Grappling, turn undead and everything else that doesn´t use D20 mechanics and forces my players to read the PHP before each action. Simpler gameplay.

I agree with the original post. The more painted miniatures the better. The discovery of "dipping" really made it easier for my group.

Of course You should allow it to work. :) That kind of thinking and making up their own sollutions is part of what makes the game fun. Or if You don´t want it to go all the way at least let it affect the power of the trap in some way. And no, there is nothing later in the cave that will be...

The issue here seems more to be about your mothers fear about D&D then your brothers age. I for one dont think there is any problem with 8 year olds playing the game but thats me. :)
