Worlds of Design: Here Be Monsters

I have definitely been luckier than you. I guess I should be nice to my players then :)

Worlds of Design: Here Be Monsters

I've never understood why it's "time consuming." It doesn't take that long for any given hex. Just terrain type and any locations you bump into.

Worlds of Design: Here Be Monsters

We've always played with maps. Getting lost in a dungeon is usually a result of running the h e double hockey stick away from something and not having time to map or right down turns etc. Sloping corridors and other map odds and ends occasionally lead PCs astray, but they generally figure it...

    White Dwarf Reflections #15

I remember this one for Andy Slack's Traveller article. WD had great material for Traveller. Thanks for bringing this one back to mind. I have the dead tree magazine, unfortunately there is no WD version of Dragon Archive (or is there?).

    Dragon Reflections #91

As always, thanks for the article. Despite this issue having a lot of good material it just didn't register with me as memorable. I have it in hard copy and PDF (courtesy of the Dragon Magazine archive). You have helped me address this oversight and look back to see the good articles in it. A...

    White Dwarf Reflections #12

As always, I appreciate these magazine recaps. They inevitably send me off to look through my old magazines.

    White Dwarf Reflections #11

White Dwarf had great material. To this day I have battle map / floorplans for every inn and tavern in my game. Nothing like a good bar brawl. Worked out my own unarmed combat rules and developed a complete list / stats of everything that could be used as a "weapon" including unconscious...

    Ernie Gygax Has Passed Away

RIP Ernie. My condolences to the whole Gygax family. I'm 66. I'm familiar with the loss of family and friends. Never easy.

RPG CROWDFUNDING NEWS – Fallen London, The Magnus Archives RPG, Trollgod's Skull Quest, and more

Did D&D do away with Thieves Cant? I've had it in my game since the Dark Ages of 1E iirc. Never occurred to me it was gone. But they did stop calling them Thieves... I'm old, which beats the alternative :D

    Dragon Reflections #89

Love the cover of this issue (and all the chess covers for that matter). The articles were good reading, but I don't remember using a lot of the material. I now have the urge to go through my Dragon hardcopies to find the pull out... like many I tend to rely on my PDFs from the Dragon Magazine...

    White Dwarf Reflections #7

White Dwarf had really great Traveller material. And D&D material for that matter. It all seemed to have more flavor and detail than TSR and GDW work at the time.

Worlds of Design: Campaign, Sequence, or One-shot?

I don't do one shots, and my campaigns are long term. I've also never run an adventure path or a short term campaign. What can I say?

    Dragon Reflections #88

Holloway was my favorite artist. Always love his stuff. And falling... never was satisfied with various attempts at "realism". I kept 1d6 / 10' and added a saving throw. Make it and its stun damage, fail its real damage. Stun damage fades at 1 point per turn) with the player unconscious until...

Worlds of Design: Campaign, Sequence, or One-shot?

How about one shot, adventure path, and ongoing campaign? For me, a setting can encompass any of these three. A military campaign may have a fairly specific goal or a broad goal, but it's not necessarily accomplished by a single path,

Here Are 2025's Most Anticipated TTRPGs... As Voted By You!

What am I picking up off this list... Dolmenwood. And I think I'll finally pick up Shadowdark (obviously not on this list). That's pretty much it for me this winter / spring. I've been waiting for them to re-print Shadowdark and I understand it will be available in February 2025. I like PDFs for...

    Dragon Reflections #87

The time dilation aspect only really shows up between battles when they go home. Everything is different and keeps getting stranger and stranger to the protagonist every time they "go home." It exaggerates the real life disconnect between combat veterans and the civilian world they return to...

I liked issues like this too. Of course I was 25 year old graduate school me at the time... You people are young :D

Worlds of Design: How Subtle is Your Sorcery?

I like my magic to be obvious. Originally my players had a habit of casting some pretty destructive magic anywhere. In the town market, the village square, a church yard etc. Not to speak of indoors. Fireballs in a wooden town. Yep. So, in one of my campaign's occasional "refreshes" (between...

It's Time To Vote For 2025's Most Anticipated TTRPGs!

I had to switch mode to light / white to see / vote... then it was back to black :D For ordinary reading I find the dark mode better, but for this, the opposite.
