    hit dice and hit points

Actually yes you are right, I rem the 2e fighter only missing on a 1, and so on. So to summarise (I think) 1e, 2e, 3e, 4e all had high to hit increases. But 3e and 4e also had AC increases (monsters at least), which moderated those hit rates. In comparison 1e and 2e ended up hitting a lot...

    D&D 5E Using 3d6 for skill checks

I quite like this idea. Another alternative, which we are currently using, is getting rid of DCs altogether, and just making all skill/ability checks roll equal or under, ala OSR. So if you have an 18 Str fighter bashing down a door, he has a very very good chance of doing it, and an 8 Str guy...

D&D 5E Curse of Strahd Tarokka Deck

Just did a google search for images of it - is it black and white only? Shame, would have liked to see some colour... still, perhaps it is fine as is? What is on the back of the cards?

    hit dice and hit points

Yes 3e, 4e and 5e all have too much damage and hp inflation, in my view. 1e and 2e did it better. edit: 3e and 4e also had too much AC and to hit inflation, which at least 5e fixed. So they are half way there.

    hit dice and hit points

Absolutely. I think the hp dice cap at 9th or whenever it was worked better. 5e has too much damage/hit point inflation and undermines some of the good work bounded accuracy otherwise does.

Rest and Injury at your table

We use the slow healing variant (long rest gives half hit dice back but no hp, unless you spend your HD), and a modified injuries and setbacks table if reduced to zero hp (make a death save - if fail, roll on injury table). Makes a big difference. No-one wants to drop to zero hp anymore.

D&D 5E Absence of Low Level Summoning Spells

I agree. I think it was an intentional design decision - for learning the ropes, keeping the combats simpler and for balance reasons. Too much summoning = too much trap fodder, scouts, meatshields, or indeed more legit firepower. At lower levels especially, given bounded accuracy, the damage...

    D&D 5E 5e's stumbles

My top five 5e flumphs: 1. Passive perception = broken (imo!) 2. Too much hit point and damage inflation 3. Hiding bluurghh 4. Too much magic in the classes 5. Waaaay too hard to die, and even if you do: Revivify, raise dead and resurrection

D&D 5E two things about D&D that could be more interesting

Hmm re ability checks I suggest going back to OSR and using roll equal or under stat instead of a DC. That way you can then say if you roll more than 1.5 x under, it's a big success, and more than 1.5 over (or 20) it's a terrible failure. Re combat I agree with an earlier poster that roll...

D&D 5E Making Chase Rules... that actually do what they're supposed to!

I didn't know about these dice, very interesting indeed!

    Initiative: Evolutions in design

I genuinely did not know that, but it makes good sense. As it happens, in our games, combat does tend to break up into little separate melees, just because the whole "focus firing" is a bit, I dont know, too clinical/predictable - I dunno - just doesnt seem right!

D&D 5E Making Chase Rules... that actually do what they're supposed to!

I read this thread title and thought - I've got some rules for that! And you had already found them! LOL. Glad someone at least has seen that chase post for DnD hackers guild. I think your variant rules would work well. I especially like your cross paths, convoluted terrain and twist options -...

Superiority dice to saves is probably OP, specially combo with bless, paladin etc.

    D&D 5E How do you play D&D?

Mostly online for me and currently with friends. I've had a few online stints with strangers too (campaign). Still meet up in person with friends every about 3-4 months for a session. But online once a week for 2 hours is just so regular, and so easy to organize, that it has become our dominant...

    Initiative: Evolutions in design

Reading this thread reminded me of another one where an initiative deck came up as an idea. I REALLY like that idea - each PC gets a card, so do monsters. You draw a card and that person takes their turn. It has more of a surprise factor than rolling an tallying up an intiative board, since...

    Initiative: Evolutions in design

Additionally, you can get focus fire issues using whole side initiative where the players sort out their turns - the PCs all swamp and destroy the focused target on their turn. The monsters then respond in kind, focus firing one PC. It can be a bit predictable and you don't feel like there is...

D&D 5E Brief Thoughts on Traps and Player Agency

I think this thread demonstrates that traps are one of the hardest areas of the game to have fun with. There's been threads on traps before and no consensus has emerged, from what I remember. I some ways I like the OSR approach to traps before thieves existed at all - everyone just says what...

    What 5e got wrong
