    Why the hate for complexity?

Yes, and you didn't have to roll dice to see which spells you knew. Much more accommodating.

What are you Reading? Agleam April 2019 edition

I finished Origins of Political Order by Francis Fukuyama. It covers the history of political power from prehistoric times to the French Revolution, and it has changed the way I see society and politics in pre-modern societies. Really eye-opening.

    Why the hate for complexity?

The spells were overwhelming, and we didn't have a great handle on them. We up-gunned lots of spells because there were a few really good spells plus lots of mediocre ones. We did not successfully suppress the best spells (eg, haste).

    Why the hate for complexity?

Yes. And as for 3.5 spells, they were special snowflakes even after our work to standardize spell descriptions that came to us from 2E.

    Why the hate for complexity?

As RPGs become more normalized and popular, one would expect them to become less complex. There's a certain geeky personality type that has a high tolerance for weapon lengths, weapon speed factors, etc. The broader the appeal of the games, the more gamers there will be who don't put up with...

I'm happy to see that, if the 3E system isn't perfect, at least no one else has found a perfect solution, either. For my latest system design work (Over the Edge), I went with a much less detailed, more free-form system that doesn't formalize individual or repeated attempts this way.

John Wick Sells 7th Sea to Chaosium

That's good news, and I'm happy for everyone. Chaosium has plenty of experience managing and rebooting old game systems, as well as working out from under a Kickstarter mess. They already have a sprawling catalog, so there's room for 7th Sea.

    Recommend Some Rules Lite Systems

The nice thing about 13th Age (if I do say so myself) is that character creation is easier than it is in PF, and yet the game makes more room character customization rather than less. Something minimalist, such as C&C, gives you less character customization. I liked my 3E campaign back in the...

    layoffs?

thanks for the kind words Thanks for all the kind words and thoughts. Personally, I'm in good shape financially and emotionally. Wizards has offered me a generous severance package, things are in good shape on the home front, and work hasn't exactly been wine and roses for me lately. No one...

    Jonathan Tweet's 4th Edition Campaign

a similar campaign If you were to do a similar campaign and you generated any material that I could use (such as art for the various planets or people), I hope you'll share. You might remember that I've solicited suggestions from others who have been following the campaign online, and I've...

    Jonathan Tweet's 4th Edition Campaign

my 4E campaign now on Wizards forums Aw, you just liked my campaign write-ups because I used to spoil paragon path names and that sort of thing. ;) I'm still blogging my campaign, this time on my staff blog on the Wizards forums. All the old material has been saved (thanks to Michelle Brunes...
