    Story Elements in RPGs...

I think you might be confusing theme and plot?

    Story Elements in RPGs...

Well- I definitely don't think it would be for everyone, just like things like Adventure Paths and heavy plot based campaigns aren't for everyone. To me, picking a central theme and building characters around it doesn't seem like it would impinge upon player freedom anymore then setting style...

    Story Elements in RPGs...

So moving past Picard and his merry band of space freaks- what are your thoughts on the idea of a central theme in the campaign from the start, with characters being built with an emphasis on exploring this theme? (Whether or not there is a central character.) I often see Plot as a starting...

    Story Elements in RPGs...

Eh... I would argue there is almost always a unifying theme that the other build towards. But I don't want to get into another Picard debate. :P Aside from that- do they include them, do you think just by default? The "Organic" mode? I guess I'm wondering what would happen if people focused on...

    Story Elements in RPGs...

Well, it wouldn't be for an imaginary audience, since in my mind the players and DM serve as sort of audience, and writers combined. So the audience would be the players and GM. (Keep in mind here I'm just exploring the idea, so I don't necessarily disagree with you, but I want to play devils...

    September DDI Update news

My guess is still that this functionality will exist (eventually) in the Adventure Tools, allowing DMs to build house rules that show up when the players choose whatever campaign in the CB.

To Class or not to Class...

I prefer class based systems. (My preference comes from the DM side of things) Inevitably with classless there is always some combination of skills/powers that is the most optimized, and power gamer types end up gravitating towards them. This essentially makes it a class based system anyway...

    Anyone excited for DCC RPG?

    I like wonky dice. :)

    Story Elements in RPGs...

That's I think what I'm looking for- Where people think the overlap is , where are the divides, etc... But is this confusing more "central" with more important? (Main character was probably a bad term?) Lets say for the sake of argument our theme is exploring human nature. One character...

    Story Elements in RPGs...

I don't think having story structure elements like a main theme implies a railroad (at least anymore then giving your character an alignment does.) That's a good point on shows like that... I don't really watch them, so I don't know if there is a universal theme to them?

    Story Elements in RPGs...

My only caveat is to keep it civil. :) I mean theme in the literary sense; the broad idea, or moral of the story. It exists along side of plot to create the whole of what the story is about. Do you ever start with any sort of "direction" before you begin? Do you find the stories told if...

    Story Elements in RPGs...

Thinking about it more, I might be better asking if a campaign should have a "theme?" Does this help role playing? Whatever your feelings on main character or not, should the players decide on a theme for the campaign and the DM tailor the adventures, world to that theme? And I don't mean to...

    Story Elements in RPGs...

Sure, each character can have a story line, but I still see that one character ultimately embodies the main theme of the story, or carries the "heart" if you will. And I guess my question is, in the end, if you look back at your campaign will you find that it was truly about all of you equally...

    Story Elements in RPGs...

Unfortunately since I haven't seen the muppet show in over 20 years I can't remember what the overriding theme of the show was... So I can't really comment. :P Wasn't the Muppet Show more of a SNL type thing? In which case there isn't really an over arching story, so you're saying you try to...

    Story Elements in RPGs...

I'm not sure I agree... I'm struggling to think of even an ensemble cast where there isn't a "main" character... Even if that main characterness is often somewhat hidden. (A lot of times in an ensemble style you have to wait until the series finale to really confirm who the show was about, but...

    Story Elements in RPGs...

Ok I'm not entirely sure what this post is about. I was just kind of thinking about stories and how they relate to the story being "told" in an RPG. I know there are different thoughts about this- IE some start with a story for the campaign, and others see the evolving campaign as the story...

    Armor and Extended Rest

I like the penalize if a failed endurance check thing, but... Rules like this I think require more then just this part of the rule. I think this is the kind of rule that would depend on random encounters and if PCs have any way of mitigating the threat, otherwise it feels like a DM ambush...

    Judges Guild... I think?

Hrmm... I didn't... But I remember I bought the Judges Guild product used... so maybe someone forgot they stashed a map in there...

    Judges Guild... I think?

No... I kind of feel like it was Tarantis, but that doesn't seem right, because the map wouldn't be a world map type map for that one would it?

D&D 4E Do you really want Greyhawk and Dragonlance for 4e

Maybe I'm becoming cynical, or something, but anytime I see compromise entering the picture in gaming these days I assume people will be pissed. :) The people who want Dragonlance will scream that it's an insult that their setting doesn't get full support, or that they now are forced to have a...
