    D&D 5E D&D's XP & advancement system is a bit broken. I have a solution.

You may not realize that 5e's XP and advancement system has some inherent problems. I didn't until I did some number crunching. The biggest problem is that encounter difficulty does not always correlate with the xp payout for the encounter. I explain the problems and propose a solution in this...

D&D 5E My thoughts on the Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide on Game Master's Journey

Well, that's assuming you're concerned about keeping the Realms "current". Personally, with the mess they made of it in 3e and 4e (and now in 5e trying to "fix" it), if I were running in the Realms, I'd roll back the the 1e Realms.

D&D 5E My thoughts on the Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide on Game Master's Journey

I just released a new episode of my podcast, Game Master's Journey, in which I give a detailed discussion and review of the Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide for D&D. This book is made for a very specific player, and if that player is you, then I think you'll be very happy with it. However, if...

D&D Increases Its Lead In Orr Groups Q3 2015 Report

There are a lot of problems with these statistics, many of which have been already mentioned. When your "Others" category is so high up, that's a clear sign you need to split that category up. Others is meaningless in data interpretation. There's also way too much bias in the categories--how...

Discussion of Game Preparation and Review of Never Unprepared on Game Master's Journey

Greetings fellow gamers. I just posted a new episode of my podcast, Game Master's Journey, in which I discuss game preparation and the book Never Unprepared by Phil Vecchione. Even after over 20 years of game mastering experience, I learned a lot from this book. I will be doing more of these...

    D&D 5E Game Master's Journey podcast covers D&D from the DM's perspective

My newest podcast, Game Master's Journey, is an evolution of my very successful Numenera podcast, GM Intrusions. I wanted to branch out into other systems. I have a large number of episodes focusing in on D&D. All my episodes are aimed at helping DMs improve their craft and have more fun doing...

    Discussion of the Cypher System

I agree that the system doesn't focus enough on exploration. The game claims to be about exploration, but the majority of character abilities are combat related. I talked about this in detail (along with some numbers) in an episode of my GM Intrusions podcast I called Discovery Through Combat.

    Discussion of the Cypher System

The guidelines for the difficulties given in the book are pretty easy to grasp, in my opinion. 0 - routine - anyone can do this basically every time 1 - simple - most people can do this most of the time 2 - standard - typical task requiring focus, but most people can usually do this 3 -...

    Numenera Core Rulebook

5 out of 5 rating for Numenera Core Rulebook The Numenera corebook is beyond excellent in every measurable way. Because of the excellent binding and thick, high quality paper, my book looks good as new after over a year of hard use. It's laid out very similarly to a good travel guide, which...

    Discussion of the Cypher System

Sorry, I was talking about a beginning character. A level 1 character isn't likely to have a +14 modifier on a roll, and will usually fail with a roll of 3. A beginning tier 1 character in Numenera, however, will often be able to succeed with a roll of 3.

    Discussion of the Cypher System

I will do my best! Difficulties in Numenera range from 0-10. Your target number on the d20 is 3x the difficulty. You don't have to roll for difficulty 0. Difficulty 1 you need a 3 or higher, difficulty 2 a 6 or higher, and so on. You can use Effort to reduce the difficulty of any...

    Discussion of the Cypher System

I don't know that in Numenera you fail less often, though you should be rolling less often. The point of that section is that in Numenera, a roll of a 3 can oftentimes be a success, where in d20 it would seldom be a success. However, I would guess that you do fail less often in Numenera, or at...

    Discussion of the Cypher System

Monte Cook made a great post about running Cypher System games on his site. I learned a lot from this post. I talked about this post in detail on episode 18 of my Numenera podcast, GM Intrusions.

Pathfinder 1E Looking fora Good Pathfinder Dungeon Crawl

Uh...not really. Average of $15 on Amazon with free shipping comes to $90 for the entire AP. Plus, you don't have to buy the whole thing at once. Also, the books you get are full color wtih glossy pages. Most other modules I've seen are black and white on normal paper.

Pathfinder 1E Bothell, WA - Interest Check for Pathfinder Adventure Path

Pathfinder 1E Looking fora Good Pathfinder Dungeon Crawl

That AP sounds interesting. I think one huge mega-dungeon would get really old. Six large dungeons with different themes and critters would probably be a lot more fun. Yeah, the AP will end up costing almost as much (around $90 if you get it on Amazon), but at least you don't have to buy it...

Pathfinder 1E Looking fora Good Pathfinder Dungeon Crawl

Thanks for the suggestions. Rappan Athuk and Slumbering Tsar both look interesting, but I'm not willing to pay $100 for an adventure. If anyone has recomendations that are more reasonably priced, I'd love to hear them. :) Has anyone run or played the Shattered Star AP? That one looks...
