    D&D 4E What 5E needs to learn from 4E

My grudge with 4E fights is that it provides a player with a very limited set of choices. Like in WoW you have a number of powers and all you need to do is "press the corresponding button" at the right time. DMs experience pretty much the same thing with monsters. So all creativity boils down to...

Gygax on Realism in Game Design

I think he just playfully paraphrased an old quote.. Don't remember the author, but it went like this: "Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel". Made me chuckle actually. :)

    D&D 5E I don't understand the reasoning behind D&Dnext

I think it's not even about 4ed. being not very successful. The main point here is that 4ed. doesn't need a sequel. Love it or hate it, it doesn't need so badly to be further worked on. While previous editions still have room to grow.

D&D 5E Which 5e innovations do you like the most?

Advantage/Disadvantage mechanics Base class + background/specialty is a brilliant chargen system. doesn't rule out 3e style customizability for advanced players (you can always create custom ones!), but is VERY noob friendly. might need some tweaking though.

    ADOM resurrection and tabletop RPG

I so disagree! In no other game are monster sprites as scary as those letters! I never ran from anything as fast as i ran from light brown R's or purple @'s. And don't get me started on dark blue D's, grey X's, all kinds of &'s.. Sheesh, i can't believe i still remember all this stuff after so...

    Variant: Skills, Backgrounds and Specialties

Been reading the "skill list gone in wrong direction" thread and it gave me some very sound ideas. What if instead of a default list of skills, backgrounds would rather encompass your area of expertise. If a skill check is connected to character's area of expertise, he rolls d20+ability mod as...

Rope Trick VS Discern Location... Rope Trick wins!!!

Nothing to argue about, imho. Just one of those instances in the rules where DM fiat is acceptable (and even required if it's important for the plot). I would also rule DL to show where the RT originated from, but that's just me. I would be totally cool to play with a DM who'd rule otherwise...

    request for adventure ideas

Here's an idea. Evil adventurers laid siege on bandit fort. Bandits tried to fight them but quickly realised they are outmatched and locked up in their fort. A few days passed and suddenly another group arrived - a renowned paladin, his squire, two pages and a small retinue of men-at-arms (for...

    Skills - Playtest Packet 2

Obviously this playtest is not about testing skill system, so i'd think this is just a placeholder. It is obvious that skill had comparatively very little attention from the team at this stage.

[Playtest 2] Races: Humans too good?

Humans didn't strike me as "to good". On the contrary i was more like "that's it?" Looks more like last resort for those who rolled very low stats.

    A difficult question

I don't know how to answer this question, because i think about DnDNext in completely different terms. I want it to be a fun game, that's all. I don't want devs to specifically cater to demands of the masses. When first edition was created there were no polls and public playtests. They just did...

are you more interested in 5e or numenera?

I'm more interested in D&DNext for now mostly because we've seen a score of sneak-peaks on it and i liked a lot of what i've seen so far. Can't say i know anything about Numenera except a very rough and barely informative overview. So it all may change as both projects progress.

Can someoone explain the "Daily Hate" for me?

I think the 4ed's at-will/encounter/daily paradigm just makes the game more centered around encounters rather than around adventuring in general. So i guess a lot of old-school roleplayers find this approach too wargamey.

    Disintegrate does not affect trees

Oh no, this is one of those horrible instances when something is not unambigously explained in the books and requires a DM ruling. I can sense some brains boiling.

Why not combine the Fighter and Monk Classes?

Those are just names. Who cares about names? Players want to play characters, concepts. And be viable. Your DM wants to keep it simple? No backgrounds/themes? You roll a core fighter. And you can call him a knight if you want. Want more mechanical variety? You roll a fighter with Rashemi...

Why not combine the Fighter and Monk Classes?

A fine idea actually. I think this could be done via backgrounds&themes. Like you can build a monk from a fighter with an oriental background and martial artist theme. More variants: oriental background and noble warrior theme could make a samurai, while slums-dweller background and martial...
