D&D 4E Weekly Wrecana : The world is not made of numbers

Sorry didn't want to resurrect undying debates here. Besides, I'm pretty confident that I don't get the GNS thing right anyway. In fact I think that the first time I ever mentionned this in a discussion. And I don't want to derail a thread simply because I don't get the initial idea right! PS...

Combats and Ressources (again...) - How to condense Adventures

Vargas, but I suppose you had some rule or mechanism to restrict ERs nonetheless during the Epic tier?

D&D 4E Weekly Wrecana : The world is not made of numbers

I think I see his point, but I find the terminology confusing. It seems he's coming very close to Ron Edwards's distinction between a gamist and simulationist outlook. (link) Most games, esp. in the 80s, are simulationist: rules try to simulate reality, even when fantastic or magical. (that's...

    Perception with other skills

In another thread, Garthanos said This is intriguing. IRL, perception is clearly not a single "skill". People notice stuff they care about, or know. A car enthusiast will just *hear* a V6 closing in, or *see* a modified exhaust. While the ornithologist will see nothing of that but notice a...

Combats and Ressources (again...) - How to condense Adventures

Ah yes, my bad, what I meant is that if you try to justify the 2-milestone limit in-game, then it may come out as very artificial, sometimes. "Errr.... you can't sleep here... it's... too damp!" But in the situation you describe (a frequent one, considering I'm DMing Dark Sun currently!), for...

    Three Years in the Making...

C4, will you be showcasing more of your ideas? I'm especiall curious about your new tiers. I was developing things along that way: from WFRPG-style peon, to generic adventurer, to full-fledged adventurer (with a class), to recognized hero, to parangon (who can design new powers), to leader, to...

D&D General Weekly Wrecana : a six parter - unbloodied heroes.

Sad about Wrecan. Now I understand the In Memoriam heading. THAT is a great topic for another thread. I'll start this one tomorrow!

D&D General Weekly Wrecana : a six parter - unbloodied heroes.

Great ideas. Love the twin-stat skills. So coherent with the defenses logic. By itself, though, it feels wrong to have so little skills, but... I think it shines when you take all your ideas together: * a constrained, well-tuned, balanced skill scale (e.g. with limited bonusses, as you...

Star Wars First Edition WEG - A Love Story

A very interesting comparison. I often recommend the 4e DMG as an example of solid gaming advice, much better than most, but it's not exciting nor concise. Costikyan did a great job on these accounts, plus advice specific to the genre (notably the In media res technique). I was lucky to learn...

Star Wars First Edition WEG - A Love Story

Awesome game by Costikyan. I loved the repair/upgrade system with escalating delays. But maybe the greatest thing were the advice! It is rare that a game provides intelligent gaming advice. This book was full of it, revolving around the notion of "have fun with it."

Combats and Ressources (again...) - How to condense Adventures

Cricket, I really see two issues here. A) Resource managment. This one's easy as pie. Use the Tweet fix: simply ban Extended Rest outright until the second milestone. This is basically the technique used in the Encounter Program back then. I have used for three full campaign and it works fine...

Hello worlds! I'm a refugee - driven away by the FB/G+ wall.
