D&D 5E What Makes a Good Urban Adventure?

Dungeons are about what you CAN do. Urban environments are about what you're ALLOWED TO do. There's a reason Conan didn't like them much. He punched a judge and had to flee for his life. In an urban environment, you should be navigating opinion, favor, factions and the like rather than making...

D&D 5E Redbrand Cultists! Wave Echo Forge of Fury! Sunless Old Owll Well!

Sounds like a good framework to me! Go for it. :) -The Gneech

The Modern History of the Fantasy Fireball

Is nobody going to mention the fireball the Wicked Witch of the West clearly fires at the group in the Wizard of Oz? -The Gneech

Does Your Group Allow Homebrew or 3PP Material for D&D Games?

In my last game, it was all RAW, using the pregens from the Starter Set, and everybody was fine with it. This wasn't any kind of a formal group decision, it was just how things ended up. In my current game, a couple of the players wanted some pretty out-there stuff (3pp races, mostly), so we...

D&D 5E The Role of Dragons in Your Game

In my game they seem to be great "area denial" monsters. If my players know there's a dragon somewhere, they won't go near it! O.o -TG

    D&D 5E Mearl's Book Design Philosophy

The point of this edition as I understood it was "supports as many playstyles as possible." To that end, I'd say we've reached the point where "the past" is pretty well covered. I'd like to see some innovation, myself. Time for 5E to start making its own history! -The Gneech

    D&D 5E Your Most *Fun* D&D 5e Character

Mechanically my favorite 5E character is very simple, a chaotic good half-elf berserker path barbarian wielding a greatsword taller than she is. Elskandi Hun-Ulfur ("Elsa"), formerly of the People of the Wolf, now wandering hero for hire. What makes her fun is her big grin, her enthusiasm for...

    D&D 5E I need good ideas

Honestly, I'm with these guys. What you're describing is a toxic situation all around guaranteed to just cause drama. Either take the high road, or leave the group entirely. -The Gneech

D&D 5E Has anyone fought and killed a Tarrasque?

I always pronounced it "tuh-RASK." Alas, never used or encountered it in a game. -The Gneech

So I want some advice on how to do what i want.

The advice about 3.x/PF is kind of misleading anyway, because soooooo many of the magic items in there don't do anything but tweak the math. Really almost anything you get until 3rd level in those editions is a thing you already have +1, and not really "magic" at all. So my advice would be...

D&D 5E Optional Combat Rules from the DMG - yay or nay?

What Prakriti said! And with the combat itself moving faster, you can take the time to punch your combat scene a little by thinking up a few bits of interesting terrain or even just some monster/foe personality details to toss in. The fun and interest comes from the richer narrative, rather than...

    D&D 5E Is Storm King's Thunder a flop . . ? Still early yet but doesn't look that good.

I just picked it up and it looks mighty cool, but I won't be able to post a review until I've read it. That said, I'm watching threads like this looking for things to keep an eye on. -The Gneech

D&D 5E Optional Combat Rules from the DMG - yay or nay?

Yeah, I wouldn't mess with flanking. Its meaningful effects are pretty well rolled into sneak attack and/or the Help action already, and for everything else it's just another modifier grinding down play speed. -The Gneech

D&D 5E Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide Neverwinter description mostly useless

The 4E Neverwinter book is quite good and seems consistent with what's been published about Neverwinter in Lost Mine of Phandelver at least. -TG

D&D 5E I think the era of 4th edition Dungeons and Dragons had it right. (not talking about the rules).

Hero Lab works and is fairly complete with the community data set. 5E is simple enough to not really need it, but it can be fun to noodle around with if you want to try different things. -TG

D&D 5E Optional Combat Rules from the DMG - yay or nay?

Not everything in the DMG is intended to be used all at once and some of it is contradictory, so you'd probably want to give things a pass on a case-by-case basis. That said, the "Action Options" on pp 271-272 (Climb Onto a Bigger Creature, Disarm, Mark, Overrun, Shove Aside, and Tumble) are...
