D&D 5E Zone spells and amazing damage potential

I feel like everyone in this thread is agreeing without realizing it. This is: RAW legal via official channels, logical in terms of the question "Would this logically hurt the target?", and a brilliant bit of powergaming your DM should turn back on you tenfold if you are gutsy enough to...

3rd-Party Apps for 5E Rising From The Dead!

This makes crazy sense as a theory. Basic=OGL would bring in all the needed rules, as well as the basic structural framework for races, classes, items, monsters, etc. Yet it also locks down enough content (i.e. the material unique to the actual books) to please the internal voices that want to...

3rd-Party Apps for 5E Rising From The Dead!

They have said the conversion document is being delayed by jury duty. However, you should assume that the civic duty of the residents of Washington is the biggest obstacle to product development across the board.

D&D 5E Of Wizards and specific 5e questions and musings

My thoughts, some of which will echo what's already been said. There was a big push from playtesting to make combat go around the table quickly, so players didn't idle between turns as long. And it's working, combat is smoother than ever, with an "old school" vibe. As you've played 3e, you've...

    D&D 5E Topics for a camp

Or you could use an NPC to kick off the campfire conversation. Have them ask the direct questions you'd like to see discussed. In-game, more organic, same results. Caveat: They could say "Stuff it, NPC. Nobody cares about your touchy feely discussion topics." Which is still roleplaying. ;)

    D&D 5E Aversion to Creativity?

I've been doing a great deal of work for 5e, but it has almost entirely been worldbuilding rather than mechanical in nature.

At Least 4 Months For Conversion Documents

This stuff baffles me. I won't even pretend to know how smaller divisions within a huge publically traded company operate, but my gut feeling is that no one would be so essential that their absence would entirely halt specific projects until they return. Side note: My favorite quote from the...

D&D 5E How many magic items should a 4th. lvl PC have?

If you want to look at the math behind the magic item tables, here's an excellent thread where they did just that: http://www.enworld.org/forum/showthread.php?395770-Analysis-of-quot-Typical-quot-Magic-Item-Distribution

D&D 5E Classes you're hoping WotC will create

As a standalone class, psion with both a "pure psion" and psychic warrior path makes sense. Favored soul could also work as a class or possibly a cleric path with a unique flavor. But what I'd like most to see is the wuxia/Oriental Adventures classes (or class paths): - Samurai - Ninja -...

    D&D 5E Are hardback AP's a waste?

I would argue WotC and Paizo are doing it in a somewhat similar way. WotC's start to finish moedules (like upcoming PotA) are similar to Paizo's collected hardbound APs (hardback Rise of the Runelords, for example, rather than individual AP books that only cover a few levels of play).

D&D 5E Convince me to Spend the Money

The PDFs are only the basic rules. They have full "how to play" rules, but only 4 classes and races. The book version also has feats. The PDFs absolutely will not replace amount of material in the PHB. But if you are on the fence, they are free and will help you decide if the book is worthwhile...

7 Years of D&D Stories? And a "Big Reveal" Coming?

Diversifying might acutally work out. A portion of my disposable income is going towards both board games and video games. Got a hunch that's pretty common overlap.

D&D 5E D&D Races vs. Monsters (take away lessons on converting)

I think they've recognized the fact that players and DMs have different needs and want things designed for the way they function. ...Which makes this sound a bit like women's deodorant advertisement. :erm:

D&D 5E D&D Races vs. Monsters (take away lessons on converting)

This approach is SO welcome. ECL never quite did what I wanted. The only time we had a real good go with it was our "everyone plays an ECL monster race" campaign.

    D&D 5E Swimming in armor

River fisherman are in real danger if the water gets above there waders. They are drowning deaths from this every year. I would imagine river+suit of armor could get very deadly very fast. That said, 5e is big on heroics and simple solutions, so something as simple as disavantage should suffice.

D&D 5E Help with a simple exp system for 5E

I used a modified version of this in a 4e campaign. The way the quests worked: they are titled based on what the players know at that moment; you can even change the quest name along the way (we used a mini whiteboard). Example: When the villagers say something is killing their cattle and...

D&D 5E Help with a simple exp system for 5E

Here is what I am about to try out: Quest Point System (QP) Gaining QP: Minor Quests are worth 1 QP. (this includes most side quests that come up organically during gameplay) Standard Quest are worth 2-3 QP. Major overarching story plot points might be worth extra. QP Needed to Level...

D&D 5E So what exactly is Wizards working on?

Reynand is laying down some wisdom. 2e, Pathfinder, and 4e all have their crap modules. I can't think of any 3.x WotC modules that were outright stinkers off the top of my head, but I'm sure they are out there. Our group mainly did homebrew back then. The 3.x module stuff is mostly fond memories...
