    Class Balance - why?

I'm pretty sure they're going to try to put out something that's going to please as wide a variety of D&D fans as possible. Which means not ignoring the desires of 4th fans. And nobody ever said anything about mirroring anything. It won't work if they mirror 3rd edition either. What's the...

    Class Balance - why?

Encounters and Dailies for martial characters aren't REALLY that hard to look at in a way that makes sense. Consider this: I tell my friends I'm going to attack one of them. I run up to one and stomp on his foot. He probably wasn't expecting that so I succeed. Now, if I try to stomp on his foot...

It won't mean anything without home playtesting

Also I would bet that there will be leaks from DDXP, so we'll probably be getting concrete system information one way or another.

One Thing I Think Could Be Improved From ALL Previous Editions...

A stock setting in the rulebook increases playability for new players by making it easier to play straight from the book. Those settings really aren't meant for those of us who have played 5, 10, 20 or more years; we can come up with stuff on our own. Though I admit I did kind of like the 4e...

Has this forum given you the urge to play previous editions?

Actually, yes. I could totally go for a 1e game right now. Since 5e was announced and we've all been discussing mechanics I've dug out my 3.5 and 2e rulebooks (I already had a 1e book out as my originals were long ago thrown out after getting moldy and I just re-acquired a 1e PHB, Unearthed...

    Class Balance - why?

"Not enough people" being in the same boat as me to sustain WotC's corporate bottom line is a LOT different than "not a substantial or important part of the audience." Keep in mind 4e still sold more than Pathfinder over most of the past few years and Pathfinder only pulled ahead when WotC...

    Should point buy be discouraged?

That was a little unnecessarily insulting, don't you think? It's not like I was being argumentative against your position or stating that point buys were the only way to do things, just what has worked best in my group. The player in question isn't a juvenile, just one of his draws to RPGs in...

    Class Balance - why?

I happen to find 4e to be the most fun version of D&D... So let's call it something more like those who like balance and those who like unrestrained diversity. That way we're not accusing each other of badwrongfun.

    Non-Weapon Proficiencies

I really like this idea. I may even use something like it as a house rule in a 4e campaign I'm about to start to cover areas of expertise not covered by the skill system. Good thing I dug out all my old edition rulebooks recently.

    Should point buy be discouraged?

I admit I'm spoiled by using character builders, so someone getting their point buy wrong isn't a problem I've seen.

    Should point buy be discouraged?

Blame the rules because it becomes something that requires oversight, rather than something that can be done by players prior to the session. It solved a problem I've had at my table in a way that left everyone satisfied. So... yes.

    Class Balance - why?

I think this is the crux of the problem in this thread, and it cuts both ways. Whether a table has had problems with the class balance seems to largely come down to playstyle. One table may have players use the Wizard's abilities to their logical conclusion and thus reduced the fun of others...

    Should point buy be discouraged?

I abhor rolling for stats, it takes unnecessary time and requires the DM to oversee the process (I play with at least one player I know for a fact will cheat if not supervised). I also dislike being a character with average or low stats when a lucky rolling friend is running around with no score...

My Wife Has a List of Demands! Part One: Skills

Ugh. I've never understood why people liked spending skill points - 4e skill system in my mind is so brilliant I don't understand why every RPG doesn't do it that way. I hate spending skill points. Hate, hate, hate it. It feels like work to me and easily doubles the amount of time it takes to...

    Class Balance - why?

Why would the Wizard use any of his spell slots for Knock? Utility spells like that are what Scribe Scroll is for. Scroll scribing and item creation allow Wizards to trivialize their spells per day limitations.

"'Kill it before it grows'...he said 'Kill it before it grows'..."

Or, similarly, just as I'm about to meet the Medusa's gaze, I turn away. Just as reasonable. Besides, we're not really talking about turning away the blade, we're talking about getting hit. You get hit with a sword, you are mortally wounded or dying; you meet the medusa's gaze, you are turned to...

D&D 5E No ascending bonuses: A mathematical framework for 5e

It's a very intriguing idea and it could work, and work well. My only problem with it as game design is purely asthetic, in that I like seeing that bonus go up so I "feel" like I'm getting better with my sword - I'm so used to pretty much every game I've every played doing it that way that. I...

    Class Balance - why?

First, no one is saying all characters should be equal in all situations. That's just silly. What we are saying is that they should be able to contribute equally - something the 3.5 Fighter just can't do. Also, it sounds to me like you and the players in your group aren't playing Wizards to...

Pathfinder 1E is a big Pathfinder surge on the way?

Yeah, it is. And I speak as a 4e-player who strenuously dislikes 3.5 for numerous reasons and would rather be clubbed to death with a flounder than play 3.5 or Pathfinder... I've paged through the APG a number of times and was very, very impressed. Not impressed enough to want to play the game...

D&D 5E Martial, Magic or Mundane? What can X do in 5e

So... Wizards get to reality warping gods Cause Magic, but Fighters shouldn't exceed the main character of Burn Notice? That's pretty much asking people to play two completely different games just because of what class they picked. The funny thing is, no one is disputing that there should be...
