Is 4th edition getting soft? - edited for friendly content :)

How so? If the player has no investment in the character whatsoever, you kill the character off, he grumbles a bit because of the inconvenience and rolls up the next one (probably already prepared, if you have a high fatality rate. If the player is very attached to the character, and has...

Is 4th edition getting soft? - edited for friendly content :)

As much as I love this analogy, it only covers one side, D&D as a Wargame/CRPG with a faceless avatar that gets killed off and immediately replaced with another character (often a clone). It's quite different for the other extreme, the storytelling game. In that case, killing off a PC (without...

Or what happens when game designers try to fit two entirely different systems together, instead of just throwing one out. ;)

Among others, the Bodak is in the random encounter table in the Dungeon Master's guide for Level 8 Characters. They are supposed to be thrown randomly at the party, your trusty guide tells you as much. That I fully agree with. To you as well.

A minor rant: the Elf spectrum

Unless FR manages to fit them in again. Together with demonic elves, mountain elves, rubber elves and elf elves. But then again, FR has silly subraces for everything other than humans. In defense of Wizards, multiple elf subraces have been pretty common in modern fantasy. High Elves, Wood Elves...

Or just go all the way and make it damage instead of a save. Oh please. You know just as well as any of us that there is no such thing as a PC Wizard with Constitution 10. The Player Handbook specifically tells you that Wizards need high Con, so they have. (Which is pretty bad by the way, they...

A proposal for an alternate form of level draining

I'd have to agree with that. It would be weird if one undead, after killing 100 random living beings, suddenly becomes more powerful than the gods themselves. What I could see would be like this: "Whenever this creature kills a living being of equal or greater Level, it permanently gains one...

And there is still no difference, because, as is, the most common death effects all do negative damage when the target makes the save, so the association with negative damage is there anyway. And the ability does treat heroes and ordinary guys different to begin with, because the better a hero...

I'm curious, what precisely is the flavor difference between "Save against Fortitude, DC 20, death on failure" and "100 negative damage, Fortitude Save DC 20 for half damage (or no damage, if you want)"? In both cases, you have an ability that will kill the ordinary guy if it hits (the second...

Iron Heroes - I have it in my hands!

I'll definately have a Executioner in my campaign then. ^^ I have just one question left then. What kind of character is the harrier? I know he is supposed to use light armor and weapons, but what is the difference to the executioner? Your answers are very much appreciated. :)

Iron Heroes - I have it in my hands!

Thanks. :) So he is indeed the feat man, as some expected. And if you wouldn't mind to tell us, who gets sneak attack, the Executioner or the Thief? Or both?

Iron Heroes - I have it in my hands!

What interests me most is how shields work. +2 AC alone seems somewhat worthless for a 20th level character. Are there shield feats for them, to make them more powerful? Oh, and how does the Man-at-Arms work? Does he have token of his own? Thanks in advance. :)
