    Experience Points: Foxes and Hedgehogs

The best and hardest to follow advice I have is to not give advice! Seriously. People do what fits with their own beliefs, values and where they are at in their life. However well intentioned, most advice will either be telling the person what they already know (condescending) or be...

Driving NARRATIVE in RPGs, not STORY

If you have characters with real personalities and back stories who are grounded in a campaign containing meaningful relationships and events and present them with difficult decisions which have consequences you provide the opportunity for narrative. Is this possible in D&D? Absolutely. Just...

D&D 5E Warlord as a Fighter option; Assassin as a Rogue option

I suspect your sense of alienation isn't really related to KM's ideas, he has clearly stated its just a thought experiment. Don't worry he's not one of the designers of DDN so there's no need to convince him that you don't like his ideas. I personally love the idea of making every build an...

D&D 5E Warlord as a Fighter option; Assassin as a Rogue option

I'd view this as a feature. I quite like the ideas behind what you are doing here, maneuvers open up the fighter and rogue for tailoring in the way 3E hinted at but failed to deliver.

Combat issues: slayer + at-will magic missile.

Wow, seems to be a lot of strong opinions based on theory and preferences from previous editions. Perhaps after people have done more than just browse the rules and have played multiple test sessions we can get some opinions on how things actually play. Or just skip through and read Fifth...

    Aeon (updated 10/9/14)

I can't recall a extended period of this level of intensity of posting ever before in the whole time the story hour has been going. It's truly wonderful, as if a cacade of posts has been initiated. I wonder if Eadric may just end up with Nehael in the end somehow.

    Setting inspiration

I've always thought the themes of Babylon 5 would make a great campaign setting: Humanity as a small fish in a big pond Mimbari - think elves with a strict caste system including an agressive warrior caste, bad blood with humanity resulting in the near genocide of humanity before a mysterious...

The Traveling Circus (aka Truly Peculiar Campaign Themes)

I've played in a campaign that had a travelling circus as the base for adventuring. The concept was that it was a huge continent travelling Cirque du Soleil affair complete with a contingent of illusionists who put on a light and sound spectacular. My chacarter was an apprenctice amongst the...

How often do you use minions?

Thanks for the responses, it tends to support my gut feeling that fairly frequent use of minions can be a good thing. I also like the idea of two-hit minions.

How often do you use minions?

I'm curious as to whether DM's out there load fights up with 'em, use them in a mix with other roles, or don't use them much at all. I find one of the biggest differences of feel in 4E to previous editions is the lastability (is that even a word?) of humanoid monsters like goblins, orcs etc. In...

My Vitality/Wound System - Feedback Wanted

I'm looking at trialing a new VP/WP system in my next game - pretty much per SRD but critical hits do damage to VP as per normal 3E but also do 1 point of damage to WP. The clincher is that any damage to WP results in a -1 penalty to all actions per point of WP taken. Usually this will be more...

    TRAILBLAZER - PDF Release - Discussion/Questions/Errata

I seem to recall it being mentioned that once the hardcover came out that an update of the pdf would be made available to those who've already purchased it. If so, how?

Combat Reactions v. Swift & Immediate Actions

I'm curious about the changes made to the combat reflexes feat. Adding Dex to BAB will at best add one combat reaction per round and often not unless you have a very high Dex bonus - why not seperate the feat from Dex and have it just add one combat reaction a round?

    Rolemaster?

It looks horribly complicated but is actualy quite a simple system in play (character creation however takes a bit of getting around, but is due to the fact that everything is skill based and allows a huge amount of detail). The basic system is roll d100 add to skill and compare to a chart. A...

    Surviving low-level old school D&D

This. My first decade of gaming was in BECMI (we went straight from BECMI to 3E) and we saw PC deaths regularly and TPK's were not an odd occurance. You get around it with better tactics and smart play and we made a few rules tweaks like max HP on first level and deaths door, but ATEOTD...

Planescape was Handholding. Forked from Plane Next Door/

I hate it when that ultra-rational component of my consciousness stirs the pot - quiten down mind!

    role-playing accents, dialects, voices, etc.

I've found the main thing is to focus on what is fun. Who cares if your character's accent is derivative or improperly done, as long as you set it within an acheivable scope and focus more on enjoying it and using it to bring your character to life, I don't think it matters if your muck it up...

    Campaign Assumptions!

I think your use of the term "technology" is perhaps a misleading one here - it sounds more like you are referring to a few groupings of particular technologies, particularly military and mechanical. "Technology" is a rather broad term, and to suggest that the west was superior (whatever that...
