Legal Eagle has entered the chat, about OGL 1.1

I played for a long time with Roll20, free version, as I preferred to reveal whole blocks instead of seeing those aesthetically unpleasing blobs of light and shadow. (And that tier didn't even get you scripting access) But when I bought Foundry, I played around a bit with it, as it was pretty...

Legal Eagle has entered the chat, about OGL 1.1

I'm just waiting for someone to either release a dedicated skeuomorphic VTT or just enough graphical assets to do that with existing ones. Just like something that goes all out for pixel art and JRPG-ish aesthehtics (no, not talking about Shmeppy).

95% of you didn't need the OGL and you don't need ORC

My statement or theirs? I got it from here: "(36) The "First Aid" skill in MYTHUS (pages 28 and 165) is derived from the AD&D "Cure Light Wounds" spell in the AD&D 1st ed. PHB (page 43) and the AD&D OA (page 57)." Yeah, they didn't want a Gygaxian rival game, but the methods they used weren't...

95% of you didn't need the OGL and you don't need ORC

Didn't Gygax get sued because Dangerous Journeys "copied" D&D basically literally, like, having a First Aid skill, clearly based on the Cure Light Wounds spell? /s

OGL: What Are The Publishers Saying [UPDATED]

There's also the semi-recent Tides of Numenera video game. Not many games these days (or any days, TBH) that have a tabletop equivalent.

D&D Beyond Cancellations Changed WotCs Plans

Hmm, I don't know where this falls between "imprint" and "brand", but dungeons themselves seem something where the game was hugely influential.

Legal Eagle has entered the chat, about OGL 1.1

I remember the big 3.x stat block switch up, and the confusion it created. In user interfaces, "expected" is usually the best you can go for . But yeah, for 5E deviation isn't that important, not that many stats. For PF1, I would hurt badly if I couldn't use the default version. Noted. It's...

Legal Eagle has entered the chat, about OGL 1.1

What I'm wondering is where things like stat blocks are in this spectrum. They collect rules terms, but in a rather specific manner. And being able to print NPC and monster stats exactly like people expect them is a huge benefit.

Paizo Announces New Irrevocable Open RPG License To Replace the OGL

I guess they're valuing their legal options themselves. Even just a "coat of paint" massive errata variant where you change "dexterity" to "agility" and "magic missile" to "arcane barrage" could be obnoxious and lose them customers.

Paizo Announces New Irrevocable Open RPG License To Replace the OGL

I see Chaosium is on board. Anyone seen their own "BRP" license? Which includes conditions like "Don't come up with anything that's close to RQ Sorcery/CoC Sanity/Pendragon Glory." Either they changed their mind and are willing to forego such undefined areas for the sake of being part of the...

WotC Walks Back Some OGL Changes, But Not All

Or anything recognizable as a RPG. I mean, I could mesh GURPS with AD&D 1E, how far would you have to go from the mainstream to be that incompatible? Do I have to roll SAN checks?

Paizo Announces New Irrevocable Open RPG License To Replace the OGL

Is that so? The license talks about "Licensed Material", where does it say that this has to extend to the full "product"? I guess there are some formalities about the language that you have to apply to except or include material in your game, but it's not like PI/OGC declarations were always...

Paizo Announces New Irrevocable Open RPG License To Replace the OGL

I wonder whether this will grow a bit beyond what it replaces, i.e. whether some companies a) held back open licensing because of the WotC ownership and/or b) notice that people actually like that a lot more than they thought. (Come one, RTalsorian, Fuzion ORC!)

Paizo Announces New Irrevocable Open RPG License To Replace the OGL

Well, the license seems open enough, but does have some moral codes that I wouldn't like to see in a less system-/IP-specific version. But it seems okay enough. On the lightness of Cypher: It's a rather different type of game. So I'd say it would depend on the group whether it's easier to...
