Indie Games – Gamerstable Episode 56

That's bizarre. I game mostly with indie gamers and we all wear the tag proudly. I'd game with any other indie gamers in a heartbeat. Where do we find the term used negatively?

Can I be a girl with a big sword?

I am not surprised, but only because of my recent experience, to wit: When we wrote Hollowpoint, which is very much a macho, hyper-competence myth, the kind of thing you see in Magnificent Seven or any samurai tale, and like that, we thought we would be writing to a largely male audience. We...

    Creating PC's with Personality

Great stories revolve around relationships. Invent some for your character; a half dozen people she knows and loves or is bound to in other ways. Have her be wrong about what some of those relationships are.

    RPGs and mental health issues

I've been playing since about 1976 and have had exactly two players become a problem because of mental illness. In both cases it was schizophrenia and both were within a two year span in the early 80s. I've met some people who I suspect should see doctor, mind you, aside from those two, but no...

    Campaign Design

I always start with a map, even if it's something the players will never see. It almost doesn't matter what kind of map -- it could be a sector map for Traveller, completely randomly generated and then interpreted. It could be a fantasy geography, which immediately demands that I place and...

    space philosophies

I don't get what's special about direct observation (assuming there even is such a thing) -- QED makes predictions which are so reliably true and so accurate that we use them all the time in critical technology. It's as true as it gets by any useful measurement. Any new theory cannot invalidate...

    Emotional Attachment

Investment of time and money? Seems to be the same with phone selection, operating systems, &c.

Is there too much cost disparity between DM's and players?

Seems like that must depend on the game since many games exist complete in a single book. Some even explicitly allow a PDF to be shared between all players at the table.

Bringing PCs together when starting a new campaign

Providing group cohesion is a priority for all our game designs at VSCA though each game goes about it differently. Some of these methods are very portable to existing games, so lets have a look: In Diaspora it's implied (and in future revisions will probably be more explicit) -- the characters...

    Suggestions for non-fantasy rpgs

You might find our humble FATE sf game, Diaspora, interesting. We just had the good fortune to win a gold Ennie for best rules, but you'll find more commentary and reviews at the web site as well.

    [Diaspora] Friday Night Science Fiction

See, THAT'S dark. And not so hopeful. :D Maybe your character will get eaten by a giant bug!

    [Diaspora] Friday Night Science Fiction

You know, the darker the universe is the more opportunity there is for hope. Hopefulness is mostly about direction -- are the characters rebuilding or just profiteering in the destruction, abetting a deeper fall? No matter how dark things are, a team that is rebuilding is hopeful.

    [Diaspora] Friday Night Science Fiction

This is one of the most hopeful starting scenarios I've seen for Diaspora, so I'm excited to see where it goes. Have you got a cluster map yet to show off?

DM can't get the hang of high-level play

How would you price that? It looks extremely powerful so I hope the answer is "highly". They all have decent con, so tons of hit points. The problem is more the save versus die effect, not damage handling. Ironically, they had cloaks of acid resistance but have been loathe to wear them...

DM can't get the hang of high-level play

Honestly I think the last death---the cleric getting the smackdown from the Greenvise---was fairly avoidable. The PCs were moving through completely unknown terrain that was obviously dangerous if not actively hostile, and yet they had no long term buffs up and had no native guidance at all...

DM can't get the hang of high-level play

Re: Re: DM can't get the hang of high-level play I'm the referee in question. The creature in this case was a Greenvise and on its surprise round it released its Death Fog ability. On the round following the surprise round the cleric drew a late initiative and the Greenvise full attacked...
