D&D (2024) How long should a Short rest be in 5E(2024)?

Indeed. Which makes a lot of sense, except that 5e then makes the odd assumption that characters will face two encounters between short rests (and then introduces a whole bunch of "you can use this X times" short rest powers to compensate). Way back in the days of the BECMI Red Box, the...

D&D (2024) How long should a Short rest be in 5E(2024)?

Undefined. Or, more accurately, defined by the adventure conditions and/or the DM. I don't think there needs to be a one size fits all answer to this.

D&D 5E Dice Rolling for beginning ability scores...redux

That's all really interesting stuff - thanks for the analysis and so much detail!

D&D 5E Dice Rolling for beginning ability scores...redux

Roll 6d6-drop-lowest-3 once, 5d6-drop-lowest-2 once, and then 4d6-drop-lowest for the other four stats. (My understanding is that on average adding a dice is reasonably equivalent to a +1 bonus, so that's the equivalent of a +2 and a +1. Obviously, that rule of thumb doesn't work if you keep...

D&D 5E Dice Rolling for beginning ability scores...redux

There's a lot of truth in that. That said, I'm surprised nobody has taken the risk on rolling - neither point buy nor array allows for the possibility of starting with an 18, so I'd have thought someone might go for it.

D&D 5E Dice Rolling for beginning ability scores...redux

These days I allow each player to make the choice for themselves. Either they use point buy (which is slightly different from the PHB, because the racial ASIs are built in), or a standard array (again, slightly different from the PHB), or random roll (using 6d6 keep 3 once, 5d6 keep 3 once, and...

    How I'd fix Star Wars

Either that or do a full-on gender-swapped reboot of Episode IV. It would probably be worth it just to see some heads explode. But if doing that, they should get on with it - Helen Mirren is currently perfect for Jane Kenobi, but that won't always be the case.

    How I'd fix Star Wars

I'd be inclined to time jump a few centuries forward in time - far enough that the Skywalker name is still known, but the details have become hazy. Drop in a line or two somewhere along the road about the ship designs being "timeless classics", or whatever, and keep on using X-wings and TIEs...

Plot help for a Star Wars campaign wanted

The Sith Lord is Palpatine. It's clones all the way down. More seriously, I'm inclined to suggest that the secret needs to be something that they'll want to keep and use themselves, but that has a horrible price - perhaps it is the classic Sith secret to preventing someone from dying (at the...

D&D 5E What houserules do we assume is common in the community?

Yep, there was a good long time I thought that existed. Likewise auto-failure/success on saving throws with a 1/20.

D&D 5E What houserules do we assume is common in the community?

Players are free to pitch whatever house rules (or other preferences) they want - I'm happy to acquire good ideas from any source. That said, I reserve the right to make the final decision. If a player chooses therefore to go elsewhere, that's fine. Meh. Their table; their rules. (I might be...

    TSR NuTSR Declares Bankruptcy

I would assume WotC might have an interest. Mostly to lock it in a vault and make sure it never sees the light of day again, with a side order of making sure they (and not someone else) is in control. Though I doubt they'd pay for it.

Star Wars: Ahsoka - Official Teaser Trailer

I don't think there has been anything on Disney+ that I've been as eager to see as this. The final season of "Clone Wars", maybe, but that's it.

D&D General Do We Really Need Multiclassing?

5e certainly doesn't need multiclassing - I've never allowed it, and after several campaigns have never noticed a lack. That said, I'm generally not in favour of removing options. In theory, there should be better ways to handle such hybrid classes (add a few more classes to fill in some gaps...

D&D Movie/TV Should the D&D Movie Been Serious or Not Called D&D?

I'm sorry, but that's the same as the old "4e shouldn't have been called D&D" argument. Firstly, if it hadn't, there is no way it would have done anywhere near as well. Secondly, more importantly, if it hadn't been called D&D it wouldn't have been made. I disagree. The cinema seems replete...
