What are you reading in 2024?

Second this. I also thought the Dee books were almost all extremely suitable to be translated into D&D adventures.

Those too. Not every story has giant enigmatic architecture, but enough do.

What are you reading in 2024?

If you like fantasy, you might try Martha Wells's newest book. Name escapes me at the moment. She loves her mysterious megastructures.

Yeah, they're just...not that interesting. Not bad, but not a lot of emotional involvement.

What are you reading in 2024?

I couldn't sleep last night, and read much of Cold Welcome, by Elizabeth Moon (of Paksenarrion fame). Finished it today (I wrote off today and just stayed home). I wasn't sure if I'd read it before, but I definitely have. It...was fine, I guess. I finished it (again). Very much the whole "genius...

Lamb is also amazingly fantastic, both for its humor and its...perspective? On Christianity? If a church picked up that as its gospel, I'd join.

What are you reading in 2024?

Bridge of Birds is one of my three "list-test" books. If a Fantasy "Best of" list doesn't include at least one of the three, it's not a good list. (Yes, this is very subjective; yes I'm a 50+ white guy who grew up reading fantasy in the 80s; no this isn't a perfect system; no obviously it...

The OGL -- Just What's Going On?

I'll be honest, I forgot all about Glory of the Giants. I thought they'd been done in Volo's Guide to Monsters.

The OGL -- Just What's Going On?

I see it like getting a cola. Coca-cola is the clear market leader, but Pepsi-cola does pretty well and I like it fine. And then there are all the little house brands that someone loves. And at the end of the day, I'm only there for the caffeine anyway. :) The best way, though, is to play what...

The OGL -- Just What's Going On?

I didn't say it was good. I liked it well enough, but the pickings were slim.

The OGL -- Just What's Going On?

I don't at all disagree with what you're saying, and honestly I agree that's likely a large component of WotC's motivation, but...it's baffling. They could, with VERY little effort, put out a single hardback "Basic D&D" book that was functional as a largely complete game; be a gateway to 5e...

The OGL -- Just What's Going On?

So, I by no means said that Monte was the only person doing this. I didn't think it was particularly common, but I guess it depends on who you follow. I don't buy Goodman Games stuff, generally, and I've only got the Basic Rules Tome of OSE, which I find to be an oddly soulless reformatting of...

The OGL -- Just What's Going On?

The only people that can do that, I believe are WotC, who absolutely don't care and won't spend a dime on it. There's no non-WotC enforcement or supervisory agency. It's possible if X used material from Y that Y could sue X for not following the OGL, but that requires $$$.

The OGL -- Just What's Going On?

I certainly griped about it. KP and Green Ronin are both generally quite good. Yeah, it is, but there's no enforcement mechanism among 3rd party publishers beyond the market.

The OGL -- Just What's Going On?

So, I haven't searched back to find out what this continues from, but I'm 99% certain I know exactly what you're talking about, because that company and person has been doing that for ages and I find it reprehensible. Your letter looks very similar to the one I got back in 200? when I queried...

What are you reading in 2024?

Honestly, 90% of my actual reading these days is old D&D stuff. This past year or so has been...stressful for me mentally (just an accumulation of stuff, and I'm fortunate in that I've been able to almost literally step away from it in the past month or so without burning down bridges, though I...

What are you reading in 2024?

I didn't read anything for a few weeks because I'm still finding it hard to get into reading anything "new". That said, I picked up Saevus Corax Deals With the Dead, by KJ Parker, last week and blew through it, so I grabbed the rest of the trilogy, read those, and then Anno Dracula 1999...

What are you reading in 2024?

As others have noted, he did that frequently. And no, plotting wasn't a thing he cared about. But my gods, the writing. The little vignettes. The way he turned a phrase or set a scene. The detail he could lay in. Apparently Poodle Springs, his last, unfinished work, was a hot mess of WTF and...

My GF loves those. My cousin also. I'm thinking I should read them.
