    Best Star Wars RPG?

I haven't played (or even read) the FFG games yet, but I prefer the WEG d6 Star Wars over the WotC d20 versions. I think it captures the spirit of the films a lot better, in part because it plays a lot faster.

D&D 5E Battlemap Vs. Theater of the Mind

I like using minis & battle map as play aids when there are a large number of combatants and/or when the layout if the environment really matters. I used minis much of the time when playing AD&D back in high school, but never really noticed it slowing down the game until 3e. The main...

Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana - The 5E "Battlesystem" Mass Combat Rules Are Here!

Agreed. Like BattleSystem in 1e and 2e, these rules would be good for conducting a castle siege or an asault on a town. When you've got nations at war with one another, War Machine was hard to beat. X10 Red Arrow, Black Shield demonstrated that there is a place for both types of mass combat...

"Tabletop D&D Has Lost Its Way" Says Pathfinder Video Game Exec

I would like to have read the entire interview so as to be able to put all of Urquhart's comments into the proper context. My reading is that he thinks that the future of tabletop D&D is a big question mark. Many people on this very board have expressed the concern that 5e is essentially a...

TSR TSR's Lawrence Schick on the Development of The Known World

Awesome. I got my start with the Mentzer Basic and Expert Sets, so the Known World WAS the D&D campaign setting in my eyes. The setting can be pretty gonzo at times, with a lot of silliness and a lack of internal consistency, but it was wildly imaginative, and will always be dear to me.

D&D 5E Is Anyone Using Variant Encumbrance?

I wish that 5e had included an encumbrance variant similar to the one described on Delta's D&D Hotspot: http://deltasdnd.blogspot.ca/2007/04/encumbrance.html http://deltasdnd.blogspot.ca/2010/09/stone-encumbrance-detail-example.html It uses the old English stone as the unit of measurement...

    Top 10 Classic D&D Movies

"Run away!" and "it's just a flesh wound" have to be the most-quoted lines from the most-quoted movie.

    D&D 5E The Slaying Stone

I ran this adventure back in late 2010, and I thought it was pretty good. I think it's a good intro for new players, as it allows for some open-endedness in approach without being overwhelming. I also liked how it provided some PC backgrounds specific to the adventure. I think that it would...

Deluxe Dungeon Master's Screen: It Lives!

I really like the design of this screen. Just looking at the 3.5 DM Screens gives me a headache. Same with the original AD&D one. Too many tables, all in a very small typeface. When DMing, I always use a screen, but I find that I rarely actually look at the content on the inside of it during...

D&D 5E Classic or just plain brilliant adventures/modules

I'll add yet another recommendation for B10 Night's Dark Terror. And yes, it does work best if you use its setting rather than trying to make it fit elsewhere. Also N1 Against the Cult of the Reptile God, B7 Rahaisia, and the U1-3 series. And UK4 When a Star Falls.

D&D 5E Gamehole Con Live Tweeting Perkins Panel

On a world that operates under the same laws of biology, chemistry, and physics that Earth does, yes. On a world governed by magical and divine laws, not so much. Drow have jet black skin and white hair because they are like a photographic negative of the high elves -- which in AD&D had fair...

D&D 5E Gamehole Con Live Tweeting Perkins Panel

If I'm writing an adventure that involves a slightly customized lich, say, it'd be really handy if I could copy the lich statblock out of the Monster Manual and then tweak it to my needs, rather than having to rewrite the text of its abilities (to avoid WotC's copyright) and re-do the layout (to...

D&D 5E Gamehole Con Live Tweeting Perkins Panel

I agree. The OGL exists and other publishers have been using it for 14 years; any other considerations are pretty much irrelevant. There is nothing to be gained on the part of WotC to continue operating as if the OGL doesn't exist. Might as well embrace it and use it to their advantage...

    D&D 5E Dungeonscape no more?

Silverlight itself was actually a very good technology. The terrible performance of the character generator can be attributed to the fact that every action you took triggered a call to the web services on WotC's servers. Every time you selected an option, the program had wait for a response...

D&D 5E Does WotC suck at selling games?

Same here, except it was Mentzer Basic in my case. I was a DM before I was a player. Before starting to play D&D, I had read some of the Endless Quest books (as I liked Choose Your Own Adventure books) and I'd also seen the Saturday morning cartoon. I also saw a lot of ads for D&D in my Star...

    D&D 5E Traps etc... in 5th Edition

The most important thing to me is to use traps in such a way that you don't have players doing this: P: I listen at the door. DM: You don't hear anything. P: I check the door for traps. DM: You don't find any traps. P: Hmm. Suspicious. I check the doorknob. Is it trapped? DM: No. You are...

    D&D 5E Stealth in 5E

I just keep in mind the first lesson of how not to be seen. Not to stand up. Everything else is a judgement call.
