Star Wars The Most Overused Tropes?

A lot of this is perception. Criticism takes more words than adulation. Multiply that by millions of fans online, all of whom mostly like Star Wars but who each have their one thing that they dislike, and the negativity just blows up massively. (Which isn't to say there aren't toxic people out...

D&D General How do people play so quickly? (# of sessions per adventure?)

At the moment we have 1-hour sessions almost weekly. That means that things are really stripped down to basics, and it still takes us forever to get through anything. :) My preference would definitely be for longer sessions - I think 3-4 hours is probably the best that I've found. And I'd also...

D&D 1E Should Gold Dragons always be LG and Black Dragons always be CE?

1st Ed has the distinction of being one of very few versions of the game I've never run (0e and B/X being the others). However, in every edition I have run there have been some exceptions to stated alignments. "Always" doesn't quite mean always. :)

D&D (2024) Jeremy Crawford: “We are releasing new editions of the books”

I'm not sure that's true - at least some of Holmes, B/X, and BECMI would count. And I'm reasonably sure 1st Ed is also in that group. The first rules revision by WotC perhaps.

D&D (2024) Jeremy Crawford: “We are releasing new editions of the books”

I can entirely understand why they went with that name. It's just not technically correct. And as Futurama reminds us, that's the best kind of correct. :)

D&D (2024) Jeremy Crawford: “We are releasing new editions of the books”

That's your prerogative, of course. However, it's worth noting that the "half edition" nomenclature was itself a gimmick used to avoid the stigma of releasing a new edition so soon after 3e launched. Not to mention that "3e" itself is something of a nonsense - there were at least four previous...

D&D (2024) Searching and Safely Triggering Traps and Secret Doors

IMO... Investigation should go away. Roll everything into Perception. However, each time a trap/secret door/whatever is present in an adventure, it should include a statement about what the markers are - the visible (audible, etc) clues that indicate that it is there, and also how these can be...

    Forgotten Realms edition question

I'd recommend either the original Grey Box or the 3e FRCS, depending on how extensive you would prefer your campaign material (the former is lighter, the latter much more dense; neither is close to exhaustive). Personally, I'd actively avoid anything beyond those two; the relative lack of...

D&D 5E Rime of the Frostmaiden with a twist of Ravenloft

That would make sense. Perhaps it's not actually Auril but rather a leftover avatar/aspect/whatever that doesn't realise its status?

D&D General Has anyone run a PHB only table?

Sure. It runs absolutely fine. There are two issues you're likely to face: firstly, there are some players who absolutely must build their characters with something that is not in the PHB, and will fight you every step of the way. (There are also a very small minority of players who will find...

D&D (2024) What would change for you if Wizards started calling it 6E?

Very little. It would potentially allow them to make some changes that are currently blocked by the need to be compatible, which could be a good thing. (But then, it could also mean they make changes they really shouldn't.)

D&D (2024) How would you change skills in 5.5e

I've thought of another thing I'd change, although not directly related to skills (I'd apply it to everything, except maybe saves): if you're rolling for something that you're not proficient in, the maximum bonus you can apply is your proficiency bonus. So there's a fairly tight limit to what an...

D&D (2024) How would you change skills in 5.5e

The problem is that either the Face has all the skills, and so is rolling Cha + Prof for everything, generally against the same DC (in which case the chosen approach becomes irrelevant), or they only have one and so use that one approach for everything. IMO it would be better to have one skill...

What are the greatest published adventures you've run?

If you're asking for those published adventures that I've run that I think are greatest, I'd say "Ravenloft" (the original), "Sunless Citadel", "The Shackled City", "The Shattered Circle", and "Lost Mine of Phandelver". If you're asking which adventures that are widely considered great that...

D&D 5E Glory of the Giants, Book of Many Things and the Phandelver Campaign have all been delayed, no new 5e content until mid-August.

It's all 4e's fault. By dropping the last vestiges of mechanical impact for alignment they robbed internet flame wars of all of their intensity. Since then it has been literally impossible for anyone to really argue about D&D.

D&D General Which non-D&D races would you like to see in D&D?

Yeah. Before the changes in Tasha's, that was essentially my position: that settings should ideally support their own set of thematically-appropriate races, and only those races. Which might or might not include any of the PHB options.

D&D (2024) How would you change skills in 5.5e

I mostly agree, except for one detail: if something should be in the DMG but isn't, that's a failure of the DMG. If something is in the DMG but goes unnoticed because I haven't bothered read it, that's on me.

D&D General Which non-D&D races would you like to see in D&D?

Sure, that would work. But that was just an example - I don't have any particular burning need to play a Witcher (which you can probably do with a Human Hexblade Warlock and the right choice of powers anyway). Rather, it was "divorce species from mechanics" that I was advocating.

D&D General Which non-D&D races would you like to see in D&D?

I'm finding it hard to come up with anything that I can't model by reskinning an existing species. I daresay there's something. (I'm quite fond of the Perdido Street Station Khepri. They might count.) That said, these days I'm leaning towards the view that species might be better treated as a...

Which of these is the optimal distance of measurement for your TTRPG enjoyment?

Can't say I'm bothered either way: feet, meters, or squares all work for me. I tend to favour feet or meters for aesthetic reasons, but I have found that quite often some players aren't comfortable with either feet or meters, so I end up doing at least some conversion with either of those.
