D&D 4E Showing the Math: Proving that 4e’s Skill Challenge system is broken (math heavy)

Umm, I think that it's rather difficult to say a single overpowered spell is more serious than the central mechanic for non-combat challenges being broken.

D&D 4E Showing the Math: Proving that 4e’s Skill Challenge system is broken (math heavy)

I think it's time we got someone from WOTC in here to work over this with us. Seriously. We have got a problem. Also, Skill Challenges were a major selling point of the system for me, so if there isn't some damned good explanation for this, I think I'll be justified in being kinda pissed off...

    D&D 4E A simulationist DM has a few reluctant questions about 4E

Also very good reasoning, I'm familiar with that explanation as well. I'm pretty sure it holds up in this case - there's actually also some support for that in the D&D rules already. You'll notice that the way knockout blows work is that it's simply a choice. They player who reduces a monster...

    How do you interpret rules?

I'm a law student. I actually use pretty much the same mental toolkit as a gamer that I do for my classes (Yes, I am an honest-to-god rules lawyer, if you want to take it that way.) I was sort of surprised by the specific-beats-general canon they put up front, if only because it was so obvious...

    D&D 4E A simulationist DM has a few reluctant questions about 4E

You know, I'm aware of that now that you mention it. But I think I got the idea from how the old Power Word: Kill spell worked.

    D&D 4E A simulationist DM has a few reluctant questions about 4E

You know, it occurred to me that there is actually at least one good way to handle stuff like baleful polymorph or petrification, as wizard spells. Okay, bear with me here. The spell is a normal attack, probly v. Fortitude. It has a normal, or maybe slightly better than normal damage value...

    D&D 4E 4e FAQ

The Monster Manual entry states that Demons are completely fearless, and act only out of a desire to destroy, that they don't even have a self-preservation instinct. In what is I believe the very next paragraph, it states that Balors cow other demons into working for them because those lesser...

    Minions and Temporary HPs

Here's my feelings on the matter: I'm not so arrogant as to state Mr. Sims is wrong. However, plenty of people on this board already have the book. If his answer is correct, someone from WotC should be able to give us a text reference where that information could be found or extrapolated. If...

I also have the books [merged] (info on upcomming Power sources and more)

I know this is an odd thing to be interested in, but what kind of world-building stuff is stated or implied? Game-world economics? DMG stuff on the political and social structures of the world? How hard they are to mess with using skill challenges, etc.? Anything someone with the book cares to...

    The Arms Race of Races

Oh, I was thinking more about the tactic, described above, of a tiefling wizard using ranged attacks against anything bloodied. Nothing to complain about, it just amuses me. "He ninjaed my kobold!" Tiefling player shrugs. "He was bloodied."

And thus new archetypes emerge naturally from the rules. Soon, the Tiefling Kill-Stealer will be a stereotypical 4E PC.

    4e Battle Music! My Dilemma.

I use Johnny Cash. Ummm...your mileage may vary. A lot.

Not really. He seems like an okay guy, but I think we have pretty vastly differing philosophies.

Minions. The DM knows 'em. Do the players?

I've just been telling them. I can keep plenty of other cards close to my chest, but this one feels a little unfair. Since minions are such a meta-game construct already, I might as well just let the players in on it. Also, it just feels a little unfair to me. I'd want to know which was...

    AC and description

This rather begs the question, though. Why not then just let the PCs have the AC appropriate to their level and role, and let them pick whatever window dressing they like?

Tiefling Warlord for KotS + Extra Skill Challenge

There can't be utility 1 powers, you don't get them until level 2. I'd do it like this. Leaf on the Wind, Warlord Utility 8 "I am a leaf on the wind, see how I soar." Daily * Any Reaction Target: Self Effect: You may choose to automatically change the result of any die roll you have just made...

Tiefling Warlord for KotS + Extra Skill Challenge

Huh. Maybe the listed weight includes his armor? Since the module apparently can't tell us what the PC's AC is without the armor they're equipped with, one might suppose that un-armored weight isn't worthy of being considered.

Tiefling Warlord for KotS + Extra Skill Challenge

Uhh, I've re-downloaded it, and I'm still not seeing the correction in place.

    Impressions from KotS

Just ran it last night. Pretty good stuff. The players seemed to enjoy the new system, and I'd read the book thoroughly enough that I had the rules issues pretty much down. Also, I hate reading text out loud to players, so I just glanced to see who knew what and then winged it* and...
