Depends on the kind of encounter. If it's not something they have to kill, an hour's grace could well end the fight. Example from one of my own campaigns was when the PCs were on a riverboat and encountered a giant water serpent (I forget the specifics of exactly what kind of creature it was)...

Heh. We actually stopped using that rule a few sessions after we started, in part because we had one PC drop to 0 something like four times in one encounter. :D (The other reason, I confess, is that we just tended to forget to apply it. But I still like it in theory...)

I'm partial to just imposing exhaustion and/or a lingering wound (as per the DMG) when characters drop to 0 hit points, for campaigns where overnight healing is inappropriate.

To me--and I imagine to others--the idea of some spell levels scaling automatically while others do not is far more inelegant and intrusive than what we have. Even if I agreed that it felt "off" to have cantrips do more damage than some low level spells at higher levels, this particular solution...

I've both played and run in games where some of those races or some of those classes weren't allowed. Nothing is "mandated," AFAIAC.

That really depends on your definition of "many." The percentage of authors who make a living off e-books (or books at all) is tiny. There's a reason most authors have non-writing jobs, or are married to someone who does. The number who actually get rich is a fraction of a fraction of a percent.
