    Stat and skill increasing items

Haven't found it a problem in our games. Sure stat increase items are 'cost effective' but once your players have identified the next most cost effective item in your collective minds are you going take that out too? The tinkering might also unbalance the game.

    Level 20 commoners?

Granted there are those sorts of challenges. But there must be some that are life threatening. If we are going to subject NPCs to random challenges like PCs lets have a look at table 3-2 of the DMG on page 49. From the table 5% of the challenges are EL 5+. Lets assume that the commoners have a...

    Level 20 commoners?

    1) its less fun than a tough dungeon 2) its would quickly become the prefered method to bypass anything tough 3) there would be hours spend argueing about the rules that governed it 4) there would be an expectation that as it did not involve any physical danger the players would not need to play...

    Level 20 commoners?

Hmm; "NPCs gain experience points the same way that PCs do." pg 107 DMG (hope I did not horribly quote it out of context.) But as an idea that NPCs can gain experience in other ways than PCs I'd buy into that. What still frustrates me than though is if NPCs get it from crafting etc...(non...

    Level 20 commoners?

I don't think thats right; imagine my group on monday nights complaining about the dungeon they are in being a bit too tough...All it would take would be one bright spark to comment that they can earn xp crafting .... Which page of the DMG does it link crafting checks to CR ratings?

    Level 20 commoners?

Nice description! I still have a couple of reservations though; 1) Where do NPCs get xp from to go up levels? I think as stated elsewhere in the thread you only get xp from potentially fatal challenges overcome. If they do gain xp by fighting then that would lead me to conclude that they would...

    Level 20 commoners?

Just a small question why would a person, assuming that they had no choice but to become a first level commoner (by birth, parental training, etc...) take another level in it? Why not pick any other class? If you want combat useless NPCs with high skills why not just hike their skills up...

Would you allow this paladin in your game? (new fiction added 11/11/08)

Maybe it would, I still think that none of my LG deities would choose him to be their chosen one. I'd be interested to hear of any suggestions of why any LG god would choose him though. Most of them when picking one from a series of candidates won't immediately go: "Hey this guy would not be...

Would you allow this paladin in your game? (new fiction added 11/11/08)

There seems to be something in there about the mindframe of Sir Cedric: One moment he calls himself the chosen of his god and in the next he reveals that he thinks his cause is a futile one. I might be projecting a bit here but it sounds to me he doesn't belief he is making a difference at all...

    Good "spirit world" material?

Read the book: Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell; by Susanna Clarke Alernate England during napoleonic times; two wizards working to revive magic. I am three quarters through the book; most their magic seems to be based on fairy magic and there is stuff in there about 'Otherland' or Fairyland and...

Suggestions on playing a 6 Charisma

Had a low charisma dwarf once; Dwarfs these days tend to be solid buggers. Kind of mobile cubes. He was too in a manner of speaking. He arived at the shape not through well honed or sculputered muscles. He was obese to the point that his belly stopped somewhere below his knees, which were...

When the DMs interpretation of alignment differs from the players

Still working out the details with some people I game with but we might be drifting towards an alignment mulitvoting system. Basically if the question of a character's alignment comes up, and the maybe only if the controlling player's and DM disagree, all players and the DM write down their...

If a DM can't cheat, can a player cheat?

Just wanted to say: If a DM fudges its just as bad as when a player does. A players fudging make him more important to the story relative to the rest of those also turning up. When a DM fudges it is impossible to give everyone the same break thus roughly having the same effect. For example...

Guys playing girls (chime in, ladies)

My advise is: flirt like there is no tomorrow. Not just with the NPCs but with the PCs too. Roleplay a bit, put on a deep sexy voice, dress up for the occasion (I'm sure you have all talked about what type of clothing you find sexy on a girl), put your hand on your mate's knee, give it a good...

    The Common Commoner

I don't necessarily disagree with the above; but how do you 'play smart' in a game world where players can not draw links between cause and effect? For if the rules can not withstand scrutiny of logic how can the world make sense? How can a player avoid appearing like a bull in a china shop...

Not sure your deity knows about your plight?

For those clerics who are not sure that someone upstairs knows that you are (again) risking limb and life to safe the world. Specially for those that are paranoid that their prayers are not heard. Let's face it; your deity and/ or their agents hear lots of them everyday. Maybe some of the...

    Shopping for Magic Items

I thought originally that PCs got half market value for their loot because of a question of trust. How does the rest of the world know that the item is what the group says? How do they know its not hot? That said there must be plenty of game worlds out there where PCs have strong ties to large...

    HPs, DR and damage question

How do people describe HP damage done to a critter or PCs? When you have a few levels and a single blow doesn't kill anymore and it could translate more into fatigue than actual physical damage how do you describe things like DR vs fatigue? If the blow never actually landed how does the...

    Elven magic

Well maybe its not just for elves, but it could explain why they can live in harmony with their environment. The idea involves a few spells along the way: Elves eat, they produce waste. The waste is mixed with water and stirred until it resembles mud. An elven mage then comes along casts...

    Speed in combat and magic

Make simpler plans; try being just a firing platform. With a few feats you can cast Magic Missile from a variety of spell slots. Simplify your choices so that all you have to choose between is direct damage on one critter or direct damage on lots. Once you find you are getting bored because...
