    D&D 3E/3.5 An experiment (3.5)

Interesting approach. I cannot really tell I'm surprised about the importance of initiative, though. "Improved Initiative" seemed always like a good idea to me.

    Character development questions

Sure. But the more I think of it, the less I think it is a good idea to convince a starting player to go on a journey and take 8 class levels he probably does not appreciate to get the good stuff that he does not appreciate because he does not know what dimension door means as an advantage. I...

    Character development questions

That's neat. I don't think I will get the barbarian to scratch 16 skill points for "knowledge (geography)" together, though.

    Character development questions

Cool. So you can dimension door even if you are not on the plane this ability is tied to? Plus, this shows how out of the loop I am. I usually play wizards or rangers, or now a druid, so I never did any THF myself. It's funny that you mention this now. I just remembered that I had that book...

    Character development questions

Well, he decided on a one-handed axe and a shield so far, despite having a Greataxe weapon focus. So, Horizon Walker is better than a standard Barbarian, or is this only due to the further planar career? As far as I guess that this campaign is going, we might have to enter a coterminous plane...

    Character development questions

Thank you very much. I forwarded the link to the player of the sorcerer.

    Character development questions

Thank you for the links. I really don't want this to become a topic about general things like what a good DM should do or not do. As we had two new players, he wanted to get started quickly, so he decided that everyone had to pick one of the 3.5 PHB starting packages. It's no big deal, everyone...

    Character development questions

After years of no games, I more or less accidentally managed to get into a new game of D&D 3.5 as a player. The campaign is supposed to take place in Eberron, we all rolled our stats (mine suck ;)), and as it looks the party consists of a barbarian (very good stats), a sorcerer, and a druid (my...

Borders trouble, could lead to BIG TROUBLE!

Whether it's there or not, that's also Borders. In other news, the decision of Borders' future has been postponed to February 1.

Borders trouble, could lead to BIG TROUBLE!

These messages don't surprise me at all. During most of December, Borders behaved in an obviously desperate way, and I was expecting them to implode every day. I think I used three 50% off coupons during that month, plus some 40% off and 33% off. I even got the Borders Plus membership ($20) for...

    Is Heavy Metal "Rebellious"?

On the other hand, Kiss were pretty mainstream at that time. My parents liked them... I had to resort to punk or some of David Bowie's stuff to get a reaction from them :D.

    Is Heavy Metal "Rebellious"?

Nowadays, heavy metal is more or less a fashion statement among many. I would even put it post-nostalgia (Metallica covered that already a decade ago). If making your father get dreamy eyes by making him think of the days of yore counts as rebellious, go ahead and vote yes. Otherwise, I have to...

What does your ENWorld name mean?

I had already been using "Turjan" on other messageboards before EN World. It's the name of a character in the first fantasy novel I ever read* (Jack Vance's "Dying Earth", 1950), a sword fighting mage who tries to grow people in vats and goes on a quest to perfect this. This was high fantasy as...

    The Pinnacle of your Collection

I came very late to the hobby, so there isn't anything remarkable in my collection from a collector's point of view. So I have to nominate my 3E PHB, still with the unopened CD in the back (I had installed the web version of the program before I noticed the CD :o). It started the journey for me...

Why *Dont* you like Forgotten Realms?

Not my intent. I get a 70's hippy vibe from him, and that's more amusing than anything else.

Why *Dont* you like Forgotten Realms?

Hmm. From all I have heard about Ed (never met him myself), I can understand the "icky" part, in the way that he seems to use very sexually loaded language in communication with his female fans, which might make women feel uncomfortable. I haven't seen anything that reminds me of perversion, though.

Why Do You Like the Forgotten Realms?

For me it's mostly nostalgia. There was a time when the FR were the fantasy setting for me. There was so much to discover. The 3.0 setting book is such a treasure trove for ideas. Even if I don't play in the Realms any more, there's tons of material to plunder.

Best 3.0/3.5 adventures from Small Publishers?

Those two are definitely much better than those I mentioned :). @OP: Can you define a bit more what exactly you are after?

Best 3.0/3.5 adventures from Small Publishers?

I'm not sure what you mean with "small companies". Even someone as prolific as Necromancer Games consisted of two people doing this as a hobby next to their real jobs. Isn't Atlas Games something like John and Michelle Nephew? Not sure how many people were behind MonkeyGod Enterprises, either...

    Favourite Fantasy Settings

I will always have a soft spot for the Forgotten Realms, especially the NW and the Wizards of Thay. It feels a bit like coming home. My favorite commercially available fantasy setting is Glorantha. On one hand, it has some living mythology that feels real. On the other hand, it's completely...
