DMs! Have you ever had a “boss encounter” turn into a cakewalk? What happened?

This whole side-tangent is the meta-level out-of-game equivalent to "white room" mechanical balance discussions. It completely omits something so vital as to be an exercise in futility: specifically, the individual group. People argue over whether it's better "for the game" or "for the players"...

DMs! Have you ever had a “boss encounter” turn into a cakewalk? What happened?

They also had an encounter in which they transformed... Uh, again I forget the exact opponent, but some sort of giant. Anyway, they polymorphed it into a chicken. Then they used several castings of stone shape to open up a tiny compartment deep in the wall of a nearby cave, put the chicken in...

DMs! Have you ever had a “boss encounter” turn into a cakewalk? What happened?

Depends on the kind of encounter. If it's not something they have to kill, an hour's grace could well end the fight. Example from one of my own campaigns was when the PCs were on a riverboat and encountered a giant water serpent (I forget the specifics of exactly what kind of creature it was)...

    What would a slaad say?

That the internet is actually occupied almost entirely by beings of pure chaos, violence, and libido cannot possibly come as grand revelation to anyone at this point. :p

    What would a slaad say?

Just from reading this so far, I feel like a more philosophically-minded slaad really out to sound like Inspirobot...

    Most frustrating quirk of 5E?

Heh. We actually stopped using that rule a few sessions after we started, in part because we had one PC drop to 0 something like four times in one encounter. :D (The other reason, I confess, is that we just tended to forget to apply it. But I still like it in theory...)

    Most frustrating quirk of 5E?

I'm partial to just imposing exhaustion and/or a lingering wound (as per the DMG) when characters drop to 0 hit points, for campaigns where overnight healing is inappropriate.

    Making a Planeswalker

Yeah, "Planeswalker" shouldn't be a class at all. They are too disparate in terms of actual abilities, and in terms of power level. You can have magic-using Planeswalkers and martial Planeswalkers... Heck, Nicol Bolas, one of the multiverse's strongest dragons, is a Planeswalker. Frankly, the...

    Cantrip Auto-Scaling - A 5e Critique

I'd just like to point out something else. Cantrips are a limited resource. In some ways, even more so than spells. They're just limited on a different scale, and the choices are made at a different time. Wizards gain two new spells automatically every level, and can potentially gain a lot...

    Cantrip Auto-Scaling - A 5e Critique

You mean the same way cantrips--which have their own feature name, are in the PHB, and we've been playing with for years--seem perfectly elegant to you now? :p

    Cantrip Auto-Scaling - A 5e Critique

To me--and I imagine to others--the idea of some spell levels scaling automatically while others do not is far more inelegant and intrusive than what we have. Even if I agreed that it felt "off" to have cantrips do more damage than some low level spells at higher levels, this particular solution...

Skills used by players on other players.

I agree. But out-of-game/mechanical considerations that don't have a direct in-character equivalent aren't something an adventurer should be taking into account. Also, the way the comment was phrased was pretty clearly an out-of-character motivation and decision. The only time I'm really okay...

Skills used by players on other players.

Well, now I'm torn. On the one hand, AFAIAC, it is never, ever okay to tell a player how their character must react to something unless magic is involved. On the other, I have zero use for anyone who replies to an in-character argument, or makes an in-character decision, based on...

Nentir Vale Coming to Dungeons and Dragons

Whereas I view the deva as a missed opportunity, precisely because they didn't completely replace the aasimar. The deva are far, far more interesting, and I was deeply disappointed to find out that they didn't exist* in 5E. *Yes, there are deva in 5E, but they're the old "lesser cousins to...

Campaign Settings and DM Strictures, the POLL

I've both played and run in games where some of those races or some of those classes weren't allowed. Nothing is "mandated," AFAIAC.

Nentir Vale Coming to Dungeons and Dragons

I really, really love the fact that people still remember that article so fondly. It's one of the ones I'm the most proud of. :D But I do have to say... At the risk of sounding a bit jerky, I'm delighted to hear this. I certainly didn't have any ulterior motive for including exarchs of two...

4.33 Years in: What Now for 5E? (and have we reached "Peak Edition?")

That really depends on your definition of "many." The percentage of authors who make a living off e-books (or books at all) is tiny. There's a reason most authors have non-writing jobs, or are married to someone who does. The number who actually get rich is a fraction of a fraction of a percent.

Has WotC saturated the published adventure market or are the two latest adventures not very popular?

This is a perfectly valid position--I say that in advance because I don't want you to think this is directed at you, personally :) --but a lot of people in this community are going to wind up disappointed if this turns out to be a common viewpoint. A lot of people have been complaining that...

You want an example of where your argument falls apart at best, or is dishonest at worst? It's this right here. Nobody is "more offended" at what WW wrote than they are the actual persecution, and claiming that this is the case is absolutely disgusting. It's precisely because we're horrified...
