    Baby-Faced Jan 2018 Edition!!

Different strokes for different folks. Some people really love RP1, and some people don't.

    Baby-Faced Jan 2018 Edition!!

Drop me a message next time; we'll meet up & I'll buy you a drink. Or a book. As long as it's no more than the price of a drink.

    Baby-Faced Jan 2018 Edition!!

I'm in the same demographic, but...RP1 did nothing for me. I couldn't help but compare it to Snowcrash, and RP1 does not do well by that metric. (I have the same issue with Old Man's War and The Forever War. Haldeman by a light year.)

    Baby-Faced Jan 2018 Edition!!

Ithaca NY has a used book sale twice a year, put on by the Friends of the Tompkins County Library Association. Three 3-day weekends, price drops every day. Apparently one of the biggest in the country. Not sure how they do it, but it's a full warehouse every time. So I don't do used bookstores...

    Baby-Faced Jan 2018 Edition!!

Reading A War in Crimson Embers, by Alex Marshall. Book 3 of the Crimson Empire trilogy. Really, really like this series. It's a fun read & I'm amusing myself by seeing it as a reskinned D&D campaign. Very much in the Joe Abercrombie vein. Up next will be the rest of the Christmas haul -...

What are you reading? All New / All Improved Dec 2017 Edition.

I reread Snowcrash a few years ago and thought it had actually aged pretty well. I don't recall any glaring issues with When Gravity Fails. The sequels are a little harder to get a hold of. Recommendation: River of Gods, by Ian McDonald. Also Cyberbad Days (same author, same world). For a REAL...

What are you reading? All New / All Improved Dec 2017 Edition.

I just finished The Deed of Paksenarrion, and just started Oath of Fealty, the first of the sequel series Ms Moon recently wrote. Feeling stressed, so decided to go old school. Recommendation: Wolf Hall, by Hilary Mantel. Goes particularly well with any of the Henry VIII biographies by Alison Weir.

What are you reading? All New / All Improved Dec 2017 Edition.

I think When Gravity Fails is excellent. The later books don't quite live up to it, but I think it stands up really well on its own.

Over Half Of New D&D Players Got Into Game From Watching Online Play

As someone who got into gaming years before Youtube (or the internet....)...this reminds me of the fact that I spent years reading about D&D before I played it. I went from 1e to 2e without ever playing a game. Admittedly I did a lot of "development" and map-drawing, but...there might be...

What are you reading? - October 2017

I've been travelling a lot, and alternate between burning through books and reading 20 pages in a week. I'll have to figure out what else I've read this month, but have read two post-end-of-the-world books this weekend - Go-Go Girls of the Apocalypse, and A World Made By Hand. The latter is...

What are you reading? - October 2017

Never Let Me Go messed with my head for months. Recommended.

What are you reading - Sep 2017

I read The Girl With All the Gifts again, and a few other books I can't recall right now, and currently finishing up Seveneves by Neal Stephenson. Like Cryptonomicon, it's just kinda ambling along. Stephenson does a LOT of worldbuilding, but it's like he's just written the footnotes into the...

What are you reading - Sep 2017

Just a nitpick - Felix Castor isn't from the Lucifer series. It's completely stand-alone, and an excellent series. M R Carey is easily one of my favorite authors right now.

What are you reading - Sep 2017

It just didn't sing to me. I enjoyed it, but...I dunno. I read The Boy on the Bridge immediately thereafter and that dragged me right in, no problems (I bloody well cheered at the end too!) Ditto.

The Stone Sky and The Boy On The Bridge are both set to be delivered tomorrow. I, of course, will be on my way to Connecticut for two days. <sigh>

What are you reading? (August 2017)

I've been moving and travelling for work, so everything is topsy-turvy. I did read High Fidelity (quite good), the Shades of Magic series by VE Schwab (A Darker Shade of Magic/A Gatherings of Shadows/A Conjuring of Light), and Fellside by M R Carey. Moved on to Years best Science Fiction edited...

What are you reading [Jul 2017]?

CJ Cherryh's SF, particularly the Alliance/Union Universe books, are some of my favorites. BUT she can be a hard writer to read. She doesn't do a lot of explanation - you keep up or get out - and her writing style is...I dunno. Very psychological. And nobody ever gets a proper night's sleep in...

What are you reading [Jun 2017]?

Not sure I've read the novella. Where did you find it? These are the books that got me started on NK Jemisin. Personally, the bit with the goddess of hunger and her pure indignation when confronted with the hole of nothing was just pure fun. :)
