Cage

Yeah, I am personally going to change variable resistance to apply immediately and reduce damage, then provide damage resistance equal to the amount of damage reduced. This means that those features that ignore damage resistance fail to function (because the initial DR is not resistance, it's a...

Dear bloody god: Calystrx (Threats to Nentir Vale Preview)

It's been this way since Monster Manual 3 actually. Solos have sufficient bite they are absolutely terrifying to anyone, even a reasonably optimized party.

    Cracks in the Crimson Cage

It's useless for three reasons: 1) It's applied after the damage that triggered it, meaning it can't be used on the damage type that hit it in the first place. 2) Most PCs who are specialists just ignore resistance anyway. 3) Many PCs use energy types that it can't cover, such as radiant and...
