What are you reading [Jan 2017]?

    Wool is pretty amazing.

What are you reading [Jan 2017]?

I finished Beasts, by John Crowley. Not a bad book, but it never really captured me. I've been reading it on and off for months, and it's not a long book.... Also read Caliban's War, and have started Abbadon's Gate. I started The Doll's House, by MJ Arlidge, and am not going to finish it. It's...

What are you reading [Jan 2017]?

It's similar to the Ready Player One divide. I found Old Man's War pretty derivative of, and inferior to, The Forever War. The same applies to Ready Player One and Snowcrash. I might reread Old Man's War someday, but I got rid of my copy so it's not going to happen for a while.

    Opinion is divided.

What are you reading [Jan 2017]?

I liked Under Heaven, but better than Tigana? No way. In other news, I just started Nemesis Games. I thought I'd read it already from the Library, but apparently that was Cibola Burn. Edit: Finished Nemesis Games, and dug out the first 3 books from storage. I'll probably skip Leviathan's Wake...

What are you reading [Jan 2017]?

It was a good Christmas. I've read: Halfway Home and The Hurricane, both by Hugh Howey; The Peripheral, by William Gibson (I forget how good he is); Agatha H And The Airship City, by Phil & Kaja Foglio (very enjoyable); The Three-Body Problem, by Cixin Liu (weird; reserving judgement on it)...

[Dec 2016] What Are You Reading?

Reading the Felix Castor series of novels by Mike Carey. Very well done; I don't usually binge-read but I'm working on the fourth (and last, I think) one right now. I've also read Feed.

[Oct 2016] What Are You Reading?

Been awhile since I posted. Currently reading The Years Best SF: 32nd Annual Collection. Before that was Poseidon's Wake, by Alastair Reynolds; Munster's Case, by Hakan Nesser; and The Oregon Trail, by Rinker Buck. Previous to those (and probably in September): Tau Zero (Poul Anderson); Gorky...

VILLAINS & VIGILANTES Legal Dispute Settled

No, the opposite. They regained ownership of their game from someone that didn't want to publish it. But he still owns the name of the game (which is a weird arrangement, but whatever).

    Rogue One trailer

I really like the feel of this trailer for some reason. It clicks.

[April 2016 Edition] What Are You Reading?

OK, so I read Psychoshop, by Alfred Bester and Roger Zelazny (apparently Z was asked to finish it after B died). It's fine but not memorable. 3/5. Meant to start a mystery/thriller since I haven't read one in a while, but grabbed A Song for Arbonne instead. In the mood for something more...

We're All Gamers Together: Why Harassment Has To Stop

[April 2016 Edition] What Are You Reading?

I finally finished Cryptonomicon. It's well-written, and I wasn't ever bored, but I wasn't ever excited either. Overall positive, but not an experience I'm interested in repeating. 4/5 Also (and kudos to Stephenson for making me care) I'm really pissed we don't find out what happens to Glory...

[March 2016]: What are you reading?

I'm...I dunno. A third of the way through Cryptonomicon? It's not exactly a slog, but it's not gripping me and so far I've got absolutely no idea what the plot is. We just seem to be meandering along. I'm afraid if I put it down I won't ever pick it back up, so I'm plugging along, but...sheesh...

[March 2016]: What are you reading?

I think I liked City of Blades better than Stairs, but both were really good. They're related but not direct sequels (different protagonist), and there is stuff in Stairs that would've made Blades a little clearer had I read them in the proper order. On a different note, I picked up Broken Time...

[March 2016]: What are you reading?

Finished Blue Remembered Earth (4/5) and Brideshead Revisited (5/5). Not sure Brideshead was a smart move considering my mood and the state of my life, but it's beautifully done and I can pick up something new. I've got Cryptonomicon on the shelf, so maybe that?

D&D 5E Please understand your spells

I find your specificity both amusing and, as I thought about it, depressing. I don't need the feels, man.

D&D 5E Please understand your spells

That's an interesting "try". If you've memorized every spell in the PHB, every magic item, every psionic effect, and every maneuver, oath, feat, and what-have-you, then my hat's off to you. I haven't and I'm not going to. If that means I'm not a great DM in your eyes, I'll be consoled by the...

D&D 5E Please understand your spells

It doesn't bog down my combat noticeably, and I don't spend 5 minutes on it. I ask questions and get things resolved quickly. If they aren't prepared, the next person can go while person A gets their :):):):) together. Or someone gets volunteered to helps Person A get their :):):):) together. At...
