D&D 5E New playtest packet available.

I just looked in page 23 of the Magic Items section of the current playtest document, and there it was. :p Seriously, though - if individual items are okay, but two or three of them combined could make the game less challenging than it ought to be, I am of the view that it should be called out...

D&D 5E New playtest packet available.

Yes, it's called "eyeballing encounter difficulty" - something that most DMs that cut their teeth on 2e and earlier editions learned to do. 3e's CR system was simply a way of making the DM's job easier by providing better guidelines given certain assumptions. Throw the assumptions out the...

D&D 5E New playtest packet available.

Not by an infinite amount. Just by 100%. ;)

4th edition, The fantastic game that everyone hated.

No, I'm fairly sure that "Edition warriors immediately attack and fight to the death." was a lot worse for 4e. :erm:

D&D 5E New playtest packet available.

Hopefully, we won't get any virulent "5e is sacrificing simulation/logic/real-world physics for balance" posts. :]

Iron hide? "Such heroic nonsense." :p

4th edition, The fantastic game that everyone hated.

My view is that it expanded the game, rather than changed it. To continue your analogy, to me it's more like Lego Star Wars and Lego Galaxy Squad: you can use them together or separately, as you wish.

4th edition, The fantastic game that everyone hated.

I am certainly biased, ;) but IMO, one of the best arguments in favor of 4e is the quality and class of its proponents. :p

D&D 5E "But Wizards Can Fly, Teleport and Turn People Into Frogs!"

And one key reason why was something you touched on later in the same post: 5e seems to be splitting the difference between 4e and earlier editions - the current playtest has 17th level and higher wizards capping out at just 19 daily spells, only four of which are 6th and higher level (one of...

4th edition, The fantastic game that everyone hated.

I pretty much consider all of this to be irrelevant because in my view, classes are only means to an end. The real issue is not what is encompassed by a class concept, but whether I can take the character creation rules (race, class including multiclassing, and other bits if available such as...

D&D 5E [Poll] Do You Like The Direction D&DN Is Heading In?

Interestingly enough, I'm not really a fan of it because it seems to me to be a step backward from the balance, transparency, flexibility and innovation of 4e. WotC really does have its work cut out for it.

A modest proposal: The Edition Wars "Swear Jar"

Better yet, any time you find yourself saying something bad about any edition of D&D, go donate to the Rebuilding EN World Kickstarter. :)

Why not Harry Di- Oh, never mind.

What if DMs started their campaigns like Kickstarter projects?

How about "The DM demands tribute!" :p That is too sensible a suggestion for what is essentially a silly thread. ;) That's more like it! :D

What if DMs started their campaigns like Kickstarter projects?

Just a bit of humour, inspired by the Rebuilding ENWorld Kickstarter and this thread. Pledge $5 or more Born Hero: Start with +2 to all ability scores. Pledge $10 or more Well-Connected: Name and describe an NPC in the campaign who is friends with your PC and will provie help (within...

    D&D 5E D&D 5E Kickstarter

I think a more interesting question would be: what if DMs tried to run their campaigns like a kickstarter project? But, I think I will start another thread and not derail this one. :p

4th edition, The fantastic game that everyone hated.

IMO, flatter math is just more forgiving of the DM's mistakes or miscalculations. If the break DC of a wooden door is 15 and the break DC of an adamantium door is 25, there are ony nine points in between to insert stone, iron, steel, mithral, etc. At the end of the day, if one DM says that the...

4th edition, The fantastic game that everyone hated.

Certainly, some tensions are eternal, but 4e has seen a lot of development since 2008, and there are now potential solutions, if not necessarily official solutions, to some of the age-old complaints. For example, "I can't play an archer fighter" can easily be addressed by adding an archer...

4th edition, The fantastic game that everyone hated.

I would argue that it does exactly what it is supposed to do: set challenges. Unfortunately, it is not the only thing that several players expect it to do (i.e. take into account the world-building and simulation aspects). It's like a diner that provides a meal that tastes great, but looks like...
