    will 4.0 succeed?

I think D&D 4E will be a commercial success. It will also make many gamers happy. Will it draw new players to the game? I doubt it. Will it satisfy Hasbro's bottom line? Crystal Ball cloudy on this one.

    Excerpt: the quest's the thing

I would so unhappy at this game table! You're entitled to do this, but that's typically the kind of railroading I hate when playing the game. I too dislike the "yellow brick road" aspect the Quests in 4E.

    D&D 5E Ruminations on 5E (serious)

Considering that 4E historically is Advanced Dungeons & Dragons (D&D -> AD&D -> AD&D2 -> 3E -> 4E), I would prefer a toned down, yet even more streamlined/simplified version of 4E, a real basic D&D (rather than a box of minis with amputated rules, that is) of sorts, personally.

Whining on the boards and rule zero

You can talk about perceived flaws in the design of the Paladin or Winterhaven without being "whining". The "what" is not really what matters. It's the "how". How people talk about these perceived flaws, and how readers choose to interpret their posts. There is some bad blood on all sides of...

Why does WotC have to apologize for making money?

I think people on all sides of the arguments need to clearly separate discussions about the mechanics and the game itself from topics pertaining to the actual manner (PR, marketing) and reasons for the game to be marketed. If these two issues were kept clearly separated, a lot of the...

GMs: What lessons have you learned from playing/other GMs?

Why are you not? (i.e. what makes you think you're not as good as Nick is?)

GMs: What lessons have you learned from playing/other GMs?

One more, important: 4/ Unlearn gaming stereotypes. If you think in terms of "munchkins", "powergamers", "drama-queens", and God knows what else, this does NOT serve your skill at DMing, EVER. If you are thinking in such terms, you must unlearn what you have learned, in Yoda's terms. Really.

GMs: What lessons have you learned from playing/other GMs?

I can't really pinpoint any particular event or game I witnessed. I can repeat, however, a few of the basic principles of DMing that I've learned from others, through observation or otherwise: 1/ The rules are your servant, not your master. Rules hamper fun? Trust your ruling. Throw the rules...

Monte Cook's Book of Experimental Might II: Bloody, Bold, and Resolute

I agree. It is also a great boon for players, who really see their capacities evolve level-by-level. It matches the 20-level spell progression extremely well, and makes the whole feel more coherent, with less sub-systems. "A spell level is a character level, "level" means the same. Each level...

Monte Cook's Book of Experimental Might II: Bloody, Bold, and Resolute

That's right. Careful though: these are branded as "WARNING: potentially game breaking" in the sourcebook itself. These are certainly interesting ideas, and they may work great at a particular game table, but one should be very aware of the game-altering properties of such options. Overall...
